@prettylizy: did you ever build this? I really like this idea. I love the idea of a floor bed, but we got LO a pretty expensive mattress that I'd really prefer to not put directly on the floor!

Thanks for you input everyone, I think this might be a summer project for DH and I :) He's on board to build a modified bedframe for her, and even mentioned making the headboard a chalkboard or if we do upholstered a french memo board style for her to display artwork on.

I like the look of that. We have a floor bed but I've been thinking of raising it up a couple inches off the ground too, just so she's not breathing in as much floor dust.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Anywhere. We have bed rail on one side, but he uses it mostly because he wants to cuddle to it. We have had him in hotel beds and it has never been an issue.

I think that's fine. The intent is to allow the child to get in and out of bed easily and to make their own bed. (Thus why ours doesn't look so "polished"!)

@brownie: does your son sleep in the middle or the edge? if you were to put him in his own regular bed would you add rails to prevent falls onto the floor?

This isn't montessori, but my son co-beds with us on our queen bed in a regular/high frame. He uses the dog stairs to get up and can get off any high bed anywhere (he isn't 2 yet and has been doing this since he was 12 months old). So there are many ways to have that independence.

also- for everyone who loves this bed, here are the plans to build it for yourself. Apparently it's a knock off of a PBK bed :)

So far as I am aware, the idea behind a floor bed is to give the child a safe bed that they can easily access without help. For a young toddler the floor is both the safest and easiest but there is no reason another style wouldn't fit that criteria. I watched a little girl who starting at 2 had a queen sized bed that she could safely sleep in and climb in and out of so the way I see it that meet the same goal as a floor bed.

@Mrs. Pen: We would be modifying the bed anyhow since the plans I found to make it are for a twin bed and we have a queen mattress for her room so I think we could make it work. My biggest concern about it being up on a platform is that it's higher and she might roll off and hurt herself :T #firstimemommyproblems

Oooh I like that!!! So pretty!

As for taking out slats, you could however usually the frame extends so the mattress wouldn't fit inside... Does that make sense? Your have to deconstruct the frame a bit.

What about a platform bed frame? It would require pretty baby to climb on the platform and then into the bed. But they make low platforms and it would still allow for independence

@prettylizy: I've started thinking about this too. The idea of just a mattress icks me out, but I think the floor bed is a great idea. I'd love to have some kind of headboard.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I was hoping just to take the cross slats out so the mattress is still on the floor but it has some structure around it. I know there are bees out here that could give some insight :)

I am so glad you posted this. I was wondering if a (super) low bed is still Montessori too!

So I may be jumping the gun a little (or a lot) but I'm starting to think about what Prettybaby's 'big girl' room is going to look like. Right now we have a queen bed in that room as it is our guest room. Our plan was always to keep that same bed in there and just put rails on it that way if we had visitors they could borrow her bed and she could bunk in with us (or her someday sibling) during that time.

Now I'm thinking a Montessori style floor bed might be a better fit for us as my parenting style evolves, but I kind of want something a little more polished aesthetically, especially for guests. I'm thinking about modifying this Anna White bed frame plan so that there is something holding the bed in place and a headboard but still sitting on the ground. Do you think that defeats the purpose of a floor bed?
