@TurtleDoves: I like Mrs. Bee said, and another thing to think about is if you're pumping long enough for a 2nd let down when you do pump? That always made the difference for me. Also, you said that you used to pump more than you needed when you were EP. Do you think that because your baby is now nursing, that your body is regulating how much you actually need?

@TurtleDoves: So as MrsBee said a baby will always be a lot more efficient than any pump, however at around the 2 month mark, your body starts to regulate your milk production. Pumping the 4 times and yielding what you were isn't something that is actually maintainable. The average woman needs to pump 6 to 8 times per day in order to achieve the output that you were. It's great that you're getting baby back to the breast, because since you're having this issue now, you more than likely would have had an issue long term ep'ing. Plus going for long stretches results in things like mastitis.

Most LC's would suggest that you don't pump anymore than 30 minutes. So I would suggest pumping more often and for 20 minutes instead of the 40. Emptying your breast more often will help to increase your output again.

If you only feed on one side, pump the other side while feeding. You will get a lot more milk. This is the only way I stashed when working. I never got as much pumping as he was eating in any one pumping session. But in the morning with a full side and him eating the other, I would get 5 or so ounces. Then if he wanted to nurse more he still got a ton of hindmilk on the other side. Then you will get a little more. Did you pump both sides or just the one when you exclusively pumped? That could be why. I also had one side that produced less than the other by about an ounce.

@babyjmama: that's my game plan for tonight & tomorrow...pump after each BF & see if I can add it all up to make up for the lacking
@junebugmama: omgosh, good for you!
LO is 6.5w
How many times did you pump before? 4x a day yielded 24-28 oz so that's all I did

Are you feeding at the same times you were pumping? No but that is because he is on no type of schedule...some nights he will do a 6h stretch, some nights he will eat every 2h

Are you pumping for the same length of time? yes
Are you pumping in between feeds? no, only in place of feeds
How long does it take LO to nurse vs. time to pump same amount?
nurse: 20mins max
pump: about 40 (I get 2nd let-down & I don't stop until i'm empty

@Mrs. Bee: See, I thought this too... but it doesn't explain both sides? I only feed on one side at a time...so I expect the other side to be full & yield more milk at the pump but it just isn't

@Mrs. Bee: Very true! @TurtleDoves: Do you have a LC who weighs the baby before/after a feeding? My LC did that so you knew exactly how much they were getting at each feeding and it was super helpful!
@junebugmama: :) I figure the 4 months I gave him was better than nothing!! I actually tried to start up again but he wouldn't even consider going back so I guess that helped with my mommy guilt :)

@babyjmama: Aww thanks <3 I really became a total nutcase with all of my issues, however, I think it was meant to be. I love helping Mama's breastfeed. I think I finally found my calling.

Remember any breast milk your LO got was a special gift that only you were able to give.

when i was ep with charlie, i was able to pump waaaaay more than when i pump with olive who is almost all ebf. babies are more efficient at removing milk, so maybe your lo is removing a lot of milk and leaving less for you to pump?

Here's a few other questions that I might need answers too:

How many times did you pump before? Are you feeding at the same times you were pumping? Are you pumping for the same length of time? Are you pumping in between feeds? How long does it take LO to nurse vs. time to pump same amount?

@TurtleDoves: How old is LO now? (I'm a breast feeding mentor, studying to be an IBCLC) I might have an answer but just need to ask a few questions.

@TurtleDoves: Hmmm...I've never seen this specific question, but I know when I was both pumping and BF my LC suggested that I pump after my nursing session. It would help build up my stash (even if it was just .5-1oz/time) and help increase my supply. Do you have a LC you could talk to? I think it's great that you've been able to go back to nursing!!! I was always told that the baby will take what they need from the breast, but it's so much easier to guzzle down a bottle just until it's empty that they will go until it's gone. If that makes sense?

I started EP when LO was 3w because he was just *not* latching properly, despite all efforts.
But, every week he gets better an every week, I drop a pump session and add a breast feed.
I started breastfeeding more this week--like 75% of his feedings are at the breast and the rest are bottles.
But, the problem is...when I used to pump all his feedings, i'd get a feedings worth if not more (usually more!)
Now that I breastfeed again, I am not getting that.
This is an example of what I mean:

1st feed----breast
2nd feed----breast
3rd feed---breast
4th feed----pump (only got 3oz)
5th feed---breast
6th feed----pump (only got 2.5 oz)

If I am spacing them out, as I normally would...then why am I not getting enough for a feeding? Any ideas?

ETA: 4oz is a feeding; I typically would get about 5.5oz per pump session
