@daniellemybelle: same. He *could* access them but he always asks. We do a morning and afternoon snack. Usually one thing but sometimes a fruit + a carb.

My DD can usually have a snack whenever she wants- except after dinner. She isn't a great eater so if she asks for food I know she is really hungry. I give her one "treat snack" (goldfish, graham crackers, etc) per day and she can have as many "fridge snacks" (yogurt, cheese, fruits, veggies, hummus...) as she wants. If it's healthy I don't care when she eats it. The only time I refuse a snack is after dinner because it's typically a stall tactic and she won't eat it anyway. ETA she is able to get into the fridge and get herself stuff but I keep the crackery stuff put up high.

We have snacks in a bin in the pantry that LO can access but (surprisingly) she always asks us first. Most of the snacks require some help from us to open so while she enjoys picking them herself, she can't actually eat them unless we help her.

There are plenty of times we say no to a snack and she throws a fit but to be honest, she's three and throws fits about everything, so I don't think it is the snack station's fault.

@Cole: my kid is obsessed even if it's the same two things everyday for weeks! lol

I'm glad we aren't the only household where the idea seems far fetched. It is something I've wanted to do since I was pregnant with our first but I just don't think it will work with her personality.

We only have a few options and it's consistently the same options so unless it's a new or out of the ordinary choice she doesn't really care and only eats it if she's hungry. We typically have fruit, some type of animal crackers, mini Lara bars or other type of granola bar, cheese sticks and nuts available. If I add a different type of granola bar than usual or a more interesting carb option she is obsessed for a day or two. I do limit for the new stuff but she's never gorged on cheese sticks or nuts etc so it's not really an issue to leave the whole bag and let her grab one/a handful.

I don't put out snacks because DS would eat all day long except at meals. He likes snacky foods way more than meal food and would just refuse to eat or try stuff. When we're home I offer morning and afternoon snacks. Usually apple slices or yogurt or peanut butter crackers.

They have access to all their snacks, but they're good about asking first and it's always around snack time (AM and PM).

Yeah, the snack station concept doesn't really work in my house, because my children will just snack away their already limited appetites for real meals. They can have fruit whenever they want, but other snacks they have to ask for.

We get a bag of apples each week and I ask my daughter if she is ready for her Afternoon Apple. That does the trick.

Do you give your kids access to all the snacks you have for them in the house? Or do you just set out snacks for the day and when they're gone, that's it and they have to wait until their next meal?
My daughter really struggles with self regulation and regularly refuses to even try even the most normal dinners. I know that's a control issue but I just don't want there to be something too good to pass up available and encourage more dinner refusals. What do you do? What would you do in this situation?
