Yay! Glad to hear it went that well! We're doing a 7 hour drive, then 4 hour drive, then 2 hours, then 2 hours, then 9 hours over a week (for great grandparents' 50th anniversary, too! and our first anniversary). BUT he'll be 6 weeks. We'll see how ours goes--hopefully as well as yours.

So the drive didn't go too badly! I sat in back with the baby, but he slept pretty much the whole way. The usually 7 hour drive took about 9 hours because we had to stop a few times to feed DS. Nursing in the car at rest stops was pretty uncomfortable, so during the last half of the drive I pumped while DH drove then gave DS a bottle when we stopped. The drive was tiring but not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Our family and friends were all shocked we took such a long trip with such a little baby.

Our longest trip was 4 hours when she was a newborn. I spent most of the time playing music on her little sax rattle and she was pretty good. Hope you have good distractions too!

Good luck!

We've made the 16 hour trip between Georgia and Kansas with LO. We've done it 4 times now. It took an hour every time we had to stop. I'm exhausted just thinking about it! With the extra/longer stops, it ended up taking closer to 18 hours.

Good luck!
We'll be driving 6hrs in a few weeks when baby is about 2months old to visit family as well.
She seems to like car rides -when we're moving!- so hopefully it goes well. I'm thinking 2 stops, one every 2 hrs. Hopefully she won't freak out as we're close because there really isn't somewhere to stop close to my brother's house!

I agree with boogs, it is easier when they are really little since they sleep so much. We drove from Northern Idaho to Central California in one day (800+ miles) when lo was a month old and she really slept the majority of the time! Good luck :)

We did 16 hours with Lala as an infant. We broke it into 2 8 hour chunks. The first day was fine, but the second day was awful. We had to stop for like an hour just a half hour away from our destination.

You can do it and you are already being realistic knowing that it will take you longer than usual. We took LO on a 3hr trip at 2 weeks the trip took about 1hr longer because we stopped to eat and so I could nurse her; typically we would have just gone through a drive-thru and eaten in the car. I strongly encourage that you sit in back with LO (if you aren't already) so that you can better handle soothing if needed).

Good luck!! I've never driven 7 hours, but my parents live about 7 hours away and we broke up the trip into two parts. We stopped in NY first and stayed one night there, then continued on down to PA. The trip from MA to NY was about 5 hours and we broke it up by stopping at 2 malls on the way, where we nursed and walked around and we ate. If you break up the trip into 2 or 3 hour increments it's really not that bad.. .you just have to plan to travel for an entire day. We even had our dogs with us and it was fine! A little stressful, but a fun family adventure :)

DH and I are taking our 3 week old on a trip to meet my family and go to my grandparents' 50th anniversary party. It's usually a 7 hour drive, but we'll see how long it takes with a newborn. I'm hoping he sleeps the whole way. Wish us luck! I'm pretty sure we are crazy for doing this.
