We did checks after the full interval of crying (so ten solid minutes, etc). If it was on the 10 or 15 min check and she was only quiet for like A minute then we usually just kept the clock going. But if she was quiet for like 3 min we'd restart it. We also sort of went on what she needed/how she sounded. Our LO was not great at getting the paci in herself when we did sleep training so I erred on the side of going in so I could pop that back in. And also because our LO generally fell back to sleep right after a check.
