Maybe feed when she wakes up, and put back to sleep when she seems tired, even if it is only a short awake time. I also recommend an Ergo type carrier, and that swing naps are okay, if they are better. If the swing works best, make all the naps in the swing. Although it is hard on you, a little crying to sleep might help her nap longer (it does for my LO).

I know it varies by baby, but 10-12 hours sleep is a lot for an 8 week old who should still be napping a lot. I think 10-12 hours is more for an older baby who only has one or two naps. At my four month appointment, the doctor said night sleep should be increasing to 8-10 hours. But it is certainly worth trying an earlier bedtime to see if it works for you.

@daniellemybelle: I would definitely try moving up bedtime...at 8/9 wks my LO was going to bed at 8 I think. If you're concerned about feedings you could either wake her or try to do a dream feed around 10, maybe right before you go to bed.

@daniellemybelle: with easy, we fed her right before bedtime, so no awake time after her nighttime feeding. My LO sometimes slept for a while, sometimes for 30 minutes, so whenever she got up, i fed her. If in the car, a nap happened, I fed her when she woke up. If on a stroller walk, whatever. It helped me to know exactly where she was in her day (and at that age, she was taking more like 5-6 naps!) so it also boosted my supply!

At that age I just have in and let LO nap in the swing. Naps are different than nights. She slept ok in the pnp at night. But I don't feel bad about the "baby containers." Just interacting during feelings and diaper changes and tummy time should suffice at that age especially since they happen so frequently. So my opinion is if the swing works go for it. Non-swing naps at that age were often like ten mins! She didn't consistently take 30-45 min naps in the crib til 4-5 months. And then there were still 10-20 min naps sometimes. Stuck with 30-45 min naps til I think closer to 10 months? She wasn't a great napper. Now at 15 months were at one 1:20-2:00 nap a day. I say in the first few months just try for regular naps and then just do what works!

Oh man four 1.5 hour naps?! In my dreams. This literally NEVER happened for my LO. He took 30-45 minute naps until 5.5 months, no matter where he was at. After trying everything, I just went with it even though it stunk.

Re: feeding, you could try a dream feed! I'd also definitely try an Ergo-style carrier.

@illumina: Interesting! We usually rock & she cries for a while until she falls asleep. On occasion she will fall asleep in her swing & those are the best naps!

@hilsy85: I think we need an earlier bedtime - right now she eats at 9 or 10 so her nighttime sleep ends up being 11-7 or 8 with one or two wakeups. I think nighttime sleep is supposed to be more like 10-12 hours? But I'm afraid she wouldn't eat enough if we cut that last feeding.

@mdf106: We are trying to do EASY - what would that look like?

Maybe try more naps with a shorter awake time. I don't think four 1.5 hour naps is achievable at 8 weeks. Does LO sleep in the carseat and/or stroller? At that age, an outing in the car or stroller was the best way to achieve a long nap.

@daniellemybelle: Hahaha - nothing is ever easy, is t?! Snooze for 10 minutes or more = count toward sleep time. On the boob and awake = awake time. And fwiw, my LO didn't wake up happy most of the time. She still doesn't! (and she's 15 months). You're doing an awesome job mama - it does get better, I promise!

@daniellemybelle: does she have a bedtime yet? If so, maybe try moving it earlier to try to break the cycle of overtiredness. Also, maybe try a different type of carrier if you have a friend you can borrow from or a babywearing group? Maybe she would like a wrap or the ergo?

@daniellemybelle: how are you putting her to sleep? Are you rocking, nursing etc.? I found at that age if I put S down when she was already out she would only sleep for 30 mins ie one sleep cycle. She lengthened naps once she started going down awake.

Those that suggested wearing... She will only tolerate being worn when she is awake and happy, which is a short window of time. She usually fights to get out of the K'tan when she's ready for a nap. I might try again though since it's been a couple weeks.

I know many of you say your LOs would take lots of short naps, but did they wake up happy/rested? She wakes up cranky & still sleepy. I think she just can't make it over the hump to the next sleep cycle, but she wants/needs longer naps. She is a fussy baby, but always in the best mood after a long nap & then getting her belly full.

@Mrs Green Grass: That's a good idea! Maybe I will try just holding her next to her RnP instead of rocking.

@MapleMoose: She has only slept in her crib once! She sleeps in the RnP mostly. We do naps in the swing on occasion (that's what she's doing now!) but she usually needs to be held to fall asleep.

@MsLipGloss: You are contradicting yourself! :) If she snoozes on the boob (not sucking) for 10 minutes, does that still not count toward total time?

I don't know that this is an issue, but also, the time that she is feeding is considered awake time . . . so she may be awake more than what you think. (if so, she could be overtired and thus not sleeping well . . . but I think it's just that 45 minute sleep cycle and not being able to transition to a deeper sleep.)

yeah, LO did that also--waking up early from naps and being super cranky, and needing to go back down in less than an hour. i felt like a prisoner. i couldn't start anything, like cooking or exercising because i knew he was going to wake up right when i was in the middle of something.

i think you're probably reading her sleepy cues correctly when you first put her down. i think it's just a lot of babies have problems soothing themselves back to sleep after the 45- minute sleep cycle is over. although it does not hurt to try at least a couple of times to keep her up a little longer to see if that makes a difference.

My little guy (now 16 weeks) started taking 30 minute naps around that age, and he still does. For a while, he'd nap for longer if I was holding him - so I often did. But after a while, he would still only nap for 30 minutes in my arms - so I gave up on holding him. I can sometimes rock him back to sleep, but only if he wakes up crying and falls asleep within 5 minutes of me rocking him -- otherwise it's not happening, and I figure it's not worth my effort. He now takes four 30 minute naps a day. Sometimes he'll throw in a 2-2.5 hour nap just to keep me on my toes, though. I'm anxiously awaiting nap consolidation. :)

Now, they sleep 1 1/2-2 hours usually, but they're 9 months old. :) I sometimes would let the boys fuss (not all out cry) for a few minutes to see if they would settle back down or pat their backs for a minute, but honestly, at that age they mostly just had to take a lot of short naps.

DD fights daytime sleep as well. She just wants to be held and if I have her in the carrier she sleeps great. She had a rough week at 8 weeks and I attribute it to a development spurt. Now she's 9 weeks and I'm finally starting to be able to put her in the swing drowsy and she'll nap for 20-40 minutes. I keep trying the crib for daytime naps but her startle reflex is so strong she wakes herself up after a few minutes (if not during the transfer) and refuses to fall asleep in the crib if I put her down drowsy. She has hated being swaddled arms in since day 1 so that's not an option. I agree with you, 8 weeks is too young to CIO. Does your LO like the swing or RnP, something that will make her feel more snuggled than a wide open crib?

Sounds like she just wants to be close to her mama. Imo, 8 weeks is way too young for CIO. My LO rarely, if ever, took a 1.5 hour nap . . . she averaged 30-45 minutes. Naps as short as 10 minutes *count* toward total sleep time. And that's what I would focus on, total sleep time.

I have a major sleep fighter, but she also is really cranky if she doesn't get good rest throughout the day. We do EASY & shoot for four 1.5 hour naps per day. Sometimes she will sleep the whole time, and others she will wake up after 30 minutes or so, but she is still tired. I usually end up holding her & rocking her while she takes the rest of her nap because she will cry if I put her back down, but it's not convenient for me! I have tried letting her go back to sleep on her own but she never does. She's 8 weeks so it seems too little to just CIO, but I don't know what else to do.

As I'm writing this I am realizing this usually happens at the same time every day. Should I try keeping her up - maybe she doesn't need the full nap? She acts so cranky, I'm sure she's tired!
