@hilsy85: That progression would likely be from the 2 year WHO recommendation... since we're planning on bfing longer ours will probably stay at 75/25 or 60/40 for alot longer. I think the point is that it's a "slow" progression though based on bm needing to be the primary source until 1 y/o.

@hilsy85: i reckon that a lot of the "mainstream" info and advice on solids is based on weaning LO at age one whereas the Kellymom / "crunchy" advice is geared at longer term breastfeeding or self-weaning.

FWIW my girl doesn't nurse before her solids because she's just not interested at that time and it's not the routine she's put herself on! These days we nurse at 0700, 0800, breakfast at 0830, nurse to sleep at 1030, lunch at 1300, nurse at 1500, maybe nurse again at 1700, dinner at 1800, nurse to sleep at 1900ish.

@hilsy85: it does sound like you're doing everything right then :)

I struggled in the beginning with breast feeding and I think some of that sticks with you. There's always a worry about not getting enough and it can be agonizing. If you feel like its ok, then trust that instinct and don't get wrapped up in the worry. You will always know your baby better than anyone else, regardless of their knowledge or medical background

@junebugmama: Right, I do always nurse in his room with the door closed, so it's not distracting at all for him (I think). I do give him water...I guess I could cut back, but I honestly don't think he drinks too too much (maybe 2-3oz over the day? It's not like we're refilling his cup constantly). We actually do mainly finger foods now that he feeds himself...toward the end of the meal I can tell when he's had enough and I might put some pieces in his mouth but he's pretty clear about when he's done (screams and waves his arms, lol).

So based on t hat kelly mom article I am doing it right (offering solids about an hour and a half after I nurse). That recommendation always confuses me though, as I said above...if I did plan to wean at 12 months, LO is supposed to go from 25% of caloric intake from food to 100% of caloric intake from food? or is WCM supposed to replace BM?

It seems like I'm doing everything I'm "supposed" to, so maybe I just need to chill out, lol. I guess all I can do is keep offering throughout the day and if he says no, then he says no!

@hilsy85: The best way is to make sure there aren't any distractions. Obviously, at this point you can't "force" a 10 month old to do anything. So you just have to give it your best shot.

Before and after naps is a great time, and even though 3-5 minutes is such a short time, he may be emptying the breast that fast at this point. Are you giving him water with his meals? One of the best ways to figure out if he's getting enough breast milk is to cut back on the water for a day and see if he's still producing enough wet diapers.

Are you spoon feeding him? If so, letting him feed himself will trigger hi, full reflex, in case he's over eating by way of the spoon, and therefore not wanting to "work" for the bm

3 meals isn't too many, it just shouldn't replace breast milk at this point. Here's a link to some great information about solids and bm http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/solids-how/

@junebugmama: do you have any tips on getting him to nurse before meals then? When I offer and he doesn't want, he just pushes me away and gets annoyed. That's why I started nursing before naps about two months ago, he's less likely to get distracted/push me away when he's tired. I also offer when he wakes up from naps (which is usually a 3 min session), and then he usually eats solids about an hour later.

Also, the 3 meals a day was suggested by our pedi...and he does seem to like his solids at this point! How do I know how much BM he's getting/if I need to supplement?

@hilsy85: yeah, she's fine. I went from ~30 oz. to ~26ish oz. I think she drinks ~25 oz. a day.. I have a stash so I'm not worried.. It just caught me a little off guard that my body started to produce less without any direct triggers.. Kind of sad..

@hilsy85: He should also nurse before meals. 3 meals a day at this age is a lot and he should be getting most of his nutrition from breast milk until at least a year old.

He needs 24oz of breast milk per day until 1 year. If he isn't getting that, supplementation may become necessary as weaning now, is too early.

@hilsy85: Yep! That is one of the advantages, I think. But also disadvantage.. I'm curious if he's decreasing intake at all over a 24 hour period. I know you've posted about weight worries before, but I'd just trust your little guy and his tummy!

ETA: I agree though, it's SO weird to think of not being his main nutrition source for me. Like.. in 6 months from now.. I could potentially just be gone all day? Without pumping? Or seeing him? So. weird.

@runsyellowlites: I do try to nurse before meals but he's generally not interested :( also while I hope to bf til maybe18 mos I do plan on partially weaning to maybe 2-3 sessions so that Kelly mom recommendation always confused me! I also do worry that he's not getting enough nutrition from breast milk but I don't know how to get him to nurse more! Do you find that you were able to increase supply if necessary as p got older or was it more difficult?

@LaineysMom: Do you feel like your LO is ok with the lowered amount? Or areyousupplementing?

@Mrs Green Grass: Omg seriously--I can fit into some of my old bras again (from early in my pregnancy)!

@scg00387: @purrpletulips: Eek I hope we don't add another night waking...he has been alternating with sttn (!) or waking once, really don't want to go back to two! It sounds like for you guys distraction is a major issue? So they're making up for calories at night?

I have no advice, but I was a little freaked out when I pumped this past weekend and got like 4 oz instead of 8 or 9. I'm guessing it's just the natural order of things as solids ramp up - unfortunately for us it's almost meant at least one extra night waking (from 1 as normal) which I've been going along with.

P still wasn't eating solids at that point but I realized a huge drop in what I could pump around that time, and she was snacking more often & nursing less "full" sessions (she was just busy). For the pump I had been able to easily get 5 oz during a night session & around then when I started prepping for our anniversary trip at 1 year I could hardly get 2oz! I think there's a normal "re-regulation" that happens nearing the end of the first year.

At almost 16 months we still nurse alot & her solids intake is still a little less than 50% (kellymom showed a recommended progression of 25% at 12 mths, 50% at 18, and so on). Since he still *needs* bm as his primary source of nutrition I would continue to nurse before any meals so that the majority of his fuel is coming from that instead of the other way around. ;)

DS is 10.5m and I'm right there with you. His nursing sessions are faster and he is distracted by everything and anything around us. At 10m my pumping output dropped by 3oz a day. I just adjusted his daycare bottles to be less which he is making up for by waking up an extra time at night.

@hilsy85: At his 1year Dr. appt. his ped suggested we just try to switch him to whole milk cold turkey and see how it goes. Well, he took to it like a duck to water and I suddenly didn't know what to do with myself. We still nursed before bed, but he dropped that session by himself a few weeks ago. I had a sinus cold this weekend and DH had to remind me that I could take meds. I totally get it, it's such a strange feeling to not have to worry about milk after it was forefront in my brain for so long.

I think aroung 10mo mo I went from being able to pump about 15 ounces in a work day down to about 12. I agree with the pp about milk intake slowing down as solids become more prominent.

It could also be distraction when it comes to the short nursing sessions. Months 9-12 I had to nurse in a dark room or he would be so interested in everything else going on.

This just seems like the natural progression towards solids being his main food source. He would let you know if he wasn't satisfied, or fuss at the breast if he wasn't getting anything.

@MamaMoose: that makes sense...I guess it's just hard to tell if he's satisfied these days--he has these bouts of fussiness that I assume are related to teething/boredom/early tantrums, but in the back of my head I always wonder if he's hungry/I'm starving him (except then I try to nurse and he refuses...and I don't know if it's a bad habit to get into to offer snack type food at times like that?).

I would guess your little dude is just starting to back off on the milk in take as he eats more solids. As long as he seems satisfied I really wouldn't worry about it. With you being home with him all the time and able to let him nurse whenever he wants your supply will adjust to his needs.

LO is 9.5 months and up til now I've never really been concerned about my supply. However, the last week or so, my breasts have felt softer than usual, even earlier in the day. And during my pre bed pump session, I've had a tough time getting more than 1oz, when normally I might get 2-2.5.

LO is nursing 6-7x a day still, with two of those being before naps, when he nurses to sleep and doesn't seem to be getting that much because he falls asleep so quickly. I would say out of those 6-7 sessions, only 3-4 of them seem like 'good" ones. Not to say he isn't getting anything the others, but they're usually pretty short. Is that enough for him? I have no idea how many oz total he's actually taking in...

how do you judge your supply with an older infant? I feel like the # of wet/dirty diapers is thrown off by solids intake (he eats 3 meals a day and the last few days has seemed like he really needs/wants them). Any advice? Should I start taking supplements just in case?

Sorry this is so rambling! Any advice welcome :)
