We had a nap regression around 9 months and pushed through it but after it was over, we ended up with a much shorter morning nap. We just kept cutting back the morning nap until he was sleeping a decent stretch for the afternoon. He's at 1 hour in the morning and 90 minutes in the afternoon. We've been there since about 11 months DS just turned 1.

I need to have him asleep for his second nap within 2.75 hours. Have you tried putting him down earlier? Like around 12:30? Maybe you can try pushing out the first nap?

For me, iF I put him down too late, it will take a long time for him to fall asleep and he will have a short nap. If I put him down too early, he just won't go to sleep.

ETA:
This is how my nap strategy goes:

If he wakes up happy and babbling, then I aim to have him down/asleep within 2.75 hours for his first nap. This morning he woke up at 6:50am and i had him asleep for his first nap at 9:40am. He slept for 50 minutes. Not great, but he did wake up later than usual this morning.

If he has a 30 minute nap, i aim to have him asleep for his next nap within 2 hours of waking up.

If his naps are fine, then i need him asleep within 2.75/3 hours. I find that if i take him upstairs at the 3 hour mark then i'm doomed for a 30 minute nap.

I find that a 10 minute nap (if he is done his second nap at 1:30-2pm) is enough to get him to bedtime.

@winniebee: She had woken up by like 1:30-2 before and I had put her to bed that early, at 5:30-6, and it just never really worked out. She didn't wake up for hours MOTN, didn't wakeup at 4am for the day, but it just wasn't good sleep, plus then I feel like she missed her last meal (milk+solids).

No help here b/c some days we're in the exact same boat. One nap will be short, then our whole day is screwy. We pretty much always give a third nap and just wake her up (my least fav part).

do you think if you let him cry it out he'd go back to sleep?

R is 9 months and is on two naps MOST days. He's on a bit of a modified 2-3-4 schedule. But some days his afternoon nap is only 30 minutes, which leads to the need for a third nap. Any insight?

Here's his day today:

Wake up 5:50 (went to bed at 6:50 and woke to eat once at 3:45)
Nap 1: 8-9:45
Nap 2: 1-1:30

He was yawning by 12 and against my better judgment we pushed on until 1. Do you think he needs a shorter awake time in between first and second nap? Today he will need a 4 pm cat nap or else he won't be able to get to 6:30/7 bed time.
