I do mostly BLW and I've had good success keeping the mess down by feeding her food bits myself, or giving her one or two pieces at a time so she focuses on eating them rather than throwing things around.

Out and about I've fed melon, scrambled egg, tofu, rice, blueberries. Think cheerios, puffs, peas, or carrots are a great idea. I just made some "cookies" by baking mashed banana, baby oatmeal, and a bit of baking soda. Those would be easy to transport and crumble up for a limited mess, on the go snack.

@Foodnerd81: my daughter is very helpful now and when she finished her pouch the other day she went and threw it in the garbage. I had to remember to go get it later.

@meadow: haha yes, I meant to post the link that @Mrs. Goose: did! Made it so much easier togive pouches to my first daughter. Just be aware it's super easy to throw them out when you are cleaning up quickly 😓

I fed in the double stroller and just managed the mess later. But we mostly were at parks and the zoo and outside places.

@meadow: pouches may change your life! My daughter wouldn't let me feed her and is just a now letting me do it while holding her at 16 months...

The choomee sip n spout off amazon changed my pouch experience for the better so much. It made pouches basically mess free and she couldn't squeeze them out anymore.

@meadow: I got these for my older one, pouch resistant, daughter. Minimized how much she could squirt out! Luckily my younger one never needed them, maybe bc she watched big sis still eating pouches.

@meadow: Got it. The mess factor was the main reason I did not bother with BLW. You have more patience than me!

Looks like I need to teach these kids how to eat a pouch!!! Haha

@Foodnerd81: true....they are pretty good about eating carrots!

@ElbieKay: we did BLW so they aren't used to spoon feeding at all! A couple weekends ago I got some pureed prunes because their poopinion was uncomfortably hard.......it was like a circus trying to spoon feed them!!! Hahaha

Thanks again.....cheeros...pouches.....Carrots......we'll pull together a meal!

At that age, if I needed to contain mess I just fed him instead of letting him feed himself. There were plenty of opportunities to practice self-feeding at home.

ETA: I never really brought food for him to restaurants. We just fed him off our plates and sometimes chose to order strategically to make sure there would be some good options for him to eat (as opposed to just ordering what we would have gotten without the baby).

When we are out an need to keep it neat we stick to eat, sweepable foods- mostly Cheerios and apple sauce pouches. This helps minimize the potential mess.

I take all in one meal pouches like a chicken veggie quinoa meal and then give my 9 month old puffs and melts and neat/easy to clean up foods like thawed frozen peas and carrots. If it's a restaurant I feed my 9 month old his pouch right away when we sit down so he's not hungry and then give him a few pieces of finger food at a time while we are eating. I also give him bites of my meal. Then I pick up the puffs and Cheerios at the end or leave a big tip.

With my first I really struggled to figure out finger foods that were healthy and non messy. With my second, she got a ton of pouches when we were out. She did a pretty good job with them and not squirting them everywhere like her big sister did!

Depending where you are, you could bring a blanket or towel to put on the ground to make clean up easier (like a relative who has a rug under their table).

Some less messy options for my kids are toast with avocado smashed on it or a thin spread of hummus or peanut butter (messy on her face but less on the ground), cut up hamburgers or turkey burgers, steamed carrot sticks... but really lots of pouches.

ETA: but I only had one baby at a time- obviously you have twice the mess!!

@Pollywog: The floor is a good idea....puffs & cheerios for sure....Bananas- good idea. We haven't done strawberries or ground meat yet. Was going to make them some ground beef this week. And cheese would be awesome....but mspi - whomp whomp.

Thanks for these great suggestions!

I would feed him on the floor and only have non-messy foods like bananas, ground meat, puffs, peas, strawberries, and bread. I'd also give a pouch. Cheese or a yogurt pouch would work if you don't have allergies.

This sounds silly but.......what do you do about feeding babies out of the house? We have the Fisher price booster seats so that in theory we could feed the babies when we visit family, etc. But my twins are....uh......kind of messy!!! Besides being messy themselves they typically thrown some of their meal on the ground. I am 100% comfortable doing this at my parents when we visit but have avoided feeding them out other places. However I think we are at the point where they NEED to eat three meals.

What do you do/did you do when out and feeding finger foods?
