Sometimes the best memories are born out of routine. I like the idea of a puzzle and I REALLY like the idea that @looch: suggested.

Maybe it would be more meaningful to do half an hour or an hour every week - wear the matching shirts, and take video to make a time-lapse video when the puzzle is finished. This would accommodate his napping, they would have time to chat, or just focus on the puzzle, they could listen to music and share what each other is listening to at the time.

I would fear that so much pressure would be put on making one event or outing special, that if it doesn't go as planned, they might have more feelings of regret than anything else.

I would think fishing would be a great activity. Even just to a local pond. You can stand and move around or sit down. You can usually park pretty close to where you need to go. They could even spend a day or two together before hand rigging up the poles and stuff.

How about fishing near a lake? I know it's not exactly the interests of both of them, but it's something your husband can help with, they can sit and relax for a bit and when he needs to stand up, DH can help.

Are there any outdoor concert venues near you? Maybe your husband could get handicap accessible seats for them?

@MrsSRS: I really like the idea of a 3D puzzle. And I'd video tape the event itself.

Thanks so much for those ideas.

@MrsSRS: Kites would be fun, but I worry that it wouldn't be a 'together' activity enough. My MIL was suggesting things like taking the train to Toronto to see a baseball game and staying in a hotel. This is for a guy who cannot make it up the stairs in their house anymore. :(

@Mamaof2: Oh how I WISH this could happen. I might research possibilities in the city they live in. Unfortunately he can't even get into their boat right now.

I feel like such a Debbie Downer, but I can't think of anything that they could do that would give them the father/son sort of memories they are hoping for.

I actually think a sailing trip would be awesome! Assuming he is able to physically get on the boat.

He can just sit and relax all day out in the ocean getting some fresh air

Kites? Once they're up you can sit or stand or hand it off to someone else for a break. Sudoku or board games or 3D puzzles?

So long story short...for father's day my husband gave his father matching shirts suggesting that they wear them while they do something together. My FIL is very ill and unlikely to be at all mobile for much longer (he is barely mobile now though), and we are worried about how much time he has left. Because his health deteriorated so much so quickly, the activity plan was pushed and pushed, and not yet happened. Now that his dad is so sick, he can't think of what to do. So I am wondering if you guys have any ideas.

In terms of interests:
-they are both computer/electrical engineer types
-they both love things like sailing, windsurfing, skiing
-they both love difficult problem solving
-they love music, though different types
-they love being outdoors

But:
-my FIL can't really walk, or sit in a single spot for too long without needing to stand up/shift
-my FIL needs naps pretty frequently

Oh man. As I write this I think that I realize there is no perfect activity for them to do together. When my husband was younger, he and his dad did rockets together, and I suggested going to visit with a kit they could build and launch, but he wasn't so keen on it.

Anyhow, if you have any great ideas, we would be so appreciative!
