@danda: that's a great point! My LO has been sleeping 8 hours straight at night for over a month now and my body has adjusted so now I wake up at around 7.5 he's ready to go (at first it was 3-4!) The first week or two will be trial and error I guess.

@Corduroy: thanks so much! This makes me feel much better about it :)

@Pirouette: To answer your bottle question, my LO didn't take the bottle at all when she started daycare. I imagined she (we) would be up all night but she actually slept fairly well. She did eat more between pick up and bedtime. It took her about a week to decide to take the bottle and we had some difficult Mondays after but we got on track after a few weeks.

I think it is also highly dependent on your body and something you may not be able to predict well. My daughter takes a bottle every 2 hours at daycare (four bottles) and likes to nurse that frequently if not more often when we're together. I only pump twice at work though. For some moms that would cause problems with leaking or decreasing supply but it had worked well for me for the past 3.5 months. Just want to offer perspective that conventional wisdom can help you avoid potential problems, but sometimes it's ok to deviate from that if you do so cautiously. In my case, DD had gone for a stretch of 12 hour STTN for a while so I had confidence in my own ability to go for a long time without emptying the breasts, with no issue other than discomfort after 8-10 hours +.

@Pirouette: I use the Lansinoh disposables as well! I have a couple nursing bras and I wear the pads in those. They have a hard enough exterior that the pad doesn't show through! When I've just worn the pads in a nursing tank, you can definitely see them, so I totally hear what you're saying! They seem fine in a bra though. :D

@Adira: good to know! Btw what kind of nursing pads do you wear? I have tons of the lansinoh disposables, which I wear to sleep, but I feel like they are a little bulky? Not sure if they'd look funny in work clothes (haven't worn a real bra in a while so not sure if they'd show through!)

@T.H.O.U.: I feel like it will be a bit of a hassle but I think you are right. I have an oversupply now, but I know that could take a huge hit!

When I went back to work, D was still nursing really frequently, but I couldn't do more than 3 pumping breaks. So I pumped every 3 hours (9, 12, 3). I did that until he was 10 months, when I dropped to 2 sessions (9, 2), and then dropped to one session (12) 2 weeks before his first birthday. I dropped that 2 days before he turned one. I wore nursing pads until the day I dropped that last pumping session. I don't remember that I ever leaked during the day, but usually had some spillage when I removed the pump.

If you can, I would try to pump 4 times for the first few weeks. For me, I think that really made the difference in establishing my supply and getting regulated for the pump. Plus like you, my baby was still eating at least every two hours.

Over time though I was easily able to go to just 3 pumpings per day.

@Pirouette: I've done both pumping every ~3 hours (9:00, 12:00, 3:30) and only twice a day (11:00 and 3:30) and basically got the same amount (though my boobs apparently have good storage, so I was able to go 4-5 hours between pumping). I'd say pump every 3 and you will probably be okay!

And here I am at 11.5 months and I STILL wearing nursing pads every day to work! I haven't leaked since 6-7 weeks, but I find the pads more comfortable than going without, especially immediately after pumping!

Good luck to you!!! <3

@Revel: yea the one good thing is I have a bit of a freezer stash and she'll be watched at my place so the milk is there however much she needs. It's interesting she eats less at home - I wonder if she anticipates you coming home or something?

@purrpletulips: yes, good idea! I'm going to bring in extra clothes for sure!

I pumped whenever I had a break (I'm a teacher), but it was solely because I was trying to pump over 40 ounces a day to cover what my kiddos were drinking. My initial plan, because I didn't know when I could pump, was to try it out in the days before hand. Kiddos had frozen milk, and I pumped when I thought I would have breaks. That way, I could see how engorged I would get as well as how much milk I could get.

pumping every 2.5 hours, wearing nursing pads and just in case I'd suggest keeping an all purpose shirt/sweater at your office.

@Pirouette: My LO is 8.5 months and will still nurse about every 2 hours when we're together and home.

She's always been fine with bottles but varies a lot in how much she drinks when we're apart. She drinks a lot of milk at daycare, and then less on the days she's home with her grandmas. We've just adjusted the amount of milk as time goes on. I sent a little extra in the beginning, in addition to providing frozen back up milk.

@septca: those are the exact times I was thinking. I am definitely going to wear pads the first few weeks! I remember you saying you had no issues, I hope I'm as lucky as you!

@Revel: @Corduroy: did your LOs continue to eat all day when you went back? She's not great with the bottle so I have a feeling she may not eat as much during the day and stockpile at night. I'm just hoping she won't fuss all day with it!

My LO was still nursing all the time when I went back to work. I pumped at 9, 12, and 3 and it worked out for me. Occasionally in the early days I pumped a 4th time just because I felt full. LO still nurses more frequently when I'm at home.

My LO sounds like yours when I went back to work - still nursing all the time. I did exactly what you suggest - pumped every 2.5 hours (3x at work) and hoped for the best! It worked out fine. I did have to add pumping sessions outside of work to keep up with her demands.

Good luck!

I found that I pumped the same amount whether I pumped 3x/day or every 2 hours, so I just got into a routine of pumping every three hours at work - at 10:30, 1:30, and 4:30. Your first few days back, you might want to wear nursing pads in case you leak, but that was never an issue for me.

I go back to work a week from tomorrow - eek! I know the typical advice is to pump when the baby eats, but as some of you know from my post a few weeks ago, I have a very hungry baby!! Many of you assured me that won't last forever, but sadly neither does my maternity leave haha. So she'll be 10.5 weeks when I go back, and I'm just wondering how to figure out when to pump when my baby isn't at all on a schedule yet and just eats pretty much all day. I can't pump all day at the office!

I generally leave the house around 8:45 am and I plan to leave around 5ish for the first few weeks (usually it's more like 6), so I'll be home by 5:30. I also plan to take Wednesdays off for the first few weeks to ease back into things. SO...how do I pump and avoid being a leaky mess at work if she's not on any schedule? Do I just wear lots of layers and pump every 2.5 hours and cross my fingers? Any advice from anyone who has been through this? I'm so nervous about leaking everywhere but I can't afford to leave early, take Wednesdays off AND pump every hour at work!
