I teach high school agriculture, and just had my kids in my food science class read this article today. I am fascinated by it and would totally try it, but I don't have an intolerance for dairy, so it wouldn't be something that anyone in our family would need regularly.

As a quick side note, because I can't help myself, 95% of conventional dairy products come from cows that are AI'ed and have experienced genetic testing. Many organic farms also use AI and genetic testing. In order to provide a steady supply of dairy products for consumers and income for their families, farmers must have a predictable way to ensure that their herd calves throughout the year. Bulls, especially dairy breeds, can be very aggressive and dangerous to handle, so many farms choose not to have them on-site. Farms, with the equipment and experienced work force, specialize in producing sperm which is sold to dairies. I totally believe that the educated public has the right to decide how their food is produced (through the spending of their $). However, in the US less than 2% of the population is involved in production agriculture, and this has lead to giant gap in knowledge.

Yes! This is so interesting! I actually know a few people who own cows and they have jerseys that produce A2 milk. Everyone I know who has a lactose intolerance, tolerates A2 milk just fine!

And it's not frankenmilk, it's just from a different type of cow - like the article explains.

This is so great.

@littlejoy: Just to play Devil's advocate to your position are we saying that other mammals are the gold standard to how we should live our lives? Humans are different than the general mammal population in an infinite number of ways. I, personally, don't think milk consumption should be the sticking point where we decide that humans have it wrong. Either way, since your family doesn't drink milk anyway, it sounds like this finding won't have any effect on you, but it could be wonderful for people who do enjoy milk but suffer discomfort from drinking it.

I LOOOOVE milk. We go through at least a gallon each week. I don't have any adverse reaction, but if I did I would seriously look into A2 milk. It sounds really interesting.

I don't worry what I eat compared to other mammals. I like baked goods and cooked meat too, and I'm pretty sure other mammals don't eat that stuff either :silly:

I buy a2 milk for LO sometimes for the reason it is meant to be gentler on tummies otherwise I buy milk from a semi local diary (not raw, from the supermarket).

@littlejoy: Scientists didn't find a way to alter the milk though. It's like if we milked puppies, a poodle might give A1 and a labrador might give A2. Weird analogy I know but the best I could think of. I believe they are kiwi cows, I was only reading about it the other day.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Around the world, the average is about 4 years (when it comes to breast milk). -- But, a lot of people argue that humans don't need the nutrition from any milk (breast or cow's) after 1 year.

Okay, I was just thinking: if my kiddo had a peanut allergy, and scientists found a way to modify peanuts in a way (or found a breed of peanuts) that didn't cause a reaction, I would totally support that. I'm think my personal beliefs on milk make me think this is a bad idea , but In general, I do like that our society has the resources to provide people with products that are safe and that they love.

I've heard it's easy but I honestly don't drink much milk products in general, except for some in my coffee, (i do cook with it) so I feel like it'd be very wasteful. And nuts are so expensive. if i was buying a bunch of almonds, I'd be more inclined to make my own almond butter!

Raw makes me nervous. So nervous.

@littlebug: No worries ... I don't drink milk, I believe in the studies that show the link between milk and osteoporosis, and I feel badly for the cows that are removed from their mothers at 1 day old. I'd say my response is an emotional one. Logically though, sure, all they need is a DNA sample to test the cow. But, it's just a cyclical thing of testing the cows, segregating them, force insemination, etc. to get this "perfect" milk for consumers. It just feels very unnatural (the overall picture). -- I know that 99% of users here will not agree with me, and that's entirely fine.

Back to my original point, if I or my family had adverse reactions to any food, I would remove it from our diets. With milk specifically, it's not needed for a healthy diet.

I think it sounds great for a large population of people who otherwise can't drink milk! It's interesting that there was a mutation that caused cows to change the composition of their milk. I'd be willing to try it, for sure. Almond and coconut milk, etc, are very heavily processed and I did some research on the additives and I'm not a fan. I'm much more comfortable with the pasteurization and homogenization of cow milk (no raw for me!)

@littlejoy: I don't follow. A2 protein is produced naturally in cows. It just so happens that the cows that most of the Western world uses as dairy cows produce A1 protein. But cows in several other countries, and certain breeds of cows, are A2-dominant. They never had the genetic mutation that occurred 10000 years ago. So I'm not sure how it's Frankenmilk. Am I missing something? (I'm genuinely asking, not trying to be a smartass. I sometimes think questions like that come off as challenging.)

Interesting. It sounds like there's a lot of innovation/marketing going on in milk now (i.e. Coke's Fairlife high protein, lactose free milk).

I thought the tie in with Food Safety was interesting as well. Raw milk is big in my area of California. I doubt this A2 milk would impact that but people in food safety are trying to combat raw milk any way they can.

@littlejoy: This isn't about the lactose, though. It's about the protein. The protein in milk right now is A1, due to a naturally-occurring mutation dating back 1000 years (I don't remember the exact timeframe from the article). Scientists actually believe that most people who experience discomfort from drinking milk is not actually from the lactose but rather from this A1 protein. The A2 protein in this new milk is less offensive to mammal digestive tracts (A2 is what breastmilk contains, hence why it's easy on newborn tummies). A2 milk won't solve lactose intolerence, because that's a milk sugar, not a protein.

I don't drink milk ... I guess if I or my family had an issue with lactose, I'd just do non-dairy. Humans are the only mammals who drink milk past infancy, which is why many people have issues with milk. Our bodies aren't meant to process it. :(

My mom just sent me this article from her food safety group (she's a retired foods safety analyst). A2 milk claims to be easier on people's digestive systems, thereby eliminating the abdominal discomfort that many people (myself included) get from drinking milk, which currently contains A1 proteins. This doesn't solve the problem of lactose intolerance or milk protein allergies, but it's interesting nonetheless. Kind of wishing I was in CA so I could get it. I miss drinking real milk.

What do you think? CA Bees - will you try it?
