Thanks all! I think I decided I'd rather get a used high chair or cheap Ikea one for under $20 than spend more money on additional kitchen chairs, a larger table that will be too big for the space, or folding chairs I don't have a place for.

The booster chairs are a good idea if we decide to buy additional chairs of the same kind--but again, I'm not sure of any benefits of buying an additional chair + booster as opposed to a cheap high chair at this time.

@ElbieKay: our beds both have under-bed storage boxes. And our couch currently stores LOs play tent and tunnel underneath. I think the folding chair idea is out because I have nowhere to store them. I'd rather have a second high chair out every day then to have two folding chairs stacked in a corner somewhere for kids to pull over on top of themselves.

@Anagram: I voted get a booster. It looks like you could get a couple of folding chairs and store them under your couch without them being visible. Close proximity to the table!

I would get a booster, and then purchase a few folding chairs for visitors when you have them. Folding chairs these days can look pretty nice, and can be inexpensive, and easy to put away when you're not using them.

I've found you can never have too many nice folding chairs! Especially when you entertain alot.

You could also look into those collapsible camping chairs. Not exactly elegant, I know.

If it will be an issue for 2+ years, I would look into buying a larger table at Ikea. We have this one which has a built-in leaf: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70213060/

@Anagram: I'm not sure what your kitchen setup is, but do you have bar stools with backs? We put H on those at my parent's house because there aren't enough chairs for everyone to sit at the table. Another thought: do you have a child-size activity table already? When we have people over, we set up H's table next to the big table and she eats there. She does get up sometimes but usually she will eat well.

@Foodnerd81: we store a stroller there now, haha. Also we park on the street now so our nanny can have our parking space, so having folding chairs in the car.....that would require either a whole lot of pre-planning or some awkwardness for drop in visitors. "Excuse me a few minutes while I walk 3 blocks away to get some chairs". haha.

None of this was a problem before kids, or even with just one kid because we could all just eat on the couch. But now that we have TWO, it really takes both parents to sit with them to help and then it seems awkward for us to sit at the table and ask our guests to sit on the couch.

I had two friends stop by randomly last night (they texted a few minutes in advance asking if we were home)--and we were just sitting down to eat and feed LO--so we offered them food and next thing I knew, we were one chair short. I guess this is just the new stage in having 2 kids eating at the same time--I'm not used to it yet!~

@Anagram: could you store folding chairs in the trunk of your car?

I her you in no space. We have a folding bar stool that happens to slide in next to our washer dryer in the tiny laundry closet. A folding stool might be smaller and easier to stash somewhere, if you wanted to go in that direction.

But yea I agree that a clip on chair and flimsy table is a bad combo.

@Astro Bee: I hate our chairs. They are cheap from Target.com and we bought them when we lived for 1 year in a small 1 bedroom apartment, pre-kids. HOWEVER, my husband does not like anything in this world as much as he likes saving money, so we still have the college-apartment-style chairs, hehe. He keeps saying one day when we buy a house, we'll get a "real" dining set.

@oliviaoblivia: I would love a bigger table theoretically, but I can't see us staying here for more than another 2 years or so, so I hate to buy a bigger table now and then have it not fit our new space later. I know 98% of people would have no issue buying a table for 2 years, but my husband it not 98% of people and would find that supremely wasteful. And expensive.

@Ginabean3: Do you have closet space somewhere? All we have is the girls' closet (not a walk in, packed to the gills), and our master bedroom closet (a small walk in, but also holds everything else--vacuum, Christmas tree, luggage, tools, wrapping paper.) It's a walk in that we can't walk in because it's jammed full of stuff. Not sure I want to buy 2 folding chairs that I'd have to store out in plain sight.

Also, I know a clip on was mentioned, but I think they aren't supposed to be used on glass tables. And yours looks like it MIGHT be glass but hard to tell from the pic. If it's not and to do some research and find that it works on your table, I highly recommend the Phil & Ted's clip on.

I vote bigger table too, or get used to not eating at the table when people come.

We picked up some bar height chairs on the side of the road for DS to use at our table. We trained him to stay on the chair while he is eating. Honestly it has been super helpful because now when we are at friends houses we can just sit him on a chair and give him his food and he will stay put. One friend doesn't have a table so we all eat sitting on the floor/couch. If he sits on the floor with us, he is constantly getting up and playing. But we can stick him on a chair and he'll stay there to eat.

I would either get two space saving boosters and folding chairs for guests or two space saving boosters and a bigger table. You are going to need a bigger table eventually if you want to have space for guests. Maybe get one with leaves in it so you can make it bigger if needed.

I have a clip on Chicco chair on a small and not-so-sturdy table. It works for us. But it is a pain to clean (I usually just scrub it down with a sponge). The real issue I have is that it takes up a lot of space on the dining table itself because we have to clear a large space for her because she grabs everyone's plates. So it's hard to have four adults eating at the table plus the baby.

So I vote either a clip on with a bigger table or a separate high chair with a tray.

ETA: IKEA has a cheap high chair but it looks like it may have a big footprint.
