@Mrs Green Grass: I watched the John Oliver piece and it would be perfect for my students! They love obscenities lol! So that's no issue.

@keepcalmcarrie: I also found this and may teach it with the article you suggested:

@Mrs Green Grass: I know! My students are college freshmen and they still have a hard time with Orwell. But honestly, my students are not all that different from HS students....actually they are probably behind them since they've had the summer (or more time) off.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: for media studies you have to do something on Native Advertising. John Oliver just did a great segment on it but he's not quite appropriate enough for the classroom.

I'll try to think of more essays in particular. On Shooting and elephant is tough even for my seniors...

@Mrs. Sketchbook: I'd choose her essay 'Total Effect and the Eighth Grade,' if you're looking for an English-related essay.

@Mrs Green Grass: that looks perfect for our media studies unit. I was doing a doc called "Consuming Kids," but this one looks better, actually!

@honeybear: Excellent picks! I did Shooting an Elephant a few years back and my student then didn't get into it, but maybe this year I can do a little more work to warm it up for them. We will do O'Connor in our fiction unit at the end of the semester!

What about something from Orwell or O'Connor? They've both got plenty of (short, readable, and really well-written) essays to choose from. Orwell even has an essay about shooting an elephant!

@Mrs Green Grass: my textbook this year is wretched!

We are doing an observational unit to start off and so far the one that got the best response was a portion of Half the Sky plus watching part of the documentary. I mean, the dudes were literally crying in class.

I also assigned a Men's Health expose about the elephant trade that got good responses, but I mean...what is there to argue about? It is sad when elephants are slaughtered! So something more controversial is definitely good.

I will check NYT Room for Debate out! My students have a zero attention span so short blog post is really ideal for beginning of the semester :)

Maybe something about SeaWorld/Blackfish?

My kind of post! I started with the whole Miley Cyrus VMA debacle last year. I was thinking of doing something with the ice bucket challenge or with Ferguson, but I haven't done any research yet. I really like using NYTImes Room for Debate section. You should check it out!

I am sprucing up my syllabus for this year. My textbook is....not fantastic. I'd love to start the semester with something current and interesting, etc.

My pick would be this: http://www.vulture.com/2014/05/read-amy-schumers-ms-gala-speech.html

But I'm a little worried that it wouldn't be appropriate for the first week of school, first semester freshman english. This is a commuter school so I'm likely to have some older students, or high school students. Still, I'd love something fresh and interesting and short to share with them.

But nothing is coming to me at the moment!
