Why couldn't they schedule an appt three weeks out?? (Actually our ped office does that- they don't always have the residents schedules that far out since their days change. This is how it goes at my doc's office. I call and leave a message with her nurse who calls me back within a couple of hours. I tell her what I need and she calls in the prescription to the pharmacy. I don't go to the pharmacy first - they always screw things up! Also, my doc's well visits book up like 6+ months in advance. I made my well visit or this year in July at my post partum visit last June! You should be able to book way in advance. My frustration is in how lengthy and involved a process it was to simply get a refill to cover the gap: Monday - I realize I need to refill to start a new pack on Sunday. Call pharmacy and request refill. I also had tried to make my yearly appointment last week and was told it was too early and to call back in 2 weeks to schedule. Tuesday - Pharmacy calls me and says no refills left, even though it states I have one left on the last prescript they gave me. I call doctor's office and shuffled to voicemail. Wednesday - Doctor's office calls me back, schedules appointment and then tells me I have to leave a message with their prescription department to get a refill. I do that. Friday afternoon - After calling twice, finally get notice Friday at 5:00 p.m. that the pharmacy got the prescription. Doctor's office is now closed for the weekend. Saturday - Go to pick up prescription and it's the wrong one. No way to fix it until Monday. Finally sort it out, but by then it's Thursday and almost a week off birth control. I would much much rather have gone to a CVS wellness clinic that is available 7 days a week, had the nurse take my BP and advise me on the risks and have the prescription filled right then and there. We moved the appointment, and guess what, it snowed that day too! When I finally was able to get in, I had lapsed on my scrip, but my doc told me not to do that again, he'd call in a filler for me based on the fact that my appointment was actually scheduled. But I've always had doctors who would get me BCP if needed. Usually they'd just write a couple extra refills on to the annual prescription do that I have scheduling flexibility. @PurplePumps: every insurance I've ever been on requires 365 days between appointments for things covered annually. It can be a little annoying with scheduling sometimes but not too bad. However, my doctor will call in a month or two of refills if I run out before my appt. I think it's good to get checked out, even if you don't get a pap smear. Once my blood pressure was high, so doctor wanted to take me off the bcps. There's a risk of blood clots with high BP like a PP mentioned. There is a lot of evidence to support this. I never hold pills hostage. There is no evidence for paps yearly unless you are high risk, they should be every 3 or 5 years depending on your age if you are low risk. I would much rather visit my family doctor and have them check me out each year. And they can fit me in much quickly and have a more comprehensive view of my health history.
