I dont think a kid can tell the difference between a diaper and a pullup once they are wearing them. It's pretty silly to think that just because you "pull" them on like undies they will "know" they are different.

We had to do the no underwear thing for a while before underwear didn't feel like a diaper. But DS could wear pants no problem.

@skipra Yes to the cloth—I’ll try that at school Friday.

Both my girls have been sick so we were home today and DD2 went commando under pants and told me she had to go! Don’t know why I didn’t think of that (especially since I’ve done this before—I must be rusty).

Could you try a cloth pull up? I think they can feel it more than with a regular pull up and it doesn't leak like underwear.

I work in the 1-2 year old room at our school and it is hard for the teacher to bring the kids to the potty in that group but I wonder if you could ask the teacher for the older class to grab your LO for trips to the bathroom?

@Becky: Especially when "training pants" means pull ups rather than undies with a few extra terry layers or a PUL backing, it is REALLY hard because it feels just like (and is) a diaper. My kid who has been potty trained for over 6 months will still just go in a pull up.

I wish my daycare would let her go commando, but unfortunately it sounds like she has to wear pull ups. She’s also in the 1-2 year old room, and they don’t do much potty training in there so it’s sort of unfamiliar to them. In the next room up they do. My mom also won’t let her go commando the once per week she has her at her house because of the furniture and rugs (our carpets need to be replaced so we don’t really care, and we cleaned pee out of our couch with DD1 a few times and had it professionally cleaned).

The head teacher wasn’t actually in today when I dropped her off, so I’ll run these ideas past her. The one I talked to is a bit more old school. Thanks for all the feedback—I feel like wearing pants at home without training pants would help her make that transition.

@Becky: Our daycare was very helpful and on board with her going commando. They've actually suggested it to other parents since then. The suggestion is to go commando for a month and then move onto to undergarments which is our plan. We are currently mid month.

I have a friend who had to abide by a two layer rule at daycare so they did commando at home for an extended weekend and then did under garments after that. It worked well for them.

My son was good with pants and no underwear... preschool allowed that and helped with the transition and he never had an accident there.

@Becky: When we were potty training, we did naked bottoms for about a day (only half a day for my oldest). If you get the sense they are getting it, it's time to move on. So day 2 of potty training was wearing regular pants with no undies. We did that on day 3 too, and then at daycare sent them in undies (or commando if you're my youngest, who hates underwear apparently).

I wish I could do that but at school and my mom’s she has to be in training pants ☹️Or are you saying going commando at home so she gets the experience of having wet pants and then learns to let me know she has to go? I can try that.

We are doing a month with only pants or leggings mostly (commando). So no training pants, panties, etc. When they wear snug undergarments their muscle memory kicks in and they will automatically allow it to flow.

Have you tried pants with no undies? Or real underwear that are as dissimilar as possible from a diaper?

Over the holidays I decided to take a half hearted stab at introducing the pottyto DD2, age 20 months. I know that’s young but DD1 was almost 2 when she was trained and DD2 goes on the potty sometimes anyway.
It went great—I never had to do the put her on the potty every 20 minutes thing—she just went in her own every time. Couldn’t have been easier. I’d be out of the room and she’d go and then bring it in the bathroom and dump it. We had maybe 2 accidents over 3 pantsless days? She even went at Target. We ended up having to put her in diapers because she went on Augmentin and you know what that does to poop, and our old furnace couldn’t keep up with the negative temps so it was 63 degrees in the house.

The problem is if she is wearing training pants or a diaper she will go in them. So zero accidents when she’s naked from the waist down, but she will always go if she has something on. This makes daycare and being at anyone else’s house a huge problem. We keep her half naked when we are at home and she’s still doing well. I’m taking a long weekend in February which seems so far away! We have the 3 day weekend coming up too so I’m going to keep trying then.

Any tips for getting them to not go in their training pants?
