Just an update that I met with the midwife today and she was not at all concerned with the NT results/risk. They will just watch for growth since low hormone (pap A?) sometimes leads to smaller babes. Which doesn’t seem like my case because I’m measuring a week ahead

I had something happen with DS. I did the NIPT first and it was totally fine. When they did the NT scan they said the measurement of the back of the neck was concerning but because the MaterniT21 was fine they were going to disregard it. He’s 5 now and perfect :  . If your MaterniT21 came back fine then that’s all you have to know. They’re 99% accurate. That’s far more accurate than the NT scan or the blood work that goes with it.

@nana87: thank you for the reassurance e.

I met the counselor and baby’s risk for downs is 1/162 due to my hormone levels. In conjunction with my NIPT she said 98% chance baby is genetically normal and 2% chance the NIPT didnt pick up on some other genetic problem (including downs and other issues). We actually had a really great conversation. I denied amino or karyotyping and we should have more definite reassurance at 20 week ultrasound. But I’m feeling positive

Thanks ladies for all your support ❤️

I don’t exactly remember but I think this exact same thing happened with lo2. My ob had me go talk to a genetic counselor who did a full family history but then told me that the materniti21 results were far more accurate and that She’d recommend leaving it at that though I think amnio was an option even though she advised against. Lo2 is now almost 2 and has been completely healthy

I would try not to worry! That sounds super stressful though. I think the NT bloodwork would put you in “high risk” because it’s just the ratio that there could be something wrong. I don’t know how old you are, but if you’re a bit older, that can make a huge difference too. If you’re above the cutoff you’ll be labelled as high risk, but it’s just a screening tool.

I believe the NIPT is >99% accurate, so if the NIPT is OK, I think everything will be OK!

If it was truly the NT bloodwork then the NIPT definitely trumps that. It seems a little strange they'd have you do both NIPT and NT though. There is another blood test around that time or a bit later that tests for spina bifida, though, so maybe that's the blood work they're referring to? That would be a separate result compared to NIPT/NT.

Either way, odds are in your favor that everything is actually fine!

@Kaohinani: thank you. It’s just strange because the ultrasound tech and doctor at the nt scan told me the measurements looked good. I’m trying to be calm until I make my appointment to see the counselor, hopefully ASAP. I don’t think they have actually seen my NIPT results since they are a separate provider from my midwife.

I'm sorry, don't freak out just yet!! Easier said than done I know. FWIW My practice wouldn't even let me do an NT bc the Panorama (same thing basically as materniti21) was more accurate and covered more things. Also my friend had materniti21 and her daughter came back perfectly healthy through that... But then some stupid scan found "soft markers" for Downs...AFTER the blood test came back fine. She freaked out!. So sometimes when you go digging you can find bad news even when that isn't the case (her daughter ended up - like the blood test said- perfectly fine).

That’s weird that they are going by what your NT said, mine also cane back abnormal but my counsyl test was low risk so they said it overrides the NT scan. My dr said the NT scan is just a relative risk factor and it doesn’t mean anything.

The NIPT is far more accurate. I would still attend the meeting with the GC to hear what he/she has to say about the NT scan and genetic counsel; however, I would mention your NIPT results and see what is said. Having worked for a university geneticist as a researcher, I'd always heard Amniocentesis and then NIPT (when it came out in 2011) are the most accurate for determining genetic abnormality. Blood scans vary. With that stated, visual scans (which follow up to blood scans) can capture facial, lumbar, and limb abnormalities which are not "specifically" genetically aligned. Many times, things are misconstrued and images are not clear during early scans and items of concern turn out to be nothing. In my heart, I believe there is very little for you to worry about since your NIPT ran little/no risk. Sendimg hugs to you and baby-bump Magnolia.

If your nipt came back clear I would just not worry. The nipt is more accurate and is often done if the nt blood work comes back high risk to verify if things are actually high risk or not.

My midwives prefer to just do the nipt because it is more accurate than the nt blood work
