@Anagram: Awww, well then, I'd go witht the breakfast birthday idea.

If it makes you feel any better, my son would have been totally disappointed. I feel your pain with that kind of stuff.

@Anagram: I'm totally with you! And they should've known at the beginning of the month that they were doing the Father's Day celebration this Friday!!! You should've been told WAY before now that there was a conflict, so that sucks. :bummed:

@Adira: I just feel parent-stupid because I'm the one that built this darn thing up so much. We aren't having another party for her this year, so I've been playing up this little daycare celebration and counting the stupid days off the calendar. We are usually NOT into holidays and celebrations at all, and this is why, haha. Also, I'm on my period, so I think I am irrationally upset that they didn't call or email me yesterday so I could have brought all the stuff today!

I feel for you because the school definitely should have looked at the calendar and realized! And my son is a little younger but I know he understands timing and looks forward to things. That said, at this point I would just do it in two weeks because I think it'll be nicer for your daughter and I'm hoping she'll get excited about the Father's Day thing, especially if her Dad can make it.

@Anagram: Sorry, I didn't mean to upset or offend you. I totally get how disappointing it is for BOTH of you. It sounds like you've done a lot of prep work for this party and you were both looking forward to it, so I totally understand that it's disappointing! If you find another solution that works, definitely do that!!! I'm just sharing what I would do, which might be completely different than what you decide to do, and neither is better or more right, in my opinion. Plus, you know your daughter best. My son probably takes after his dad and doesn't get super emotionally invested in stuff like this. Yes he'd be excited and looking forward to it, but I know having it not happen and having to push it back wouldn't devastate him. And that's just his personality. Your daughter is probably MORE emotionally invested and probably would be more devastated than my son, so choosing a different option makes more sense to you!

Hope you figure out something that works for everyone!!! <3

@Anagram: I think @Mediagirl's idea of muffins and strawberry yogurt might work. I usually find that when my DD has requests they're not as specific as I think. So, if she asked for pink cupcakes I could probably do muffins + strawberries + strawberry yogurt and she would be happy as a clam.

GOod luck and let us know what happens!

@Adira: yup. Agree to disagree. I'm definitely feeling emotional about this myself today, so I'm probably reading a lot into it, but I feel like that comment is a little sanctimonious. My LO has a baby sister and has lessons in patience and disappointment, several times a day. She needs me? Well, the baby also needs me, so she has to wait. She wants a snack? Well, I'm changing a diaper. She wants to play? Well, I'm making dinner.

So yeah, I'm not going to pick a special event she's been counting down to on her calendar to teach her a lesson about patience and disappointment. She gets plenty of that already, and to me it's not developmentally appropriate for her age to do it for a birthday if there are other solutions I can make work.

@ShootingStar: yeah, I never thought that having a conflict would come up, so we've been Xing that day off LOs calendar, counting down till Friday. I think that's why I really care now--she's literally been talking about it daily, we're doing the countdown, etc. Last year, she would have not known the concept of dates/time at all and I could have switched dates no problem.

@regberadaisy: yeah, I think I may scope out some breakfast ideas and call daycare and see if that will work. I won't be able to make it at that hour (it's our last day of school, which is why I picked this Friday originally, so I could be there at 3 since we have early dismissal), but I guess it's better than LO not getting to do it Friday.

with that said - do you think you could ask her what she wants to do?

I'd try to figure out how to minimize her disappointment - will she be less disappointed with a breakfast celebration tomorrow (and btw, who cares if for once they have cupcakes in the morning, it's the teacher's fault anyways :silly: ) or will she be less disappointed having to wait, but really getting a day to herself? DS is 2.5 and he doesn't really understand days of the week or what "friday" is, so I could totally push him off on something like this. But I understand if you can't do that with her.

@Anagram: @T.H.O.U.: agree. 2 weeks is a lifetime for a 3 yo. When she's been looking forward to it all week it's a little unfair to her that it can't happen because the teachers forgot. If it were my daycare teachers, I know they would feel horrible they forgot and make it work somehow.

@looch: he's not going. He works in the city and LO goes to daycare out near my work in northern NJ. We're a 1 car family so the logistics of DH leaving at like 1 pm to make it up here by 3 is too much--we always just skip those events. It's usually not a problem because I pick LO up at 3, so we leave before the events get started and she doesn't realize she's missing it.

Take this as an opportunity to teach your daughter about disappointment and patience. It sucks that she was really looking forward to this and it's not going to happen the way either of you thought, but it's a good time to try to teach her that sometimes these things happen - sometimes things don't go our way and we have to make accommodations.

I think it would be too much to ask the teachers to try to squeeze her birthday in on Friday along with what they have to do to prepare for the Father's Day event. Just put off her school birthday for two weeks.
