@lamariniere: @travelgirl1: @Mrs.Someone: @junebugsmama: Thanks for the insights! I should probably just modify my expectations and simply hope for no ear infection... She's been a great flyer so far, except for the ears on our last flight

@MrsClownfish: I like the idea of this, but worried it might not support her 17 lbs?

@MrsClownfish: I thought this looked really cool when my LO was little and we were going on a trip, but I did some research and I read that these are pretty strongly recommended against by flight attendants. They are definitely not FAA approved and some flight attendants might make you not use it. Also, they hook to the tray table in front of you which is pretty flimsy so if the person in front leans their chair back, the baby might get hit on the head.

@travelgirl1: This is basically what I have done at that age. Arms, ergo, boobs.

I found that the bassinets weren't that big or convenient. My son just barely fit in it at 7 months, and he wouldn't sleep in it at all.

We flew to Spain when LO was nine months, I just wore her in the Ergo and stuck a boob in her mouth and she was great.

@MrsClownfish: I've seen those in theory but have never seen one on a plane. Seems like it would really jostle the person whose seat back it was attached to.

We lucked out and were given an extra seat on almost all flights. Ask as soon as you get to the gate! For sleeping, nursing is probably the only thing that would work right now (8mo)

I just got back from my first flight with my 4 mo old! Granted he's much younger than your baby but he's a big baby--20 lbs! I find our tula (similar to ergo) so uncomfortable to sit in but the ring sling worked great! I can tighten it and stand up/bounce around or loosen it a bit so his bum is on my lap but still supported cozy like a blanket. And my hands can be free. It was a life saver my whole trip, he took every nap in it. I just wish someone else could have worn him once in a while, I can't figure out how to get it on someone else properly.

@Rockies11: @littlejoy: You're giving me hope! I'm always the one who wears her when we travel, but I'm tempted to pawn her off on hubby while she sleeps... Pretty sure he could sleep through anything

@PinkElephant: I can't believe you managed all that while pregnant! That makes this seem a whole lot easier...

I thought about the extra seat thing, but I do worry about her rolling off... I even found myself trying to devise something in my head to pen her in! I think that's a little crazy though...

When our LO was that age, we lucked out and had an extra seat. We had to bring her car seat on the trip, and they let us bring it on the plane for free. It was amazing. On the way back, the flights were sold out, so we did the Ergo. It wasn't horrible, but I definitely liked the car seat better (she actually slept most of the way). Ergo works ... just plan on passing baby back and forth a few times. The aisles are great for soothing/walking/bouncing.

PS - I did this once with a 17 month old as a lap child, 17 weeks pregnant, in economy, by myself, on a 15 hr flight. It seems daunting but you'll be fine. At the end of the day it's only a finite stretch of time, then you're done! :)

We flew to London with our 9 month old, and there were extra seats for her to sleep on. We also had Ergo to put her in otherwise. It went really well both ways.

Honestly the bassinet is not always that helpful since you have to remove the baby and hold it when the fasten seatbelt sign is on, which happened a lot on all the long haul international flights we took. So you aren't missing much! :)

We had good luck with the Ergo - I think just setting a mobile baby in a boppy would make me nervous due to turbulence and fear of the baby creeping out while I slept.

@looch: @PurplePeony: Thanks for the tips! She will be a lap child - we're hoping to avoid the extra expense and not planning on lugging her carseat due to all the public transport where we're going. It didn't even occur to me that a 9 hour flight would not have bassinets... sigh

We did a long flight when our LO was 8 months, and we bought a seat for her so she could sleep in her car seat. I don't know what we'd have done otherwise -- I guess a carrier and lots of walking the aisles (it's really hard to sit in those seats wearing the baby in a carrier). Good luck!

So, one thing yo can do is buy a seat and bring your car seat on board. Or, if your baby is a lap child, you can bring on board a boppy type pillow and use that to try to get her horizontal. I'd get seats that are not in the bulkhead so the arm rests can be raised, you might get lucky and have an empty seat in your row.

I was on a flight once where they offered us some kind of contraption that we could put on the floor of the plane and put the baby in, but we declined.

My husband and I are traveling to Europe in a few weeks with our LO, who will be 9 months at the time. Our US to Europe flight is overnight, but we found out the plane we're flying does not have bassinets. Our girl is sleeping pretty consistently 12 hours in her crib (6:30p-6:30a) - any suggestions on how to get her AND us some sleep on the plane? We have 2 Ergos (Ventus and a 360) and strapping her to us is my only guess so far... Thanks for any suggestions!

Edit: She will be a lap child and we're not bringing her car seat (taking public transit to several different places in Europe), though it's possible we may luck out with a free seat near us...
