Honestly I wouldn't even be offended, I'd just laugh out loud...! haha! And who cares! I'd just tell her, yes I am so poor! Who cares what she thinks.</p> <p>It's funny because when I was still pregnant I swear I will breastfeed because I also thought it was the "cheaper route" (and of course all the health benefits for mom and baby), but boy that's so wrong! </p> <p>The pump is expensive, and then there are the pump parts, and extra pump parts. Soooo many bottles I've bought, all those storage bags. Then we have to buy outfits that are breastfeeding friendly. Nursing bras, Boppy pillows, breast pads, breastfeeding cover. Then there are lactation consultant appointments, and all these extra food /drinks we consumed @ 500 calories a day to make the milk (For me I drink papaya juice religiously and those are not cheap). On top of that, some of us (like me) have to see a shrink because of the pressure that I may not be making enough milk, and how the baby is completely relying on me for his well-being. Not to mention we have to get a break from work every 2.5-3 hours to pump for 15-20 minutes. Thankfully my friends and most of the people in my community support breastfeeding so I haven't had to deal with negative comments like that. But I do get occassional remarks from other moms who weren't able to breastfeed. They will say things like "You breastfed? That sucks cause you'll get saggy boobs". Or "Oh you BF? Well I'm glad I didn't cause mastitis sounds horrible!" There are less likely to be BF resources like lactation consultants and La Leche groups in poor areas. I have no idea if this is true, but I wonder if lower-income moms might have to return to work sooner and are less likely to be in a work environment that supports pumping. I have a friend who works retail and it's just hard to take breaks, find a place to pump, etc. Even though the law requires time and a place to pump for moms, I don't think all employers adhere to that law.</p> <p>Also, this story is so horrifying!
