I am addicted to blistex. I have tried to quit for years, but to no avail.

I am also "addicted" to picking at my nails. It's more of a nervous habit. I was able to curb it for a year or so (had pretty nails for the wedding), but unless my nails are professionally done, I will start picking and eventually rip them off and get an infection. As I type this I am ashamed, but still can't stop.

@Boogs: I smoked for 10 years and quit cold turkey because I wanted to be healthy when TTC. It's been two years since I had my last cigarette and I still crave it. For me, smoking was a stress-reliever - I would smoke on my way to work and on my way back to work and it would calm me down. Now that LO is here and I'm stressed all the time, I feel the desire to smoke all the time. I know that I won't go back to smoking but still...I sometimes wonder, "Just one puff...That's all I want."

My father smoked for quite a few years. He scared me off it completely when he told me a few years ago that every single day he craves them and every day it's a struggle to say no.

My SO is totally addicted to gaming but I think it's cute. I'm probably addicted to craft things. Stickers, paper, glue, scrapbooking things, jewellery peices... I want it all. =P

I just quit smoking a few months ago and it's the best decision I ever made. Honestly, it's the first time I decided to quit on my own, for myself, for my health, and for our ttc journey. There's no other motivating factor than that... my dad is in the process of quitting soon as well.

Moreso than the nicotine addiction, my addiction was to the habits: after eating, while drinking, and as a mental break from work stress.

I've surived all three scenarios for over 2 months now and now it's just a numbers game. I won't call myself a nonsmoker until I'm smoke free for at least 6 months.

@chopsuey119: it's really hard and yes, it's something only a smoker or someone else with an addiction can really understand. I guess an example is - do you like to drink? Or are there some things that if you smell them, you just want to eat them right now? Like a glass of wine smells amazing to me and I want it if I smell it. Or, you smell your favorite meal but you're not allowed to have it even if it's right there in front of you.

I was a smoker when I met my husband. I quit because he hated it. I stopped drinking for 6 months because I couldn't be near alcohol or that would trigger a smoke craving. If I drank, it was with my husband and we would always eat so that gave my hands something else to do. I'm 8 years off of them now and every once in a while will crave it (like if I drank too much) but other than that, I can't stand the smell anymore.

@chopsuey119:
I am an ex-smoker. I smoked for 4 years and quit about 3 years ago. It was really easy for me because I made the decision for myself. I didn't feel like anyone or anything was making me do it, I just decided that I wanted to stop smoking before I turned 30. I read Alan Carr's 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking' and it worked like a charm, I haven't had a cigarette since. I think the thing with quitting smoking is that you have to accept that you will never have a puff of a cigarette ever again. And you have to be okay with that. You have to break through all of the pschychological wiring that tells you that smoking is enjoyable. Once you realise that the act of smoking is not actually enjoyable, you are home free. It isn't physical at all, it is entirely in one's head.

I'm addicted to yarn. My husband's addicted to computer games. Not as bad as when we first started dating, but it's his relaxation tool after a tough day.

Knitting and yarn saved our relationship. When we first got together, I was finishing graduate school. I had no time for hobbies before that. I didn't know what to do with myself. I put way too much energy into time with him. So, I was implored to find a hobby. He also was gone with consulting during the week, so I was alone alot. I went to my first knitting class 5 years ago and never looked back. I've been at the same store since. I've seen friends get engaged, get married, and have kids. I laugh with wonderful people on Wednesday nights. Best addiction ever.

My SO is a gaming addict, but he turns it off if I need him for anything.

My dad was a druggie and an alcoholic when he met my mom. He turned himself in to drug rehab, and decided to marry my mom while he was there. The alcoholism stopped after he threw up in the back of the brand new car. He's a t-totaler now, because he doesn't trust himself to stop at one (after 23 years sober.) He and my mom both smoked. They "stopped" when I was 4, but my mom smoked in secret for another five years, and my dad THOUGHT he chewed tobacco in private for 12 more years (he kept his chew in the same drawer as the nail clippers, and he SMELLED like it - it was a poor secret.)

@chopsuey119: Has he been smoking a long time? I hear the longer you smoke the harder it is to quit. I have a cousin who has probably been smoking for a good 25 years. She was able to quit while being pregnant, but picked it up again after giving birth. I always wondered why she went back after she was able to go without smoking for so long, but like you said it's probably only something a smoker could understand.

My dad struggled with smoking for most of my childhood . He used to smoke in the basement, out the bulkhead, so that we weren't exposed to the smoke. I remember it making me so angry, and I used to go downstairs and hide his cigarettes or put pictures of me and my brother inside the plastic sleeve (I heard that trick from the Smoke Free program in middle school I think), He used to get so mad at me for harping on him, and I didn't understand why he wouldn't just stop.

He eventually did, and now that I'm an adult we can talk about how hard it was for him to stop, and how my little pictures broke his heart.
