I would totally plan a different day trip each day! My mom's going on vacation next month and I'll be taking off a few days to spend with DD too. I'm planning -

Zoo (~30 min away)
Aquarium (1+ hr away)

Then probably trying to get library passes to the children's museum and fish hatchery (our normal go-to spots for free fun).

This is what we did this week:

M: I hadn't slept well, so we hung out at home. The boys watched tv and than we did yoga together and played blocks. Played in the backyard a bit.

T: I took them for a stroller ride on a hiking path and then we went to a park with a pump track and they rode their bikes. Met up with a friend there.

W: We do a weekly hiking group do met up with them and walked around a small lake.

R: Baked zucchini cupcakes with caramel frosting. Played in the backyard.

F: Today we are going back to the same hiking trail I did on Tuesday with our hiking group friends and then the dryer repairman is coming.

After naps we typically just read books, play with magic sand or play do, and I make dinner. Or they run around like wild animals.

Go on a nature walk around your neighborhood, my 4 year old thinks this is the most fun thing to do right now! I let her pick up sticks/leaves/rocks/ect. and she examines them. I also taught her this last time how to use a pencil and paper to "copy" a leaf.

@looch: My inner OCD is freaking out at tie-dye, even if you found a non messy way to do it. :silly:

@Ajsmommy: I wish we could do some sort of fruit festival, that would be so fun!

@tinyperson: I think my younger LO would have a blast with that kind of glitter glue activity.

I just did this about 3 weeks ago. It was so much fun. We went to a children's museum, we went to a peach festival, we went to an amusement park geared towards younger kids (luckily right in our town) and we went to the pool and beach (in our community). It was a blast. As for activities in the house we baked, painted and made pasta/glue designs.

We had a two week staycation in July, my inlaws were in town, but one thing that we did was tie dye. My son loved it and it wasn't insanely messy, considering we used squeeze bottles to disperse the dye.

Otherwise, we tend to take it easy. I am not a big fan of crowds, especially on my downtime.

@Cherrybee: :grin:

@Kemma: picnics are a great idea, my LOs love picnics!

@jape14: there are a couple of fairly large construction sites in our neighborhood, so we'll probably at least walk by a few of them next week. Good idea!

@Andrea: I've actually kind of forgotten that maybe we should relax too. After all, they are both going to have big changes when they start school the following week. There aren't many movies that they will watch, but they love a good Paw Patrol marathon.

Oh and do your kids like movies? Mine don't, but my friend on Facebook has been watching a lot of movies with her 3 year old this summer, at home. Pop some popcorn and watch movies in the afternoon.

The kids have been home with me for most the summer and we've just been using the opportunity to relax. It's a long summer and I don't want to burn out, lol. I focus on one activity a day: have a play date, bake something, go for a swim, run some errands, etc. Then they play together with their toys, do crafts (nothing Pinterest-y, just regular coloring, painting, gluing, etc), and play in our backyard. Since you don't have a garden, do you have a bath tub? I fill ours up and they'll play in there for a long time. :-)

I've been doing that this week (nanny is on vacation) with my almost-2 year old. We went to the natural science museum, kids' museum, local park with a carousel (twice this week!), and had a play date. I also took him to run errands I usually do solo or on the weekends (Target, grocery store) and out to lunch one day. By far his favorite activity was a walk to see a construction site with an excavator and a bulldozer. I thought about doing a craft at home but DS was happy to just read a billion books so we did that instead. We did bake a cake over the weekend and he loved it, so that might be a fun activity!

@sandy: unfortunately, the museums have a very weak excuse for A/C here, but luckily, I doesn't get all that hot, so it's tolerable. :silly: And whoa! I'm totally ordering some of those sticky mosiacs! Both of them, but especially E, would love them! That's also a great idea about making cards. They could have fun doing it and then at least it won't end up in the trash in a few days.

@Cherrybee: maybe I should just come spend the week with you! :silly: Hee hee. My kids played in my MIL's tiny garden constantly while we were there, and she really doesn't have much room other than for a sandbox, a few toys and a garden hose. It was great though because it's completely walled in so they could be outside while I had my coffee inside.

@lamariniere: I wish "let her loose" was an accurate description. E wont do ANYTHING independently for more than a minute or two. She has a play house, a water table, a space hopper, lots of balls, three different bikes, two tunnels and a hula hoop and, yet, she is still on my case the entire time she's out there. She will dig alongside me for a while but if I try to get anything productive done she will start misbehaving. :bummed: Its been a long week!

I would definitely try to do an outing a day if the weather is nice. Even if it's just packing a picnic and meeting friends at the park. But when the weather is nice I love heading to the splash pad or zoo. And if it's super hot I head to the children's museum bc of the AC :silly:

For home activities/crafts - I love sticky mosaics (do you get Amazon?). They have them for beginners (so E's age) where the stickers are bigger and easier to manage. And then they have more involved designs with smaller stickers for 4+. C recently got a dinosaur one that you stick stickers on and then punch out and make into dinosaur figures that she loves.

Play dough or play sand is always a big hit too. You could make your own as an activity too.

If you like to do nature walks you could take a bag or bucket and fill it with random stuff you find on your walk. Then get a big sheet of paper and let them glue (kids seem to love glue!) everything to the paper. You can have L recreate your walk with the stuff you found and add illustrations incorporating the stuff you found as well.

C has always loved painting. You could just let them do free paint but sometimes I like to try and make something useful. If you had cardstock you can make postcards or thank you cards. Just cut to fit an envelope or fold to make thank you cards for future use. You can draw images or their initial on the card and have them paint them with watercolors. Or something that is more time consuming is to put paint on a dish and have them dot paint with q-tips and fill in the simple picture or initial with mult-color dots

If you like baking I would make it a full activity of looking up a recipe, making the shopping list, etc

I hope you have fun with your week off with your cities!!!

@Cherrybee: it's times like these when I wish we had our own garden so I could just let them loose. And indoor snowdome?! Sounds super fun!

We just bought a book with 100 things to do with kids outside and it has some fun - free- ideas. My DD's favourite is to make a nature bracelet by tying sticky tape around her wrist then finding things in the garden or on a walk to stick on it, like petals, leaves etc.
From your list I would do a splashpad, zoo, couple of museums. If you do one outing a day then maybe a craft at home, that is plenty. Maybe go out for ice cream as a special treat or something? Bake something easy like chocolate crispy buns....

That is me this week and all of September until E starts her school nursery. First, I sulked a bit and begged DH to take some time off work..... :silly: I bought in loads of stickers - E loves stickers. She also loves painting so I have gotten the paints out a few times.. I bought some new jigsaws to do as well. We have made a cake, done some digging in the garden and watched a lot of TV. I'm palming the baby off on my inlaws for a couple of hours today so I can take E swimming. Our activities are limited when the baby is with us, but DH is taking a few days off in September and so we can E tobogganing at the indoor snowdome. She really wants to try ice skating too! Also on my list - the farm, soft play, McDonalds (she loves to go as a treat), out for ice cream, walk in the woods.

My 5 yo and 2 yo's daycare is closed all next week for summer vacation. My oldest starts elementary the following Monday and the younger one goes back to daycare.

What would you do at for a week at home (staycation) with your LOs? The weather is supposed to be nice and summery. Some activities in our city: zoo, children's museum, technical museum, a few splash pads and kiddie pools (but I don't think I'm brave enough to do kiddie pools alone with the two of them). Maybe some playdates.

What else would you do? Or what kind of at home activities can you suggest? I'm not super crafty, but I can make an effort.
