@sunny: Gotcha! I also didn't realize they do one main checking and can branch into many mini savings.

@snowjewelz: I think trying to track too many debit cards would be confusing. Instead, I would use the C360 accounts as holding areas for money and then continue to use your main checking account to pay the bills, then transfer over the money from C360 when its paid.

So you'd accumulate up $X for a planned expense in C360, then once the money is spent, you transfer it over to checking and pay the bill.

@snowjewelz: No, I don't have a debit card for each account. I wonder if you could request one. The other thing is it sets accounts up as one checking and multiple savings accounts so there is a few days delay to transfer back to another bank. However, you can access with atm card at any point.

I like Capital One 360 for setting up and monitoring multiple individual checking accounts. We have ones for car registration/repair, car insurance, Christmas, life insurance, travel and home improvement. We do 1/12 monthly deposits.

Rollover! Everything previous posters said. We also use mint to keep track and the final month numbers get put into a spreadsheet by my husband.

I agree with roll over funds. I do that for things that I don't spend on regularly (like clothes). I use Mint and it was fairly easy to set up rollover budgets vs. non-rollovers (things like eating out and entertainment).

We do something similar as previous posters. Our budget is broken into 4 main categories: Fixed monthly, variable monthly, irregular, and one-time/big expenses.

The monthly items are paid through our main account, the one-time/big expenses paid through our savings account, and irregular expenses are paid from a sinking fund (separate checking account): http://www.daveramsey.com/blog/stop-the-panic-sinking-fund

In other words, for the irregular expenses, we estimate the yearly cost and divide by 12. We add up all that, and set up an automatic transfer with that total # from the main account to the sinking fund, monthly. So, according to the pic below, we transferred $242 monthly into our sinking account, for that year.

Agree with Chillybear. That's how we manage our insurance budget since it is billed 2x a year and is a fairly large bill.

You can take the cost per year for those items and divide by 12. then say you dont buy diapers/do landscaping it rolls over to the next month

(1) How do you budget for bulk purchases? For example, if I'm only buying diapers every few months b/c I buy in bulk @ Target when there's a good gift card deal. But I haven't figured out how often I do that. Do I just let my "baby" category roll over till the month that I buy bulk so the rollover $ should cover it?

(2) How do you budget for things that don't happen all the time? For example, landscaping is only really from like spring-fall, but then spring/fall clean up costs extra. Plus there will be snow plowing here & there during the winter. I'm thinking to just keep my landscaping budget at X, and for the months that there is no lawn mowing, then that $ should cover the clean up's and any snow removal...
