I say just let him/her loose in a field or park or backyard with balls, bubbles, plastic bowling pins. As long as you are involved they'll be delighted!

Have you looked into swim lessons? Also, try looking into a Gymboree or My Gym.

@anbanan15: my DH teaches ice skating to tots! :) we're hoping to get skates on DS (16 months) soon.

Right now he loves gymnastics (Tumble Tots) and soccer.

@anbanan15: Just wanted to chime in that I just found swim lessons that start at 6 months (with a parent) and a gymnastics class that starts at age 2.

Hmm Thanks for the ideas! I've tried some of those and they still don't seem to be enough to curve his energy lol. I'll just have to keep at it until we find something :). I did see our area has an indoor bounce center, but I'm not sure what the age is on that.

I rotate through the children's museum, the science museum, and the zoo - I'm lucky to live in a big city. All of those have big fun spaces for children to run around in. I've also found a lot of local churches and community centers that have open gyms for toddlers and preschoolers. I have a parent's group from meetup.com that does things together, as well.

I also just have a big open space arranged in my house for my toddler to go nuts in. When she's really running, it won't seem as big, but for now it works well.

Have you checked out dance/movement lessons or classes at your local baby gym? Unfortunately, I haven't found a ton of structured stuff for the 3 and under crowd, so I just make sure DD gets a lot of time to run around feely every day (in the backyard, at the park, or at our local baby gym).

If you want to do more activity stuff, you could look at library storytimes, music classes, or art classes in your area.

It's been awhile since I've posted here, but I was wondering if you could help me trouble shoot for some activities for a very energetic 17 month old? I want to get him involved in a sport or activity, but all the ones I am interested in do not start until closer to the 3-5 age range. What activities do you do with your young toddlers that really help expel that extra energy?! :)

Some ideas we had were gymnastic classes (some of these do start at 18-24 months in my area), martial arts, and ice skating lessons. We have done swim classes in the past. Thanks!
