When I fed cereals J was constipated too - until i introduced prunes (pears didnt help). I would give one spoon cereal, one spoon prunes, back and forth. Good luck!

@littlebittyhouse: I'm going to try toast spread with fruit puree. I have never tried that before.

@pregnantbee: I mix pureed pears and peaches into her oatmeal but she is still constipated. Maybe I need to make it 80% pear and 20% oatmeal or something.

@plantains: i think chunky purees are just hard for some kids because it isn't a puree but it is not finger food either?almost like if they don't know if they should chew or just swallow...

When we started purees/BLW I give him everything cut into finger size sticks. Toast, waffles, pancakes, banana etc. Most of it will end up crushed in their hand but some will make it into the mouth! Working on the larger stickes helped him to work on his pincher.

@plantains: You could try mixing pureed apples or pears with the oatmeal -- for my LO, the apples/pears counteract the...ahem...effects of the oatmeal :) I also wonder when my child will be eating pancakes and all the other things that the other 9-month-olds look like they're eating. I was all about wanting to do BLW before he turned 6 months, and then I realized that it just doesn't work since I work out of the house fulltime. Even though daycare says they're cool with doing that with him, I think they're still more comfortable giving him purees. When I make my own and accidentally on purpose leave larger chunks in there, I get the container back with the larger chunks left behind. I also like knowing he's actually eating the purees and not just playing with them. This makes me also hope that I don't have to keep pumping forever :)

Keep me posted on what happens. I'm going to be asking his ped this week about whether any foods (aside from honey and cow's milk) are still off limits. I'm scared to even give him cooked eggs or anything baked with milk as an ingredient.

@Freckles: I haven't tried cutting food into sticks yet, maybe that is the way to go?

@mediagirl: I will try this for breakfast tomorrow, thanks!

@mrsjazz: I think I just have to let her play with a bunch of food while feeding her puree and if she eats any of the finger food good. If not, oh well.

I'm sure she'll be done with purees by the time she goes to college.

@plantains: I just started scrambled eggs recently. I'm sure she would have gagged on them at 6 months, too. Chop them up really fine and put some on the tray for her to play with and some on a spoon to feed her with. She'll get the pincer grasp eventually. M's still perfecting hers!!

@plantains: Maybe you can just start offering it and letting her play around with the food. We did a combo of purees and babyled weaning, so she's been picking up food for a while now--at first at 6 months she could only pick up big pieces, like we'd give her big apple slices and she'd suck on those. In the beginning I'd put the food on her highchair tray and let her touch and feel and then feed her myself when she couldn't pick up some of the pieces. Now she moves my hand away!

@plantains: i started at 6 months. I started with kamut puffs which she looooved. It takes time, because in the beginning she would just stuff her fist into her mouth. I think it was around 8-9 months that her pincher grasp was really developed. How about peas? They are soft and a good size. Really ripe pears cut into sticks are good too. I found that cutting food into sticks rather than cubes were the best.

What i did was put the puffs on the tray, and then i would pick them up and put them into my mouth, making "mmmm yummy" sounds. Then i would put one in her mouth. After a couple of snack time sessions she figured out what to do.

My nephew had a lot of trouble with any chunkyish food which turned out to be caused by massively inflamed tonsils. Little guy is eighteen months old and just had them removed so helpfully he'll be able to start on table foods soon.

@mediagirl: I tried scrambled eggs when she was 6 months old and she gagged, but I could revisit it and see. Are scrabling them with breastmilk, cows milk or just solo? The waffle bits never occured to me, i'll give it a try.

@littlebittyhouse: she mostly gags on chunkier food. She can't pick up finger foods at all yet, but sometimes I can give her soft bits of carrots and mashed peas and she does better. Mostly if we are out somewhere and she has little bits of apple or pear she does fine, but sit her in the high chair and she doesn't even try to pick up the food.

@mrsjazz: I was washing beef smell out of my hair all day. I haven't eaten it since either. Ugh.

@Freckles: I have pretty much backed off giving her meats at all. I am worried about being like your friend, I know she needs to practice. I don't want her to be 15 months and only eating smooth purees.

Maybe she isn't hungry enough when I offer her the finger foods to try to explore.

@Freckles: Yes. I used to stop her from stuffing her mouth but now I just let her be because she needs to learn. And I agree--my LO does better with food when she can pick it up and feed herself vs. me feeding her chunky textured food.

I find the meats are harder for babies (it 's that chewy consistency that makes it hard) and she only recently at 11 months started eating meats without gagging. How about if you offer her table foods? I found that at 9 months she did a lot better with finger foods than if i am feeding her chunky foods. It's almost like touching something tells her brain she needs to mash the food with her gums before swallowing.

I have a friend whose 15 month old still gags on chunky foods. But they are so afraid of gagging that they don't offer different textures/consistencies, which i don't think will help.

@plantains: Oh my god, the first time LO gagged and then projectile vomited all over herself and me, I was so scared (and grossed out).

She's 11 months and still gags sometimes, she really likes to cram food in her mouth, so even though the pieces I give her are small, she'll shove 3 in her mouth and then gag. It's nervewracking!

my 8mo old is a gagger. it is better than it used to be but still...

it seems that it happens more when he puts too much in his mouth and he seems to do better if i give him some water during meal times.

Have you tried scrambled eggs cut up really small yet? They seem to slide down really easily and she has never had a problem with those. Mashed avocado is good for breakfast, too. Mashed banana? Oh, how about fingernail sized bits of waffle with puree slathered on it? Megan loves that. :)

At 7 months, I re-introduced the baby oatmeal and she absolutely love sit but it constipates her like crazy so I need another solution. Her favourite puree in the world is avocado and banana.

@plantains: my lo gags on the smallest pieces of avocado or ground beef or pasta or anything somewhat dry. I feel your pain. All I see are photos of my friends with babies my daughter's age or a little older eating normal sized food. I freak out thinking something is wrong with M. And now my pediatrician says we need to start weaning from purees. HOW do we do that if she keeps gagging?

I don't know about you but gagging freaks me out. I know coughing is good but it's still scary.

I know I shoukdn't worry because I still nurse her, but I have to leave her for a week in April, and I would rest easier if I knew she was doing better with solids so DH could feed her easily.

At 10 months, she still gags sometimes. She does well woth things that melt easily, but sometimes gags on things like mashed/chunked banana or steamed carrots. She only has 2 teetg, which I think is part of it. But, I am not too worried about it . I will continue nursing and giving her purees, while adding more chunks as we go:)

We did BLW and purees. He is 22 months old and he is still gagging on food. This happens for a number of reasons. I found that every time his gag reflux moved back and his tongue thrust shallowed, he started gagging again. He would work the food around and learn how to handle it better.

@pregnantbee: @banana: Okay, I'm glad to know that other people are dealing with this. She will eat yoghurt melts with no problem, it is just when I try to give her chunky or think things, especially if the texture isn't smooth.

I guess I just worry because it seems like other babies her age are eating 3 course dinners. My girl would be happy with nothing but boob forever:)

@plantains: We've barely given our 9-mo-old anything chunky. Only purées and rice puffs that kind of melt. Your LO is prob getting used to it? More practice? No idea.
