I am a foster parent and CPS explicitly told us a Pack and Play is fine 👍

Honestly, the idea of CPS taking a kid away over sleeping in a pack and play is ridiculous! Basically unless you beat, molest or give your kids illegal drugs you are probably ok (at least here - I have seen some seriously ridiculous situations CPS allowed kids back into in my area)

We have a Guava travel crib that will be baby's sleeping surface when she grows out of the co-sleeper. I don't think it's a big deal. It's clean and simple.

i wouldn't blink at having your baby sleep in a P n P personally at ALL. however, we are foster parents and i know that in our province foster babies and children are not allowed to sleep in P n P's for safety reasons. we use a mini crib or full size crib for our foster babies. hb

thats a really weird comment. CPS has better things to do, and wouldn't give a shit about a pack and play.

I hate comments like that because they fuel this false belief that CPS is some boogyman out to take children away from safe families. They don't even have even foster homes for the children that have been removed from unsafe homes.

Sheesh. Heck no. A PNP is fine. I'm sorry someone felt the need to give you completely baseless information. CPS is not going to come to your house and freak out over something like that. We were between houses for a few months and my son slept in a PNP with an extra mattress for at least 4 months.

Yeah, your friend is way off-base. There are actually lots of government-sanctioned programs to PROVIDE Pack-n-Plays to families in need of a safe sleep space, so I'm pretty sure CPS would not have a problem. We have a crib but my daughter slept in a Pack-n-Play by my bed for her first year. Please don't worry about her reaction.

DD slept in a p&p in our room till she was a year because we felt it was safer than moving her to her crib in a room with her 3 year old brother. (in case he decided to crawl in and sleep with her / accidentally smother her).

I know of state sponsored programs that give pack n plays to families if the parents indicate at the hospital that they do not have a safe sleep space for the newborn. CPS would not find your pack n play objectionable!

I think this is a very strange reaction. Perhaps she panicked in the moment and blurted something out, or had a strange experience with CPS, i'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt because you stated she was a new 'friend'.

My DD slept in a packnplay until 14 mo, and that only because we were gifted $ for a crib. Packnplays are by definition a travel crib, and she still sleeps on it 1mo when we visit grandparents.

So while a very strange conversation, I'm going to label this one 'bad baby advice' just like all the other strange comments you get when pregnant and parenting!

Literally watched CPS take away my client's kid (it's a long story, everything wound up being fine) and as she was arranging for the child to do kinship care with a friend, the CPS worker asked whether the friend had a place for the baby to sleep and the friend said she had a pack n play and CPS said it was okay. A lot of people use pack n plays instead of cribs, particularly in lower-income or transient communities since they are cheaper and more portable. Frankly, I think this woman is a snob.

That is a freakin ridiculous and uncalled for comment. The state of NJ is giving out baby boxes now for safe sleep. Pack n plays are totally fine. My infant son has been sleeping in one for three months now since we are living abroad.

Um, totally weird, and the CPS in my state wouldn't be upset.

PnP is our plan for this baby for most sleep since I'm not buying a new crib, and our crib is currently unusable.

@Hypatia: what I do know for sure is that most manufacturers warn against switching out the mattress they provided with something thicker. I have heard of people using it for full time sleep just like the rock and play but I dont think its designed for that

Hell, Finland gives out baby boxes of supplies and intends for the baby to sleep in the box; they have a very low infant mortality rate. I think the fact that she has a safe place to sleep is good enough.

So, I was talking with a new acquaintance (not sure how else to put it), and she asked if our crib is in the same room as our older DD or in our room. I explained that I have a joint disease that makes carrying my 15 month old up and down stairs difficult, so for the safety of the baby, we have her sleep on the first floor in a pack and play.

She was pretty shocked by this. I reassured her that we have a thicker mattress than what comes standard (I think it's four inches thick) and that we have a baby monitor. But she was really concerned that it was a PnP and not a proper crib.

"You better be careful with that. If for any reason CPS came to your door, they'd freak out."

Does anyone know if that's true? Is it really that big of a deal? If anything, I'd think they'd be safer because there aren't any bars to get limbs caught between.

We don't have a crib because the one we had broke while we were trying to disassemble it for our move. We intended on buying another, but then we realized that the PnP has a lot of advantages, such as it being lightweight, I'm able to move it around the house easily with the wheels, etc. What do you think? Should we be concerned about this?
