@Mrs.Bird - I can't remember but at the beginning I went more often, I'm pretty sure it was every 2 weeks, once my cycle got better, it was based on my cycle (going before ovulation to stimulate then after 2ww going to help w/ implantation, etc).
My place was about $90. It is reimbursable through an FSA or HSA.
We don't have a community option here, but that sounds like a great way to go! Just make sure that you are getting the personalized treatment to help you - not just generic treatment.
As for falling asleep - I'm always on my back and I just pass out, never move :o) It's almost like a hypnosis state, you're aware but so relaxed you're asleep. It's very nice!

@CarrieLouWho: wow! your cycles dropped down that quickly?? that's amazing! i'm on day 56 right now =/ is every 2-4 weeks how often treatment was suggested to you? i was thinking it would be a weekly thing, guess not. i think i might be afraid to fall asleep with the needles in! if i moved i could roll and push on in and puncture an organ or something! HAHA!

I did acupuncture once and I LOVED it. It was very relaxing. The needles didn’t really hurt, there was an uncomfortable feeling a few times but it was more just weird than painful. Once the needles were in it was fabulous. I was going to try it out before I got PG because I had heard that using acupuncture through the first tri helps with your chances of not miscarrying. Unfortunately the only place that we have in town is REALLY expensive and not covered by insurance.

@mrs. bird: The community kind is definitely the way to go! I have a friend who went that route and really loved it. If we had a facility that offered that here I definitely would've done it.

sounds like more people have positive experiences than negative ones! yay!

the place i'm looking at is based on a community treatment style, where many people are treated at the same time in the same space and there is a sliding 'pay what you can' fee. i figure it would probably be more beneficial for me to go more frequently to a place that i pay less than to a place where i pay more but can't afford to go as often.

I started going for overall well being and I was pregnant within two weeks! I love it. I would say about 10% of the needles hurt a little, but most are painless. I personally get my back done, then turn around and she does points on my legs and arms. If you don't want your face done, I'm sure they wouldn't do it. The only downside to me is the cost, if it wasn't for that I would get it done every week!

I didn't have a great experience with acupuncture - it was definitely relaxing, but for me, the needles sometimes hurt quite a bit, and I didn't see any fertility benefits - it didn't help me get/stay pregnant, nor did my bloodwork results change at all in the year (ish) that I was getting treated. I'd heard a lot of good things (and of course the SATC episode where Charlotte gets acupuncture! :) so I was hopeful, but it just didn't work for me.

My cycles were super off (60-70 days long). I started acupuncture in September and my cycles immediately dropped to 35 days. I went regularly (every 2-4 weeks depending on where I was in my cycle) from September - December. We had been trying for over a year at that point, I took one round of clomid and got pregnant! I've continued to go while pregnant.
Needles don't bother me that much, but honestly, they are so tiny I don't feel them. They are like hairs, not like the needles you use at home to sew. My entry points have always been feet, legs, hands, and one right above the nose b/w the eyes. I pass out every time I go, it's one of the most relaxing things I've ever done.
I say give it a try, what do you have to lose?

Acupuncture is awesome and it doesn't hurt! (that much).
My mom's an acupuncturist and so is my uncle.
Uncle treated my sprained ankle using needles.
Mom used acupuncture to help me go into labor! I was 2 days late and wanted my baby out! 4 hours after I got poked I went into labor.

I tried acupuncture for migraines. It didn't work for me, but I loved it! It's so relaxing. You really don't feel the needles. I had to stop because I couldn't afford to do it if it wasn't helping my migraines, but I miss it so much.

I know two people who did it while doing IVF, and they both got pregnant.

I did acupuncture for 5 months. I was a little nervous too, but it wasn't bad at all. The needles are tiny. Most you don't feel at all. Every once in a while the needle will hit a capillary and will sting a bit. But the acupuncturist will ask if any are uncomfortable and take them out. So basically you shouldn't feel anything at all.

I've only had them in my face once, when I had a head cold.

Normally it was legs, feet, abdomen, hand, wrist, ear and top of head.

i'm thinking of trying acupuncture, to help with my cycles/TTC, but i'm a little nervous about it. i'm not a fan of needles (i say that, but then people remind me that i've had my nose pierced, my ears done twice, a tattoo, and i have my mother give injections every month for a health issue, so i guess i'm not a fan of them- but i deal with them when i need to). i was all set to just deal with the needles, but then i read mrs. tricycle's entry about it & saw the last picture with the needle running under her skin across the length of her forehead & WHOOOAA!! now i'm freaked out!

have you used acupuncture before? what was your goal (TTC/treating a health problem/overall health)? do you think it helped you with your goal? where were the needles placed on your body? did any of them hurt? how long did you have them in? do you think it's totally out of line for me to ask them to skip that scary forehead one, at least at first, i don't want to tell them how to do their job, but i also know that freaking out won't be helpful =D
