I get cystic acne too. I started cutting out certain foods to see if they were causing it and landed on seeds. It turned out sesame seeds and flax seeds in particular make mine much worse. Now I avoid all seeds and read all labels on grocery store food. I've had to cut out hummus (tahini is sesame seeds) and multi grain breads, crackers and granola bars...but the acne is quite a bit better (although I still have mild breakouts).

I have had to use prescription acne meds my entire adult life, so I feel your pain! Not being able to use them and having horrible skin is one of my big pregnancy fears, but 6 weeks in my face is pretty decent so far. One thing that helps my skin normally is drinking green tea daily--you can get it without caffeine if that's a concern. I've heard that tea tree oil is helpful for acne but haven't tried it myself. Anyway, the thought of green tea makes me want to throw up right now, but if it didn't I would be all over it! If you can stand the thought, it might be something good to try.

I have always had good skin, even as a teenager, so all this new pregnancy acne is totally weird for me. I've been using Yes to Carrots but it's not really doing anything for the acne, but I haven't been motivated enough to bother trying to find anything else. I'll give the witch hazel stuff a shot, though.

@LadyFingers - right now I have 3 cycstic bumps on my chin (I'm a lucky gal) and 2 in my ears. I've used Finacea for 5 days and two have come to a head and are healing and the one is just going away. I love it!

Thank you for all your suggestions! I know I should probably try cutting out dairy, but ugh. I've also been craving it like nothing else. Maybe I'll have to give Finacea a try... I hated my last dematologist I went to, all she did was try to sell me Arbonne products. So now I'll have to try to find somebody else good :)

Not a product, but I found that eliminating dairy from my diet made a huge difference in my acne, and pretty much completely eliminated the painful cystic acne I would get around my jaw and neck. Not the most fun thing, but it really worked for me pre-pregnancy. Good luck!

i had a lot of acne growing up--it's one of the reasons i started taking BCP. now that i'm off, i have broken out. i read somewhere random that yogurt masks each day could help because yogurt has antibacterial properties--i use 2% plain greek yogurt and leave it on for 20 minutes. my skin hasn't cleared up completely (wouldn't that be a miracle), but i do feel like my skin is more calm after the mask. i've also added another face wash to my day--usually i'm a twice a day gal, but now when i get home from work i wash the makeup/grime from my face with a gentle cleanser (cetaphil). these aren't 100% fixes, but i think they help for me. hope you find something that works!

My skin looked terrible until about week 14-15. I used cerevie face wash which didn't really help, but it seemed like it was the only thing that didn't make it worse. Using the clarasonic actually made it worse because my skin is so, so sensitive.

I'm 20 weeks now and my skin looks much better but I still have a breakout every so often (I think I've had 2 since week 14).

Cystic Acne has always been my worse enemy since the age of 21. When we were pregnant before our MC my skin was HORRIBLE. It was all over my chin, my scalp and in my ears. No joke! My derm told me to use Finacea at night (LOVE) and said it is safe during pregnancy. I doubled checked with the pharmacy.
I use this face wash:http://www.devitaskincare.com/store/aloe-vera-moisture-cleanser-p-17524.html
Lotion: http://www.devitaskincare.com/store/perfecting-time-25-oz-p-17527.html
Clarasonic Mia
and this mask I adore: http://www.amazon.com/Shea-Terra-Organics-Facial-Cleanser/dp/B003QTSI7O
however, my skin care girl just got a new brand I think Im going to try.

My skin care routine worked beautifuly before getting pregnant. So I added Finacea and am happy with it so far.

My skin's always been pretty good but since getting pregnant I've been having breakouts. Dickenson's witch hazel has a new line of face soaps. I got the plain old cleanser and it's been working pretty well for me. I also use the witch hazel toner. It's nice and not drying.

@MsLipGloss: Yes, because it has salicylic acid in it. I'm not sure it will work (I just randomly chose it) so I'd rather not risk it. But I'll double check with my OB.

@Ladyfingers: Are you not using the Aveeno product because it contains salicylic acid? My OB told me that the over-the-counter topical products I apply to my face were fine during pregnancy, and that it is products like prescription-strength retinoids that were supposed to be avoided. His response was "are you going to ingest it? If not, it's fine in moderation/light daily use."

Of course, as with everything else, check with your OB too, just to make sure.

@hellobeeboston: Thanks! It's so discouraging, because I tried so many OTC things in the past and nothing ever worked except the stuff that I'm not allowed to use. I'll have to check out REN and Belli. I do have a mask at home that I might try, it's an Origins charcoal mask that I stopped using a while back just because I got lazy.

i had some "adult acne" (as I like to call it) pre-pregnancy - but I feel like ever since I got preggo it's been much worse - it's getting slightly better now at 25 weeks - but it still acts up...

anyway - i've had pretty good luck with the REN products from Sephora - it's an all natural acne face wash & night serum, maybe you can get samples from somewhere first?! I've also been using bumble & bumble makeup removing cloths at night which are good.

But I have to say - i'm still getting some lovely zits, so I'm not sure... I tried the Neutrogena Naturals face wash & lotion and 1, i hated the smell, and 2, it didn't do anything.

i think Belli has an acne product that I read was good....

So, this isn't just "pregnancy acne," though I'm sure the hormones aren't helping. I've had chronic, mostly cystic acne, since I was 13. I was previously using topical Differin and Clindamycin with great results, but can no longer use the Differin and stopped using the Clindamycin when I ran out because on its own, it was doing nothing.

Does anybody else have similar issues, and did you find something safe that worked? Benzoyl peroxide has, in the past, done absolutely nothing for me other than drying everything out so badly that I can't use coverup. But I'm willing to try it again. Ideally I'm looking for a face wash, scrub, or mask that works well. I bought an Aveeno acne scrub yesterday and apparently missed the fact that it says "SALICYLIC ACID SCRUB" right on the front. Good thing I looked again before using it.

Anyway, help, because my face is a greasy bumpy red mess :(
