@jennlin821: thanks, yeah he will nap in the car pretty well. I get my coffee and he and older brother sleep so that's been a decent option. If he naps more than an hour in the morning, we do a car nap, but if a super short nap in the am, I do try to get him in the crib. I don't think it's his tummy, he's quite tough GI-wise and other times will sleep just great, and long. I could try music?
@jhd: winter has started with a vengeance so we won't be out too much but I'm not opposed to stroller naps. He sleeps well in the car. (My poor older son goes to outdoor preschool- it's snowy/ rainy right now and 33 deg!! You couldn't pay me to be outside lol. But he loves it.)

We are re-training CIO at night. It's not as disastrous as it used to be, but he's been waking in that 9-12 window again. Ugh. I just don't know what I'm doing and I feel like I'm traumatizing him.

@pachamama: this sounds so rough. Would he do a stroller nap? At least that way you could get a little fresh air and maybe your older LO can get some energy out?

Will he nap on you? Perhaps the afternoon nap could be in a baby carrier?

My other thought is that you are feeding him right before nap... could his tummy be bothering him?

I reaching a bit now. If you need him to take an afternoon nap, then you do whatever it takes. Car ride for a nap is totally acceptable for everyone's health and sanity.

What is your nap routine? Our routine was/is exactly the same for night sleep as for naps. And DD's room has blackout curtains, so it is pitch black for naps.

One other thing that did work for us was music. Our baby monitor had music that would play lullaby for 10 minutes - on rough sleep periods, this would help. Could you put a speaker of some kind in his room and play music? (FYI - don't use Pandora, my DD would just be asleep and a loud commercial would come on and disturb the nice lullaby  )

@PurplePumps: sounds EXACTLY like my guy down to the car rides. I think this is just one of those things that will pass, like everything with babies. And I'm sure once he goes to daycare it will be better. I just I hate hearing him cry after we did CIO 😩 but I really, really, really need a break some days. My almost 4 year old is so exhausting and difficult.

How long has he been doing this? My son has always been an awful napper (i napped with him, rocked to sleep, anything to get him to sleep), until we did CIO for night sleep and naps kinda followed at 7 months. Then for a few weeks, I think around 10 or 11 months he decided one day he wanted to fight his afternoon nap like no other. He'd scream for 30+m, sometimes skip it only to fall asleep in the car later within 2 minutes... it was AWFUL. I dreaded it everyday, I thought I was going to go nuts, then suddenly outta the blue as suddenly as it started, he stopped and just went to sleep with minimal complaining.

@pachamama: you’re definitely not a shitty mom but dang, I so know that feeling. I do find car naps (even if all I do is drive a route back to the house) can be helpful to my mental state. If I know sleep is needed but it’s not happening, I strap everyone in, put on a podcast that requires little thought, maybe grab a cold drink, and take an easy drive that usually works for lulling to sleep. Even if I am dead tired, I often find it helps to just get that head space.

@JJ2626: yeah we might shift earlier. It gets dark around 445 here now 😆 he's going to daycare in Jan and will have to nap earlier so hopefully I that will work out. I just hate having him cry.. @bhbee: yeah it's silly to have him cry for 30 mins then nap for 30. I should just drive around, the almost 4 y/o and I always find something to do. It was just a hard day and I'm such a shitty mom sometimes, I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm so tired of feeling like I'm fucking up my kids. Thanks for always, always helping me.

@pachamama: ughhh so sorry. I really have no answer. What happens if you push the morning nap later? Could you get a longer nap then or not? For my second two I have often just had to hope for one crib nap, one whenever car nap and early bedtime. It’s rough if you’re home in that there’s not much break but you get more flexibility to leave the house. No idea if that would make sense for you

I’m sorry, some kids are just tough on sleep.

Ugh I’m sorry! Have you tried an earlier bedtime? Like 6-6:30? It might shift everything so he’s on a better schedule. Or could it be something else? Is it super dark in there, do you have white noise, is he too hot?

@bhbee: Ive been noticing a few signs of tiredness, so I put him down pretty soon after and he still has been crying . I shortened the wake window, made things worse . Every single afternoon nap still crying at least 30-45 minutes. It's really wearing on me. He's also been waking at night, just once tho. We haven't been consistent with CIO bc honestly how much can one baby cry in a day?

@pachamama: I’m so sorry. I napped trained two of mine in different ways and it just sucked. Guess you could try even earlier like 8:30. Does he show any signs of tiredness at any point in the day? Like even one little eye rub. That was how I did my third - I couldn’t use a set schedule but if she showed even one little sign I popped her in the crib and set the timer for 20m and let her cry until it went off. If she was still crying at 20m I would make a gut call on whether to try again later or do another 20m after calming her a bit with patting and singing.

I don’t know, some kids just hate napping but I found in my son that it continued to get worse as he got older so I wish I had addressed it sooner.

@bhbee: Yeah I was thinking moving naps earlier was a good idea. Today he woke at 6:40 so I put him down at 9, just 15 or 20 mins earlier than normal, and he has been wailing for 30 minutes. I don't understand why he won't just nap like a normal baby. I can hear him with earplugs across the house.

What about moving up both naps? Just throwing it out there. My now 14 month old couldn’t stay up 3 hours before her first nap for a long time. She was often ready 1.5 hours after wakeup at that age. Then I could get about 3-3.5 hours to the next nap and then she stayed up about 4 hours to bedtime. 2-3-4 intervals is one way I’ve heard it before. Example of how we actually did it -

6:30 wakeup
8:00-8:45 nap (wake her up for preschool drop)
12:30-2ish nap
6:30 bedtime

We’ve always had to flex it due to carting the other two around, but I’ve found naps much easier for her if she goes down on the early side. Maybe worth trying, every kid is different. We did CIO naps for my son around 13m and it eventually worked - I always left him in an hour. I think it took more than a week of consistency to get it done.

@pachamama: yeah, so it’s really only the time between naps that seem too long which is honestly why I think you’re having such a tough time with 2nd nap.

Because of their age, I’ve only ever done crib60 with my kiddos and while they never cried through the whole thing I was told that if they did, do quiet play for 30 mins and try again. If they still don’t go down do a rescue nap and get them to nap however you can and try again next nap. So, you’d probably want to do something like that but maybe longer then the 30 mins before trying again. Or you could just start with crib60 and see if he naturally lengthens his naps once he catches on there. Also, I think the crib hours are only fair if you’re following appropriate wake times.

Honestly, my 4 year old slept no longer then an hour in his crib until he went to daycare at 14 months so I was super sceptical this would work but I had to do something with these babies because... twins. Just today my twin A woke up 40 mins into his nap, woke up twin B and they both put themselves back to sleep within 10 minutes with no crying and slept another hour. So, it did work for us but I had to be super consistent and give it time but it has to be what you’re comfortable with. I also look at the whole day of sleep so if they do a long first nap I accept shorter second and third naps from my guys.

@MrsSK: So he's
Wake- 6:45
Nap 1 - 930- 10:30 (give or take a half hour 🙄)
Nap 2- 3:15 - 4 (at most)
Sleep 7:15 (doesn't seem overtired)

I guess I should put him down around 2? What if he cries for like 1.5 hours tho?
I've heard of this crib90 thing, I could try it but he is very very stubborn about wanting out of his crib as soon as he's up from a nap. 😖

What’s your full schedule? I personally wouldn’t go back to three naps at that age unless you think he’s overtired and needs to catch up on sleep or can’t extend naps long enough to make it to bedtime in which case I’d add a short catnap. It sounds like he is overtired due to the amount of time between nap 1 & 2 which is probably why you’re having trouble with nap 2.

I think at that age, your schedule should be 3/3/3 for age appropriate wake times or at least working towards that. So for example,

Wake up- 6:30
Nap 1- 9:30-11am
Nap 2-2-3:30pm
Bedtime- 6:30

You can flex your schedule for really good and crap nap days.

If you’re comfortable with it, in order to get him to extend naps, I’d try crib90 (on 2 naps) which is basically leave him in his crib for 90 minutes from the time he falls asleep regardless of whether or not he sleeps the entire time. The idea is that as long as he’s fed, dry and sleep conditions are appropriate he basically needs to learn that this is sleep time. This might take a bit but as long as you’re super consistent he should catch on. Also, make sure he is going in the crib wide awake.

Anyway, I’m not an expert by any means but I’m home with my 6.5 month old twins for 18 months so I’ve been reading a lot about baby sleep as this is a major stressor for me:). I also follow these sleep charts and find them really helpful http://www.mybabysleepguide.com/2013/02/average-sleep-charts-by-age.html?fbclid=IwAR2dWopMBRA2mI_-Y0bORgqi5hAuG5lFmyiS1vBfMZaEt0iYbHEi5tnzPnc

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions! Baby sleep sucks so much.

Yeah, I thought about him going back to 3 naps..., but it wouldn't that be weird to do as we dropped it like 2 months ago? I have a 3.5 y/o and was in such terrible mommy jail w the three naps a day 😭 I guess he could be overtired but he certainly doesn't seem it, he's happy as can be. Ughhhhh

Have you tried increasing his naps?
My DD took 3 naps a day until 18 mo, because she only napped 45 min at a time.
Here scheduled looked something like this:

7am - wake up, eat breakfast, Play
9am- breastfeed/bottle
9:15am - nap
10am - awake/diaper/snack/play
12pm-breastfeed/bottle
12:15-nap
1pm- awake/diaper/lunch/play
3pm- breastfeed/bottle
3:15-nap
4pm - awake/diaper/play
530 - dinner
6:30 - start bedtime routine
6:45 - breastfeed/bottle
7pm - Asleep (all night)

This was only on the weekends, daycare she usually only took two naps because there was so much going on, but would fall asleep in the car. Most weekdays I would have to put her to bed early (6-6:30 instead of 7)

I wonder if he is fighting the afternoon nap because he is so overtired?

I swear to god this baby's sleep has been so difficult.

9 month old generally sleep great at night, 11 hours straight (we CIO at 6 months). Always sleeps in his crib. Does great for his morning nap at 9:30am, for 30 - 60 mins. He has never ever gone down before 2pm so I have found 3:00 is the sweet spot for his afternoon nap, which is never more than 45 minutes. this seems way too late but shortening the wake window has always backfired. He wails every single time, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes 30. If we are driving in the afternoon, he will fall asleep super easily. He's not hungry- I either give him food or a bottle right before. His naps are too short.
Is this normal? How can I get him to sleep in his crib in the afternoon? It's excruciating to essential CIO every single goddamn afternoon.
