Sigh, they have already accepted an offer it's been on the market for less that a week. I drove by it today and loved it, the property backs up to hops fields

I'd keep an open mind and go look at the house. You might get the answer you're looking for upon seeing it (you might automatically get the feeling of "yes this is the one" or "no way").

If you look at it, and it's still a possibility, I say go for it. Especially if you could afford the vacation home down the road!

I personally wouldn't buy that home and sell yours if it is in your immediate future plans to move(within three years). Think about all of the hidden costs of moving/buying/selling. Paying a realtor X 2. Move in costs with the new home. Move out costs for your current. I think people tend to overlook those costs when it comes to buying and selling houses especially when you don't plan to stay in the new one that long. I'd just stay put. Plus, living with some of the downsides in your current home will spur you guys to make some decisions going forward, instead of slow-leaking them if you move into a house which ticks more boxes but doesn't fulfill the dream completely.

@Bluebonnet: also worth mentioning it is the house nearby we could rent out and our current house we cannot because of its age and quirks

@youboots: It sounds like if DH gets a new job, you could move, but you don't have to move right away.

If this is THE house, then I think its smart to move now and commit to living in the house a certain amount of time (ex - 2 years then re-evaluate based on DH's job). Since the house is cheaper than your current house, you have a lot more flexibility in your budget and could save more towards the forever home in Oregon.

@Foodnerd81: oh and I was part of a military family and moved around a lot. I don't think I would want to move her past elementary school. Realistically the long end of DH new job would be 5 years.

@Foodnerd81: we will for sure go look at it. But it has everything we want on paper. For me it's 90% the town and 10% the house. I love this town and community. If we stayed in our current house I'd drive her an hour a day to go to preschool and possibly private k-8 there.

No we would not have to move. On the flip side with a smaller mortgage we could afford a vacation home in Central Oregon at some point.

@youboots: if he got a new job a month after you moved into the new house, you could still stay there as long as you want, right? He wouldn't have to move for a new job, just would be able to easily? Do you have any deadlines for when you want to be in a long term home? Like for me, I wanted to be in at least our long term town by second grade or so for my older daughter, figuring I didn't really want to make her switch schools if we could help it.

I will say we put off moving and buying a house for a while due to uncertainty with dhs job, but finally had to just make the leap and buy. But we were in a too small condoand really had to get into a bigger place, where it sounds like you can stay in your current house as long as you want.

I would go look at the new house. If you absolutely love it, maybe you go for it. But in my experience most of the time I look at a place and think it's nice but not exactly right for us anyway.

We have been in our current home almost 5 years. It's over 100 years old and we have fixed it up. I know it is not our forever home.

DH will get a new job but we have no idea when it will be. It could be a year or 10 years- same company. His current job is amazing but we have to live in the area where we are living. With the new jobs (there are two channels to take) we could live anywhere as long as there is an airport.

The long term dream is to live in central Oregon. Really awesome climate, endless outdoor activities, the city we love has great schools and a walkable downtown. If he were to get a new job we could move there.

In the meantime a house just came on the market in a neighboring town- it's in the city I want to live in and I drive DD 30 min round trip to daycare there. Plus the house is about 25% less than what we could sell our house for. (ETA this only happens 1x a year)

It's so tough, I don't want to be hanging onto a what if. But I don't want to make a move and then be anxious to move to the big dream if DHs job pops loose. I would be just as happy raising my family in either place but DH prefers the high desert. Thoughts?
