Zantac didn't work for us so we switched to Prilosec maybe at 4 months? It worked really well.

@Mrs. Blue: thanks for all the helpful information! I had actually already made the crib nest thanks to your helpful post! And I actually meant to type Prevacid, not Prilosec! We discussed both, but the Dr. thought Prevacid would work better for her. SO! I am hoping that it works as well as it did for your boys.
@NavyRN2012: I am glad your LO had such awesome results. Hope I see the same for my baby!
@MrsF: Thanks for the advice. I hope she feels better soon too!
@Mrs Green Grass: Yeah, I meant to type Prevacid, so we will start it tomorrow morning. I am glad it worked so well for you. I hope it helps my daughter!
@LuLu Mom: Yeah, the Zantac didn't do anything at all for us. In fact, I think it made it worse! So, heres hoping that the Prevacid works.

Zantac did nothing for us, we did Prilosec and it did nothing, so we were switched to Prevacid and that helped (we are actually abck on it again at 21 months.)

they do it because it's a different formula and works differently than zantac. Higher dose doesn't mean it will be more affective for such a small child.

We started on Prilosec and it didn't do the job, so we switched the Prevacid and it worked really well. My LO also had severe silent reflux. We were on Prevacid for over a year and are finally pretty much reflux free!

I think Prilosec is worth a shot because each one works a little differently. If it doesn't work, ask to try Prevacid.

Like, @MrsF: & @NavyRN2012: said, we were able to take them off the meds later without any problems at all. I think it was around 7 months that they stopped taking the Prevacid and they had no problems at all at that point.

In that situation, a dose increase wouldn't be a good thing since it's the recommended dose for your baby's weight. Generally, switching the medication can bring about improvement. Some babies do really well on one type and others need a different type. We started out on Pepcid and switched to Axid. Axid did the trick and LO is so much better.

And here is the one that actually describes our experience and talks about what I had generally learned about the different meds and how PPIs (proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Prevacid) work.

My daughter had no luck with Zantac, but great improvement with Prilosec. She hasn't been on anything for over a year, so I don't remember the dosage. Our pedi basically said that Zantac doesn't work for a lot of babies but she wasn't comfortable using Prilosec without us seeing a pediatric GI. The GI doc prescribed Prilosec, which was very helpful, and her reflux pretty much cleared up. I hope you can get some relief for your LO soon!

We had the same results with the Zantac, and the pedi switched her to Prevacid like @Mrs. Blue. Prevacid is in the same drug class as Prilosec. We saw results in about 2 weeks and it was a LIFESAVER! She was a whole new baby. We were also able to take her off of the meds completely by around 8 months and have had no issues since (she's 16 months).

We weren't on Prilosec, but they did both take Prevacid, which I think works in a similar way, as opposed to Zantac. I can't remember the dose of the Prevacid (and I think it might be based on weight or age anyway), but it was a God send!

We started both boys on Zantac around 5 or 6 weeks. They slowly increased the dose because he didn't want to give them anything else until they were a little bit older. The Zantac may have helped a little bit, but we never saw any major improvement. I think they were around 3 months when he switched them to Prevacid. I will just say as a cautionary tale that the first 7 or 8 days were pretty awful in the transition from Zantac to Prevacid for one of my guys, but he also had pretty raging acid reflux. I read a few things on a BabyCenter group about reflux that switching to a PPI can sometimes cause an "acid battle"--i.e., the stomach works fights the meds and produces more acid, until finally the meds win. I'm sure this doesn't happen all the time, but I just wanted to mention it because I was not expecting it and if I hadn't been warned that it can take up to two weeks to be fully effective, I probably would have insisted that he be taken off that med. Around day 7, it clicked and it was like I had a whole new baby! I am sooooo thankful we got on something stronger than Zantac! I wrote a post about our acid reflux issue for the blog, and I discussed the switch from Zantac to Prevacid. I'll go find the link.

Your pedi may already have LO on the highest dose of Zantac that can be given for that weight, so that may be why they want to switch to Prilosec instead of increasing a dose of Zantac.

So...my daughter was diagnosed with silent reflux last Monday (she is almost 11 weeks old). They started her on a low dose of Zantac (0.6 mL 2 times a day). They told us if we didn't see an improvement within 1 week to call because many people see improvement within 3-4 days. Well, we didn't really see any improvement. So! I called today and they recommended switching to Prilosec. Did anyone here see an improvement with Prilosec? I am wondering why they didn't try to increase her Zantac dosage too. How much Prilosec was your LO on? Would love some info about it!

*I am editing this post because I meant to type Prevacid! When I was reading the responses, I realized my goofy, lack of sleep induced error.
