@Mrs. Cowgirl: We actually did BN story time a couple of days ago. It was cute, though only good for about 20 minutes! And he kept trying to eat the train cars ...

@looch: We do, though it's not particularly big. I'll check it out, though!

Do you live near an airport? A lot of them have viewing platforms that are pretty nicely done. Our local airport even has a plan themed play area.

@Mrs. Yoyo: bookstores with good children's sections are also fun! the train table at barnes and noble is always a hit :) and the b&n near us also has storytime every week.

also....this is totally lame, but one of CB's favorite places to visit is costco during lunch or dinner time because of all the samples! i'm not kidding...and if baby yo-yo loves to eat as much as you say, perhaps he'll like it, too? ;) plus, when CB was younger, he was fascinated by all the stuff and the very high warehouse ceilings, too!

@NYCaliMama: We tried one of those, but it's only 45 minutes a week and like over $200 for a couple of months, which I thought was a pretty poor value (also no open gym, otherwise I would have gone for it). There's another place that DOES do open gym, but he's almost always napping when they do that.

@Cole: Pet store is a good idea! And yes, the only bounce house I would take him to at this point does have a toddler area ... he's fairly big for his age, but I guess he'll probably still be run over until he walks.

@Mrs. Bee: There are a couple of smallish children's museums/discovery centers ... I will investigate them further.

how about a Gymboree or MyGym class? Those often come with "open play times" too.

@ mrs. Bee I loved that museum as a kid (many, many years ago). The twins will be here any day now and I can't wail till they are old enough to take them there.

@artbee: it's the brooklyn children's museum. charlie still loves it there! a quick subway ride (or cab ride) away. we usually take a cab and it's $8. they will bring a car seat if you ask.

When are going stir crazy we hit the pet store, toddlers seem to like it more than the zoo since they can get closer to the (smaller) animals. We have places nearby that are coffee shops with large kids play areas, often with dedicated space for the littlest visitors.

I agree that the bounce house will be rough for awhile still. Many even have a dedicated toddler area but there is inevitably a bruiser of a 3 year old in it who winds up smothering the babies.

Sponges and a container of water works for a solid 30 minutes with the 13 month old I take care of, water and a paint brush on the driveway too but be careful that the pavement isn't too hot.

@Mrs. Bee: What museum? We'll be up there in a week, maybe we'll check it out!

I'm going to keep an eye out for this thread, I agree that it's hard to find things to do. We go to Itty Bitty Splash time, they have water that is shallow enough for her to crawl around in.

bounce house is way too much at that age. charlie was almost trampled last summer and he was 1 1/2.

we actually started taking charlie to the children's museum at that age. our local museum has a great area for crawlers, but he was able to stand at a lot of the regular exhibits. he loved the water features and aquariums.

annual memberships are usually pretty inexpensive. hopefully there is one in your area?

Just wondering if anyone has any good ideas for 1) fun activities and/or 2) outings for a 12-month-old who is not quite walking yet. Playgrounds aren't terribly fun for a crawler (and it's going to be 100 degrees this week, so there's that, too)! There's always the pool ... but even that is somewhat dicey in this heat. And he really needs to walk for the splash pads.

At home, we're either reading books or just playing on the floor in the living room. To get out, we go to the mall a lot (nice play area) and sometimes the downtown library where there's also room to play. I'm wondering if he would be OK at one of the local bounce houses or if he would be trampled by other kids all the time. We did discover the zoo has a great indoor play area, so we just bought a membership.

Any other ideas?
