@catomd00: I dont know that I agree that people that seek the information probably already knew this.

I think there is a lot of middle ground families, who hear "Oh AAP says no screen time, well thats impossible, so whatever". At least for some of them, they can now have some suggestions for how to do screen time wisely.

I don't want to say I don't really care what theAAP says, but I can't say I'm a blind supporter of the organization and knowing the political nature of these types of organizations and witnessing the discussions that take place first hand, I think critically about all their recommendations. Maybe I'm just being overly cynical since reading the recent article about how they've finally decided to cut ties with coca cola who has given them millions of dollars because it no longer aligns with their mission (duh?!) But, I can't help but think who is sponsoring them now that influenced this change? But yeah, I agree that quality screen time in moderation is just fine. I feel like the people who seek out this type of information would already know that though.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Basically. They don't made any direct mentions of the amount of time anymore, except to basically say that 30 minutes in front of a mindless show is not equal to, for example, 30 minutes FaceTiming with a loved one or playing something interactive and educational with a parent.

Maybe I missed something, but the guidelines have changed from quantity time (no more than 2 hrs) to quality time (make screen time, any amount, worth it!) ??

@808love: I had never heard of this site somehow so that was really helpful to me.

Because LO is not yet 2 (a couple weeks!) I honestly get a twinge of guilt every single time she has screen time. So, while this was probably not their intention, I feel better about it now. It was a good reminder to not just use media as a babysitter and to engage with her. We are really working on color identification right now, so I try to talk to her about the different colors every time she watches a show.

@T.H.O.U.: Yes, I liked that too. As an early childhood educator, in almost every class, workshop, training, etc. we were reminded how important it is to be engaged with young children and talk all the time. I'm convinced that my son was an early talker and has a huge vocabulary at 22 months because my mom (who was our primary childcare for a long time) talks nonstop. It drives me crazy sometimes, but apparently he was soaking it all up.

Also, we FaceTime DH's parents almost every night. The toddler and the grandparents look forward to it! It's just such a normal part of life these days.

And of course, sometimes we need a minute of peace and quiet, and a little tv is perfectly okay :silly:

I'm glad they recommended checking Common Sense Media site. It is a very trustworthy, reliable resource.

I liked this point under "Content Matters"

"Digital media that distract from social interactions (e.g., background TV, parents’ media over-use) clearly impair learning, while other media (e.g., Skype, Facetime) can promote social interactions and learning."
