@agold: Hugs mama bedtime is hard. Last night I had put DS1 to bed and was working on baby. He was screaming, I was crying and DS1 came in my room and seeing this made him cry. How old are your two?

@ALV91711: I'm so sorry. My husband works nights no 3, 4 or more nights a week. I'm having a tough time, too, to be honest. I am still trying to figure out the best way to get both kids down at night when I'm by myself. One or both or all three (me being the third) is always crying during bed time routine. Can we form a support group for ourselves? I'm on the couch with wine right now, trying to make a grocery list.

Another vote for reflux (given the discomfort, stuffiness, etc). Both my kids had reflux and were so much better after getting on zantac.

@Foodnerd81: Mostly it has been in the morning & evening. The last couple days it was most of the day. I'm really wanting to try and get him to bed earlier before he falls apart but it is hard with dinner and getting DS1 ready and into bed. My DH isn't always home from work for dinner/bed which can make it hard. DS1 is 5.5 so he can at least do a lot for himself but he's still been getting way too much screen time.

@ALV91711: also do you have an exercise / yoga ball? I used to bounce my cranky baby on that for hours and hours, mostly holding her or sometimes with her in the wrap of my arms were falling off. Unfortunately my older kid watched a LOT of Daniel tiger around this time.

@ALV91711: is it only or mostly in the evening that this happens? I think most kids have a witching hour around that time! Totally awful and totally normal. With both kids I worried I wasn’t making enough milk, too much milk, anything. It just sucks.

@Foodnerd81: Getting outside would be worth a shot until it starts snowing this weekend. I'm going to try the wrap and a walk tomorrow night for trick or treating as that is around when he gets grumpy.

Today he did better but then the screaming started after dinner. He was acting hungry but freaking out. Got him to take a soother and that calmed him down and now he is sleepily nursing.

@ALV91711: I’m sorry. I feel like there could be a million different reasons for it, but probably just a phase. It sounds kind of like my first, but I guess I was “lucky” that my first was the one who was so needy since I could devote all my attention to her. It’s SO much harder with two.

With my first, putting her in the moby wrap and walking outside was key to settling her down. Would you be able to take your older one for a walk while wearing the baby? She loved being worn but not inside unless she was sound asleep.

If it continues, I feel like probiotics really helped my younger daughter when she was having little tummy issues (I also had an oversupply at first and had a hard time getting a foremilk/ hindmilk balance). My pediatrician recommended trying probiotics and they seemed helpful. But if it just started it could definitely also be a phase that will pass.

Hugs mama. It’s so hard and it will get better.

@Mrsbells: I have a money wrap that I love. Sometimes he likes it other times not so much. It definitely has helped when things need to get done.

@agold: some days are just so hard to balance the needs of both. And DH has been working lots which makes it harder. I definitely agree that good maps make night sleep better. It can be a vicious circle. DS1 pretty much had to be held to nap but with only one that is more manageable.

Knock on wood after a rough start to the morning we are now on nap 2!

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. It sounds like you have another older kid, also. I have a newer second baby and an older, but still young, first baby. It's so hard to focus directly on the new baby, but I put new baby's sleep at the top of my list as much as I can. Babywear during the day if you need to. I was/am not good at babywearing, but I got a "happy" baby carrier and its so dang easy to use. Totally worth the purchase. Good sleep during the day helps good sleep at night. But even still.. my new baby is having a sleep problem at night - she doesn't like me to put her down! But she's a baby and its a phase and I'm praying it will pass quickly! I hope things get sorted out for your little guy, too, for both your sakes!

@ALV91711: I switched to a different IBCLC who also happened to be a nurse. She noticed that he coughed occasionally, which newborns shouldn’t do, and is a sign of reflux. My son actually slept well but stopped eating and gaining at around 6w. He screamed when I nursed him past 5 minutes.

@muffinsmuffins: I've been teaching DS more card games since we can do that on the couch while I'm nursing or baby sleeps on me. We have 2 month shots on Thursday so I'm going to talk to the nurse and see what she thinks and see if she thinks he needs to be checked out. He hadn't been doing this last week when we were at his 2 month paediatrician appointment.

@ALV91711: yes our older DS was such a chill sleepy baby that I feel like a first time mom with no clue! DS1 did have reflux so we are watching this babe for that too...I actually don’t remember what prompted us to check DS1 but he was on Zantac for a while. As for taking care of your older, we just tried to baby wear and stay involved with him, iPad unfortunately, and going to the opposite end of the house at night if he was screaming with white noise cranked in our older sons room so he couldn’t hear it.

I would say if the screaming doesn’t ebb and flow a bit more over the next few days, I would take him in to check everything. Maybe the congestion is affecting ears even without a fever?

Thank you everyone!

@CatchAFallingStar: I don't mind letting him nap on me and early in the morning he usually sleeps on me but I don't know if I could do all night.

@2littlepumpkins: He is stuffed up, so that doesn't help.

@JJ2626: I think so, he is swallowing a lot and has gained 5lbs. When I have pumped I usually get about 4oz in the amount of time he nurses or less time.

@Mrs.Someone: How did you determine it was reflux? I brought up to the ped last week that he spits up quite frequently but he said that because he's gaining so much he's not concerned.

@Lindsay05: He loves a tight swaddle. I don't have a swing but was thinking about getting one this week. I think I will do it today after we drop big brother off at school.

@Maysprout: Last night one time when he woke up he passed a lot of gas and then seemed happier.

@Ajsmommy: The only other thing is he is stuffed up.

@snowjewelz: Thanks! I hope this is just a short phase.

The hard part is trying to also take care of DS1 while this guy screams. There had been lots of things the last couple days.

Hello fellow September mama  Sorry you are going through this hell. I posted something similar a week or so ago after having 2 very tough weeks with DS2 who will soon be 8 weeks. We are maaaaybe on the other side of this, until the next leap/growth spurt whatever of course, but sounds similar. Lots of crying, can’t be calmed, sleep is crap, etc. Etc. I was prepared to cosleep and take him to the doctor but then it evened out just as suddenly. In the past week he’s gone 5-6 hr stretches 3 or 4 times. Day sleep is still crap but oh well. I wore him in the evenings and basically just tried our best with bouncing, feeding, swaddling, white noise, etc. All that to say is I would just ride it out and keep an eye on it because it could change very quickly again...hopefully for the better.

I promise it will get better soon! 9 weeks is super young and there's SO MUCH happening; growth spurts, developments, etc. It is kind of hart to pinpoint without knowing more but I can see how reflux, or changing up how they're going to sleep, tweaking schedule etc can all play a part. Hang in there mama! It WILL get better!!

As much as it sucks, I would give it a week or so before worrying that it could be reflux. My son had reflux but it was not a sudden thing, but more of a constant since he was really little.

Agree with others that it could be onset of a cold causing discomfort. Or maybe a development leap...

Have you tried swaddling nice and tight? I would swaddle, them nurse until fully asleep then transition to the swing with loud white noise. Also a warm bath helped calm baby down when she was to worked up to even latch. Hang in there, it gets better even when it seems like it lasts forever.

It sounds like reflux to me. My son would stop eating after 5 minutes and just scream because it hurt. We put him on omeprezole and it helped immensely. If you ever feel like he isn’t emptying the breast, but you don’t think he’s going to nurse again in the next half hour or so, pump to keep your supply up. For us, I didn’t know what was going on and it went on for long enough to damage my supply.

Assuming it came on suddenly I agree with wait it out and it’s rough!!

In the mean time anything that works at all goes in my book ... napping or sleeping together, babywearing, trying a pumped bottle, getting ahead of tiredness as mentioned above ... hopefully just a phase that goes quickly. My 11 week old screamed a couple hours today (no idea why today was bad) so I feel for you!

Are you sure you’re producing enough milk? When I was nursing, my LO would always fall asleep while nursing but not for long because it turned out she wasn’t getting enough. My other suggestion is to put him down (or try rocking to sleep or whatever works for him( after 45 mins awake no matter what. My LO also screamed when tired and I had to be really committed to putting her to sleep even when she seemed awake. But also, as said above, it will pass!!!

I would guess he's either teething or going through some kind of milestone. I'm not the cosleeping type, I'd just wait it out. I know that's not super helpful at the moment. If he just started being super unhappy (like not just the usual not so great sleeping stuff) in the past couple days at nine weeks and there's no early teeth coming through I would think, since it's fall, maybe a cold/illness coming on. It will pass, good luck.
