I live in San Diego and love all wine areas! Temecula is closest so I go there the most often. It's a little more compact than Santa Ynez (by Santa Barbara) which makes it easy. A 4.5 month old won't be able to enjoy all San Diego has to offer, but there is the San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park, and Sea World. If you would like any more specific recs, let me know!

Awesome, thanks so much for all the great tips. We will definitely look into all of these locations and activities. Looking at the pictures, it all seems so beautiful that I don't know how we will decide!

I will definitely call to check with the airline about the third ticket before I purchase them. That money could totally be put towards our fine dining fund!

I already chatted with DH over dinner about the condo vs. hotel tip as well as preparing ourselves to have a little more down time than on a baby-free trip. He thinks these are great ideas and sends his thanks as well. We never would have thought of these things...

You bees are the best! Cheers. :)

I definitely think its doable with a 4 month old. Like others said, you just wont be able to do as much in a day. Santa Barbara is really beautiful. If you're planning to head up the central coast also check out San Luis Obispo. It's a cute little town. I used to live there. Like @shopaholic: mentioned, there's Pismo Beach, but I prefer Avila beach which is really close to there. Right next to Avila Beach is Priates Cove (which is a nude beach), but there are some neat little trails to hike on around there. Oh and there is Paso Robles a little north of SLO that has great wine tasting. then there is hearst castle on the way to big sur.

Having traveled a bit with my LO, who is now 6 months, I would suggest trying to rent a condo or something similar to that. It's helpful to have somewhere to sit and relax between the time LO goes to bed and when you do. otherwise, you just sit in a dark hotel room!

And yes, you can just show up at the airport with an infant and only tickets for you and your DH! Some airlines will request that you add the infant's name to one of the parents' boarding passes, but some don't.

Well, I live in SoCal, so not sure if I can help from a "tourist" or a mom p.o.v. yet, but I also agree that Temecula is a really nice (and closer option) to go wine tasting. We stayed at a golf-course resort and at the casino resort before, both with wine tasting tour shuttle pick ups. San Diego is south and also pretty nice to walk around with baby in a stroller, sight-see, and get a little beach time. There's also Sea World, the Wild Animal Park, and the Zoo.

If you head up from L.A. in a North direction, Santa Barbara IS really nice! Pismo Beach, close to S.B. is a really nice and relaxing sleepy beach town. Carmel and Monterey are also really lovely, but getting closer to S.F., but I love both of those areas. And you could stop at Hearst Castle along the way.

You could do a day thing at The Getty Center (in L.A.) or The Getty Villa (Malibu).

The thing about this area is that you will need to drive to get everywhere! Even to get to restaurants from wherever you are staying. And finding parking in L.A. can be such a PITA. So be sure to have a GPS and car seat!

Hope this helps!

When you are in LA visiting family, would any of your family be willing/able to babysit so you and your husband could get out to a nice dinner? At 4.5 months, my LO just fell asleep in her car seat and slept through dinner so we could take her out to eat, but I wouldn’t have been comfortable counting on her to do that in a really “nice” place, and not all LO’s fall asleep at all when you’re out and about.

There’s lots of hiking near LA as well as other outdoor activities; maybe ditto on the babysitter situation, unless you are comfortable taking your LO hiking.

Thank you for the tips! I did a quick google search and Temecula and Solvang look so beautiful! Will definitely look more into them....

At first I assumed he would be a lap traveler and fly for free but every time I plug our travel dates and information into kayak.com or any airline website, it always charges me for three tickets. Can I really just show up at the airport with an infant and only two tickets/details for two passengers? I suppose I should call the airline directly to inquire but haven't gotten to that point yet.

And truthfully, the tickets are about $250 p/p round trip right now- I almost feel like it might be worth it to have the extra seat for baby gear and the infant car seat. But again, this is all new to me so I don't really know!

We didn't go to California, but we did a beach week vacation with our LO last summer when he was 2.5 months. I would just plan on only doing one thing each day. We were used to being out and about allll day and that just doesn't happen with a baby (or at least ours haha!) I would also recommend looking for a house/condo to rent instead of a hotel and finding a grocery store when you get there to pick up some things. It was really convenient knowing that we could cook dinner at home with a full kitchen.

@BrooklynBee41: I took my baby to London t 4.5 months as a lap infant and the flying was great. She slept a lot and hing out a lot mostly in my arms. Paying for an additional seat would have been a waste.

I haven't done it with a baby, either. But I love Santa Barbara and Solvang. It's touristy, but cute.

But I would say, with a baby, you probably just have to plan fewer things in a day and more "down time" at the hotels.

@BrooklynBee41: I have no suggestions for your itinerary, but why do you have to pay for 3 flights? The baby should travel for free as long as he's in a lap, right?

I did not do this with a baby, but we stayed in the Temecula wine region last year and LOVED it-- it was kind of off season (April) so it wasn't crowded, we got to do a bunch of wine tasting, there were beautiful mountains and parks nearby, and some decent restaurants. It's only 1-1.5 hours from LA, i think. It was just really nice and relaxing-- though probably would be different with a baby!

Hi everyone!

I am currently 33 weeks pregnant with my first child, a boy! We live in NYC but my cousin is getting married in Los Angeles this August. The baby will be approximately 4.5 months old at the time of the wedding.

Since we have to pay for three flights out there, I am thinking that I'd like to extend the trip to be ten whole days. About 4 of those days will be spent in LA with family, but the other 6 are available for exploration and leisure.

I am finding the 6 days of vacation quite hard to plan though, as I have no idea what life will be like with an infant! Will be want to stay in condos? Family hotels? Will we still be able to try out nice restaurants?

Ideally, my husband and I would love the 6 days to include a bit of pool/beach time, a small bit of wine tasting (nothing crazy, I promise! I just think the vineyards look so beautiful), and a bit of hiking. Being that we're from NYC, it's important that we're out among nature for a least part of the time. I will need some fresh air and starry skies! :)

I am looking into Santa Barbara and the Big Sur area, but there are so many cute towns and beautiful parks that I may be missing. I think we want our destination to be within a 5 hour drive, eliminating Lake Tahoe and San Fran.

If you have traveled through southern and central California with or without an infant, what would you suggest? Any baby travel considerations and tips would be greatly appreciated as well!

Thanks so much.
