@wrkbrk: birthday twinsie here has very few words too. she says daddy, and dee (for her big sister), mum-mum for food, nah-nah for milk and keeetaa (peekaboo). won't say mummy! she just spends the rest of the time pointing and saying daaaa at whatever she wants and babbling to herself.

@NurseDMB: welll, he says baba and sometimes mama. I know he understands some things, he does know what the word no means. It does bother me though that he does not respond to his name, only after the 5th time if at all. His 15month will be appt will be in two weeks, so we'll see. He just started pulling hisself up this week though 😊.

DD1 will be 2 in just over a week, and I've lost count. She talks in (mostly) full sentence, but omits a lot of the joining words like it/the/and, etc (for example, she will say "Where red truck be?" or "Mommy wash dishes sink") In her day to day, there isn't really something she encounters that she doesn't have a word for, and if she does, we only have to say it once or twice before it becomes a part of her vocabulary.

@wrkbrk: T didn't even have those words at 15 months. He had about 5 signs that he used occasionally and he would only babble occasionally. He's almost 19 months now and has at least 25, maybe more, spoken words.

DD is interesting. She had 10+ by 12 months then lost almost all of them. We questioned whether she may be on the spectrum (her cousins are) and took her to the doctor who found she had such bad fluid in her ears that she could her very little and hadn't heard clearly in months. At 18 months we had surgery and it picked up from there. At 2 she had around 300 (because of her background I kept counting). She now has maybe 1000 at 2.5 and typically speaks in 4-5 word sentences (with typical grammar issues)

@Jackiedavis87: My youngest son is 16 months and only said mama & dada, and his older brother's name at his 15 month checkup. Now he has close to 20-25 words and it all happened quickly!

14 months is still super young. There is a huge range of normal with this stuff. My oldest only said mama and dada at that point, too, but had a huge word explosion around 18-19 months and by age 2 he was ahead in speech. The most important thing to look for at this point is receptive speech (understanding what you say, responding to their name, etc)

Mama brag alert: DS was a very early talker - first words at 8 months, first sentence just before a year. He is 2 years and 9 months today he now uses 10+ word sentences and tells stories, it still amazes me.

Wow! This is freaking me out lol. DS is 14 months and only says mama and baba. Honestly he's still into making noises. With that being said he's at the far end of everything so far. Didn't start crawling till 2 days before he turned 1 and still not pulling himself up. His ped didn't seem concerned at his 12 month but we'll see at his 15 month

I wouldn't even know where to start counting. She's always been very verbal and a little sponge so she is quite the talker and putting really good sentences together at 20 months. It is so fun watching them learn new words!

So interesting how variable the development can be! Our LO is 21 mos & has more words than we can count. We did make a list after her first big language explosion around 18 mos & back then she easily had 200 words. She will attempt any word we give her, uses 2-3 word sentences, & she picks up new words every day. It's so much fun & also has been really helpful to start getting more communicative. Just today she told me "tummy ouch" which may explain why she has been so cranky today.
Our nephew is 3, and he didn't really start talking until 2, but advanced quickly.

DS1 had over 200 words by 18 months, I think, and was speaking in sentences at 22 months. He's almost 3.5 now. DS2 is almost 19 months, and he has probably close to 100 words? He's starting to put together two and three word phrases at times.

SO many! At almost two, he has hundreds...all his colors, can count to around 14 and is starting to speak in 3-4 word sentences (He fell down or Time to take a bath? are favorite ones). He can also sing at least a dozen songs fairly well. Happy Birthday is his newest favorite, but he does pretty good with 3 Blind Mice, Bah Bah Black Sheep and gets about halfway through the ABC's. I'm loving getting to see how his little mind works now that he can communicate more. Such a fun age!

DS had around 30-50 words before his language explosion at 20 months. Then it was like overnight he was full on talking sentences and using all sorts of words. Whereas before he would say just a word at a time, and usually the same words.

Our 2 are total opposites.

DS1 was talking in 2-3 word sentences by 18 months. We couldn't count how many words. He was a super early talker, and behind in his motor skills.

DS2 was always ahead on his motor skills, and at 18m had barely 10-15 words. He's since had an explosion, and at 19m, has probably closer to 30 words. He will at least repeat a lot now. We're getting there!

Our two are so different. O is almost 16 months and we've done a pretty lazy job of keeping track, but she has at least 50, probably closer to 70 considering the ones I'm forgetting. She never stops talking. She says a few two word phrases, "hi baby" "hi mommy" "hi (t's real name)."

T is 18 months and has about 10 words and 6 signs. He didn't have any spoken words until about a month ago, but he's gaining new words daily now. My impression with him is that he's not confident in his voice. He seems to know the words and we've even heard him say some more words once, but then doesn't say them again for months. He's so much happier now even with only 10 words.

Almost 2 and several hundred. No way I could count them all. Knows her colors, different types of vehicles, so many animals, I think DH counted that she knows 10+ different types of birds alone. It's crazy how fast it happens. She only said Daddy and kitty when she turned 1. She mostly speaks in 4-5 word sentences. "I need to go potty", "daddy's taking a shower", etc.

A was talking in full sentences by 2, but she was a VERY early talker - she's always done cognitive leaps a bit early, and gross motor (like walking) a bit late. First Hawaii trip was at 22 months, and I remember her being able to communicate pretty effectively at that point. She hasn't stopped talking since ... ever. ;)
