Oh how I have missed Deli meat!! I know a lot of doctors aren't concerned about it but I have seen some very sick babies from listeria in my nicu so I have avoided it. But really, I am sure it is fine!

I just finished reading "panic free pregnancy" and there was a section about this. They said only 20 pregnant women in the entire country get listeria each year so the chances of it happening are extremely small. I just wouldn't touch the prepackaged stuff but I'd feel completely fine getting it freshly cut and then eating immediately.

It isn't just the slicer- anything sitting out has potential to be growing bacteria that your body could handle when not pregnant, but could be very dangerous when pregnant. For instance my OBs office tells everyone to avoid salads (like chicken salad from a deli) for this reason.

I ate deli meat almost every single day of my pregnancy. I've also never in my life heard of anyone getting sick from deli meat, so I figured it was fine.

I would not avoid it while pregnant. Just watch for listeria recalls, which are more likely to be on packaged greens than anything.

I'm 17wks and I eat way too much deli meat. Subway 1x a week and sometimes another serving during the week.

I figure if I think it's safe, it's probably ok... honestly I feel like I'm more likely to get Listeria from some contaminated cantaloupe or something! I personally think the deli meat thing is a little overblown as long as you don't eat nasty shady stuff.

I avoided it at first but def had deli meat a few times. Agree that as long as it's not from some shady deli it should be fine!

more an 'at your own risk' type of thing -- of course better safe than sorry, but if you feel confident about the source/are able to heat it up to hot, then you should be ok! (....said the pregnant lady who had sashimi yesterday for dinner.... mmm.....)

Thank you all for your comments. I just didnt know if there was a distinction if the meat was just shaved cause isnt that like eating, eg, sliced chicken (which is ok to my understanding)?
The funny thing is I have been vegetarian for 10+ years. I just am craving meat all of a sudden now and it sucks that I cant eat it! Haha!

My doctor told me not to avoid deli meat. I eat lots of deli meat--pre-packaged from Costco, from Subway, Jimmy Johns, the grocery store counter, etc.

If you're truly worried, avoid it, but I think it's pretty safe to say you'll be just fine eating deli meat.

The issue is the potential for Listeria on the slicer. If you're worried, avoid it.

I ate that when pregnant. I think the salt and other things that get added to deli meet are also a concern... I ate all kinds of things that are on the shouldn't list if I felt good about where or came from so many I am not the person to answer this question...

I may be totally wrong, but my understanding is that it's the slicer they're concerned about, not the meat. If the slicer isn't properly cleaned, it can harbor listeria.

That being said, my doctor wasn't concerned about deli meat at all. He said "I'm supposed to tell you to heat it up, but I don't personally think it's necessary."

I know you are supposed to avoid "deli meat" while pregnant for fear of contamination. I know this means all pre-packaged meats you would get at the grocery store to make a sandwich, and it includes, eg, Subway.

My question is this: What about the turkey they shave right off the turkey breast for you at the deli counter at Whole Foods? It literally was JUST on an entire smoked breast of meat one minute before they hand it to you. Does anyone know if this would be ok?

TIA!! :)
