@Crystal: The bottom of our bedroom door presses down against the floor enough that I don't believe the bat would have been able to get through.

My landlady went up last night and tried to get him to no avail. She left a window open and hung a curtain on the doorway. I just went back to check and he's not roosting anywhere obvious. The main concern now is that he didn't leave but is hiding somewhere, under a table, in the closets, under a pile of clothes, etc. We're watching my husband's youngest brother now, but when my MIL gets home I'm going to see if she can watch the baby while my husband go and turn over every nook and cranny to make sure the bat isn't still there, then seal off possible entry ways to make sure no others find their way in.

I don't how long, if ever, it will take me to feel at ease in my apartment now :S

Sorry the current one terrorized you! I would freak out too! They're cute in pictures, not swooping in your face.

If they can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime, then couldn't they have gone under your bedroom door and bit any of you while sleeping?

I would freak the eff out if this happened to me. I hope you are able to get rid of the colony soon.

Well, I wasn't able to get in touch with the landlady in time. She may go up tonight to look for it, if not I told her to wait until tomorrow and I'd come help catch it. For tonight the three of us are staying at my mother in laws (luckily she only lives a couple blocks away! :P). I really hope there's not a colony, either, but all signs are pointing to it :S

@Sparkler: I really hope the pediatrician doesn't think it necessary. I didn't think it necessary to keep the first bat - he was wearing clothes, showed no indication of being bit (they're not enough to wake you, but the bites still would hurt a conscious person so I would think he would cry) and the bat wasn't even on him for a full second. Hm.

@MsLipGloss: Sorry, I am being confusing! Yes, the bat did land on LO, but I'm 99% positive there wasn't a bite and it wasn't on bare skin. I, myself, wasn't in contact with the bat's mouth or claws.

@LuLu Mom: Yes, I probably will be mentioning this to the pediatrician to be on the safe side, but I don't believe there's much they can do other than put him through the entire treatment. ETA: Since I didn't send the first bat for testing. If the second bat come back positive for rabies it may change thngs considering that the likelihood of rabies in the first bat would be more likely. When I spoke to the wildlife rehaber she didn't believe there was any reason to worry about the first bat.

@bluestriped bee: I'm absolutely traumatized! haha. I love bats. They're extremely important for the environment and really cool animals. But I'm so paranoid about them touching LO and as I'm walking out side my building today I see birds and my heart stops until I'm like "It's a BIRD."

I'm not usually overly nervous around them - just cautious, respecting their space. But the face that this one chased me like the little girl from the Ring around my living room makes me sooo scared to try and capture it again :S

A couple months ago my landlady was on vacation and I was taking care of her apartment where a bat had gotten itself stuck in a bucket. Here's a photo of the little guy after I took him into the center (he was dehydrated but pretty good otherwise!)

@MsLipGloss: There wasn't opportunity for the bat to have contact with any of us while sleeping and LO would not have been left unattended in order to have contact with said bat. Because there were no chances for contact and I didn't believe the bat to be exhibiting rabid behavior I didn't feel like having the bat killed was necessary. With this 2nd bat it's behavior is out of the ordinary and it was in the house when we woke up this morning. Our bedroom door was closed and it was found in the hallway, but bat's can squeeze through a hole the size of a dime, so I cannot say for certain either way - better safe than sorry. Especially now that there is a strong likelihood of there being a colony in the building - where there's one rabid bat, there's likely more.

LO had no idea what was even going on. It seems disoriented and sort of just fell on him (he was wearing a onsie) and I didn't even think a second thought and grabbed it bare handed and thrown it. Instincts! haha. I cringe thinking about picking one up bare handed, that's super dangerous!

I'm worried about the possibility of rabies, though. Now that I think of it, the first bat was *too* easy to catch. I was able to knock off the bottles it was sitting behind, throw a towels on it and throw it in a box with no reaction. I choked it up to it being a little after dusk, so it just having woken, but now that I think about it *that* could also have been rabid-behavior.

@MamaMoose: @snowjewelz: Yes, if you wake up to a bat in your room or find a bat in the room with your LO you should keep it confined and send it for testing. Their bites are painless and don't leave a mark. Because these bats came through the living room window (or the door to attic which is also located in the living room) and LO co-sleeps with us and isn't left by himself we didn't think it necessary to keep the first one. The 2nd's behavior is troubling, though so we'll be sending him off to make sure.

My landlady was in the process of contacting someone to look into colony removal & relocation - a much more extensive process than just taking out one or two bats. If there are pups, though, you cannot relocate until they're able to be up and flying, so not until the end of August. The chance of rabies, however, would probably change those plans. I'm anxious to talk to her regarding what the plans will be.

Yikes! I'd definitely take the bat somewhere for testing. My boss recently had a bat in her house that her dog somehow got ahold of, and she had to get it away from the dog. She brought the bat in for testing and they told her that it probably wasn't rabid but they'd test it to be safe, and lo and behold, it WAS rabid. They told her that if there's ever a bat in the house and you aren't able to capture it for testing, they recommend people get the shots because their bites are so tiny you may not even realize you were bitten.

Super scary. I hope you can capture it and it turns out not to be rabid!
