I am glad to read this and know I am not the only one worrying about LO's eating! How old is your LO?

My God, I would be so mad at your nanny and fire her!! If you repeatedly ask that she doesn't put out snacks 24/7, she needs to listen or find another job.

While my LO has periods of not eating I have to say it is not as bad... Over the holidays he literally was eating very little and I was so worried. We just cut all his snack time then. So we pretty much only offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for 2 weeks (and he still wasn't eating a lot, you'd think he'd be starving). Gladly now daycare is reopened after holidays, and our eating habits seem to be back to "normal".

So I'd say cut all snack time in that case, until she starts eating more!

I haven't resorted to showing a video yet as we still haven't given LO a lot of screen time except for the teeth brushing video I played to distract him for teeth brushing time. I don't want to make it a norm to watch a video when he eats, because I am more afraid that he won't eat unless he watches a video in the future. I did for a few times read to him while he's eating when I was desperate.

This is our norm, as well, though now at 21 months, he's suddenly trying things again if I just leave it in his tray and ignore it. But this tasting hasn't led to a breakthrough or anything. His diet is 90% chicken and fruit at this point. We have many days where he only eats a banana for breakfast and dinner, or he eats no dinner at all. But he doesn't seem to be affected by it and his weight is just a little below average, so his ped doesn't think there's any reason to worry.

And almost everyone I've talked to with older children who were picky toddlers say that as long as you're offering the foods and not just giving them only the foods they eat, they'll eventually come out of it. It does seem to help if I offer the foods I know he doesn't eat first at mealtime and then add in the foods he will eat.

I struggle with this with my son and really, the only thing that has made a difference in terms of the amount that he eats is to offer foods that he eats at mealtimes. I gave up (for now) on the idea that oatmeal is only for breakfast. Sometimes he asks for it for dinner and I make it for him.

It's the same with my DD. On some days all she does is play with her food and has been outright refusing to sit on her highchair. The other day, she ate so much - like a teenager (first time I saw that). My conclusion is I don't starve her enough. When she hardly touches her breakfast, I'm quick to offer a filling snack and she ends up grazing all day. I haven't figured it out yet and when I do she'll decide to change, but my plan for now is to stop giving her snacks. Soooo hard when I know she's hasn't eaten enough during the previous meal.

@StbHisMrs: When the kids just aren't eating, we read books to the kids at the table while they eat (aka we feed them while they're distracted)... or if we're really desperate, we might play a video to distract them!

My LO barely eats 2 ounces per meal (3x) so we serve as calorie dense foods as possible; butter, coconut oil, olive oil, pumpkin, banana, added flax seed, etc.

One more question for you! How does she eat lunch and dinner on the weekends, when the babysitter isn't around and she's not snacking during the day?

I was going to suggest something along the lines that mrbee did. Maybe serving her favorite food at lunch/dinner will get her to eat more and you could do something like pancakes for breakfast?

@StbHisMrs: We struggle a lot with the kids not eating too! It's really tough... they rarely eat more than one good meal a day.

Have you tried serving eggs/oatmeal for lunch or dinner?

She's always been a bit picky but I'm starting to really worry about her eating habits now. She eats a nice breakfast of eggs, oatmeal, or steel cut oats, the rest of the day she refuses to eat. I think part of it is her babysitter just sets out snacks for her 4 year old so she is constantly grazing, I've ask numerous times that she not do that.

She will take 1 small bite of lunch and finer and be done. We can get her to take 3 bites of banana and she'll eat her greek yogurt. That is about it. We're thinking of giving her pediasure since she's not getting enough of anything.

She's very irritable, prolongs bedtime, whines and cries a lot.
Has anyone else gone through this?
