@buttermilk: They are nice to have, lol! DD was once every few days which was awesome, except for the fact that when she did poop it was usually a blowout.
It also meant she usually pooped at daycare so I rarely had to change a poopy diaper when she was little!
Glad he's doing good!!

Update! We went for his weight check today and he had gained 7.5 ounces since Tuesday!!! Only 2 Oz shy of his birth weight now. I’m so ecstatic! Spent the first day and a half super bummed and stressed out but rallied after that. I’ve been nursing every 2 hrs, pumping a few times a day whenever it doesn’t completely stress me out, and giving him about 4 Oz formula per day while m supply ramps up. The doctor was so happy and said I should be able to drop the formula completely by a month old. I’m so happy.

He still hasnt pooped again for 3 days. Has about 12 wet diapers today. Idk what that’s about! Ped felt around and said his sphincter does feel tight. Usually resolves itself, I just gotta get this guy to poop!

Well 45 min after the 2 Oz of formula he had a big greenish diarrhea poop. Lol. At least that’s out of his system! Maybe this will all work out. Maybe he just needs a little supplement to get him over the hump and get his tongue tie fixed.

@buttermilk: I think it was nearly painless for my son (there are very few nerve endings there), and made a *huge* difference. I know many doctors are skeptical that tongue ties even exist (our physician would not refer so we went out of network to a pediatric dentist), but I think this comes from being not that familiar with breastfeeding. For me, there was no comparison between how breastfeeding felt before and after. And I went from having clogged ducts daily to almost never. Still breastfeeding at 10 months, which would not have been possible without fixing the tongue tie.

@periwinklebee: that’s great to hear! I’ve had a few different docs/nurses bring it up now but they all have different opinions about how much of an issue it is and whether or not we should do something about it. I’m glad we’re moving forward with it tho. Seems like it will only help.

Well I went in for another weight check and he hasn’t gained anything in 3 days. :crying:

Lactation consultant is referring us to a doctor for short frenulum and has given me a pumping and supplementing plan to follow. I just gave him his first 2 Oz of formula. Going to try to protect breastfeeding as much as I can while we are headed down this path. I was preparing myself for needing to supplement again with this LO but damn this is so hard and has my mama heart feeling very sad.

@MamaBear87: We took LO in for this when he was a couple of weeks old, as he'd gone several days without pooping. Pediatrician said she's seen it be all over the map even with very young babies and it can be perfectly normal to go 5 - 10 days, so she wasn't concerned given that he had plenty of wet diapers and was passing gas fine. We subsequently learned that LO only pooped in the bathtub, lol. This lasted until he was about 10 weeks old. He was never a frequent pooper until we started solids.

Hey there! This happened to me and my DD  She was also EBF. What ended up being the cause is that she likely got a touch dehydrated the day before my milk came in, so it took a minute (aka 5 days) for her poop to catch up. Nothing dangerous, nothing even uncomfortable for her, wet diapers a plenty.

Doctor ended up suggesting lightly pressing a q-tip covered in vaseline on her bum to help encourage a poo (like, barely inserting). We did that on day 5 because we were freaking out about the lack of poop, and I swear she must have lost a pound after that BM. We were hot-swapping out diapers to contain it.

My DS was a poop almost-every-diaper baby, my DD was a once a day or every other day (sometimes 2 or 3). So my two were completely different! (And it was so nice to not have MOTN diaper changes with DD!)

Hopefully your baby is just like my DD, but definitely talk to your ped about it, 5 days does seem like a long time for a newborn.

Hey lady! So happy for you on the arrival of your sweet baby.

So my understanding is that BF babies going longer between poops doesn't really start until they are a bit older - when they are newborns, they should still be pooping frequently (multiple times a day). I would be a little concerned that he has not pooped since the meconium poop. I know now, J poops like 1x a week and M would go almost 2 weeks when he was a baby, but that's like 4-5 months old.

I would call the ped and ask to come in for a weight check today to be on the safe side, not wait until next week, although it's definitely reassuring if he's having lots of wet diapers.

Hi, my brand new baby boy is 9 days old. He hasn’t pooped since last Thursday which was 5 days ago and it was still the meconium transitional poop. He is EBF, has at least 6 wet diapers per day, seems to be happy and content and isn’t showing any signs of being in pain or constipated. At his weight check 3 days ago the pediatrician wasn’t worried yet. We don’t go back until next Monday but he seems to be on track for growth so far.

I seem to read all different things about newborn poop. Mostly that anything goes. I read that breastmilk is the perfect food and there isn’t waste and so they may not poop much, but then I also read they should be pooping with every diaper. I recall my daughter also been an infrequent pooper but she was slow to gain weight and the docs had me supplementing right away.

What has been your experience? Would you be worried? I just wish the kid would poop already!
