A friend lost a baby to SIDS. It is terrifying I can't bring myself to think about it. Happening at daycare makes it even worse in my mind. I agree though that worrying about kids never gets better, it just changes over time

How awful :crying:

Since SIDS is a residual category of deaths - by definition those we can't explain - there's really nothing you can do to prevent it. LO always sleeps on his back, but I'm sure that many babies who died of SIDS did as well. Since I can't stop it if it is going to happen, I try to just accept the possibility, enjoy the present moment with him, and focus on things that can be prevented. My main worry is that LO will be injured or worse because of something stupid I did, i.e. not noticing that something that was a choking hazard fell on the floor, etc, etc... That's enough worry to keep my mind full without having to get into things I can't prevent...

My father’s older brother died of SIDS, I think. My Dad won’t talk about him. But it makes me pretty paranoid.

My DH had a close college friend lose his 3mo old to SIDS. I will always worry about the safety of my kids- driving, eating, sleeping, whatever. I really try hard to not let it dictate or overwhelm me but I don't think worrying about kids safety will ever go away- even when they are teenagers, in college, etc

Anxiety about SIDS was the primary way my PPA manifested. I basically didn't sleep for the first 6 weeks of her life because I was constantly checking on her (once I got medicine, I still checked on her but much less frequently). She's 3 now and I still check on her sometimes at night!

@CatchAFallingStar: Yes. My assistant’s 3 month old granddaughter passed from sids. Unbelievable. I was a complete freak about it - kept DS in our room for over a year, fan, paci, everything they say anecdotally might help.

I know people who have lost babies to SIDS (and toddlers to “unknown causes”) as well as had losses in pregnancy / still births. Honestly, I don’t really worry about it on a daily basis. I don’t co-sleep and we follow the safe sleep rules. You do what you can to be smart and protect your child. Worry does very little if anything to help.

I know people that have lost babies to SIDS, but only from my child loss support groups. It’s definitely scary, nothing you can do except provide the safest sleep environment you can. I actually know someone who lost their 14 month old to it. It’s actually called something else after 12 months, but it’s the same thing. That’s why I’m still paranoid even though my kids are a little older.

I often chat with the owner of a local kids resale shop as I browse the store. This time, she has just had a new baby girl so we were talking all things baby. I knew she also had a young son, so I asked how he was doing. To my horror, she told me he had passed away at daycare in March at 11 months old. The cause was SIDS. I was so horrified that I didn’t say anything besides how very sorry I was. So, I don’t know exactly what happened. But, it just reminds me that I have to be so careful with my baby’s sleep even though she’s 6 months and can roll over and sit up. There’s still a risk. It’s so scary.

How much do you worry about SIDS? Has anyone in your life lost a baby to it?
