@stiffaknee: Hmmm... so if I have already opened the packaging to let it air out over a month, and washed the mattress pad twice, do you think that's sufficient "off-gassing?"

@shopaholic: it's my understanding that all mattresses have flame retardant chemicals (by law). So your mattress may be made of organic cotton/hemp/ whatever, but it must still meet us flame retardant guidelines, so it still has the chemicals.

@stiffaknee: Not to try and threadjack here - but if I bought an organic mattress and organic mattress pad - would I still need to"offgas" or there should be no toxic gas to do that right?

@scg00387: I'm like you and bought all that stuff.

@PrincessBaby: I don't think it could hurt, if anything, just protect your mattress and something easy to wash. Peace of mind is priceless isn't it? And baby H is still so young and new, I think you have a normal-ish amount of paranoia. :)

If it gives you peace of mind, by all means it's not a waste of money. I'd just make sure you're doing the things that the AAP recommends too - swaddling, on their back, fan running, in your room (if possible).

I don't know about this cover, but I did buy an organic cotton mattress pad for my LO's floor bed. The bed itself is a standard mattress. My reasoning was that an extra layer between whatever is in the mattress and LO can't be bad. The pad just makes the mattress thicker, it's not plush.

@PrincessBaby: ack that scares me. - weve only had him in his crib but will be taking our first trip next month and have I use a pack and play! My dad tried to gift me a 20 yer old mattress he saved .... Yikes.

In some ways you're probably better off with a used crib mattress that hasn't been actually used. The off gassing would've already happened!

If its any consolation I spent a stupid amount on an organic mattress and pad bc I was concerned about chemicals and SIDS ... And an angelcarr monitor (but to be honest we've never turned it on bc I'm more comfortable than I thought and terrified of false alarms!

@princessbaby: i don't know how old your baby is but when we first brought our LO home i was obsessed with SIDS as well. especially after a distant relative lost their baby. i can say that the older he got the calmer i became... but honestly i don't think seeing someone to talk out your anxieties would be a bad idea.

Every night on my iphone when I'm in bed I review infant CPR. Yes. I just admitted that. I want to be ready if that beeper goes off!!! 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths...That's the last thing I think to myself as I fall asleep:(

@stiffaknee: Thank you! That's so helpful! Her mattress really did seem to be like new, very firm, so I went with it. That was when I was still preg and did not know I would become obsessed with preventing SIDS! I probably would have bought a new one if I had been this educated. But I truly feel like her mattress is as safe as it can be...And I'm just nuts.

@Kemma: Yeah, I probably got duped! I wish that I did not let this fear drive me Cray Cray!!!!!

First let me just say, I hate my laptop, as I had typed a response, and somehow it got deleted. Ugh.

Anywho. I did a lot of research about SIDS because, about a week after my daughter was born, a friend of mine lost her niece to SIDS. If wrapping your mattress eases your mind, by all means, do it. I cant say whether or not it prevents SIDS, but sometimes what we moms need is peace of mind (I bought an angelcare monitor and, knowing full well that if it went off and my daughter wasnt breathing that I might not be able to recessitate her anyways, it still helped me sleep...knowing that if she did stop breathing, id at least be able to do something).

I had the opportunity to meet with the owners of a local childrens mattress factory and he told me that, safety wise, the best place for a baby is swaddled, on a hardwood floor, with a fan going and no rugs, furniture or anything like that near them. But since thats not practical, the most important thing is to make sure that there is good air circulation (fans!) that the mattress is super duper firm (which is why a new mattress is recommended with every child-the mattresses seem to lose firmness the more a child sleeps/jumps on it) and that the room is cool.

@Princessbaby: the whole gas thing is based on the assumption that the mattresses let off a heavy toxic gas that can supress the childs breathing. Some people will put their mattress outside (which is recommended if you wrap it) to, I guess, air it out, but the whole theory of these toxic gases is that theyre created by the mixture of the flame retardant chemicals and bodily fluids, so, technically, airing it out wouldnt help.

@scg00387: I actually read about it on other sites, but this is the one I ordered from bc s/h was quicker/cheaper...There are not a lot of places to buy it. H's crib/mattress is used. The woman we bought from ended up cosleeping and said he never really slept in the crib, but either way- it's used. So that freaked me out! And I figured this cover is cheaper than a new mattress, and I learned last week while trying to get her to sleep in the crib/mattress my mom got for her to sleep in while we visited them- babies won't sleep on any old mattress and she will STTN in her own crib, so now I'm scared to switch it out! I'm probably a sucker & I realize that:(. I paid $100 for a Snuza Hero also and she pretty much always wears her "beeper."

It look like the only difference is that it goes all the way around the mattress? We never lay LO on his tummy (to breathe in toxins) so for me I wouldn't go for it.
I do believe that if it gives you peice of mind then it is worth it! Paranoia can be paralyzing. I've been through it...still I through it!

haha!

But seriously I have read some more compelling information about used cribs vs. new cribs and theories on mold, etc. that might be mitigated by a certain mattress pad (complete speculation). Do they say what exactly that pad is made of/how it prevents it?? If it makes you feel better, it's worth it either way :)

Mmmkay I have mentioned in other threads that I live in paralyzing fear of SIDS...I google stuff about it a lot, and I came upon info on this BebeSafe mattress cover and how in NZ, everyone uses it and they basically have ZERO SIDS deaths.

I might be a sucker, but I totally ordered it. I even got the expedited shipping so I can hurry up and get it on her mattress! I know...I have some type of OCD thing about SIDS!

Have you heard of it? Do you believe it's possible for a mattress cover to prevent SIDS?
