My daughter had her adenoids out when she was 3, after a year of recurring ear infections and sinus issues, and it was definitely a huge positive difference for her. The surgery was super fast and simple, and other than some raspiness she was fine a few hours after we got home. I can't speak to the tonsil surgery, but a friend had her daughter's out earlier this year, and they had a bit more downtime with it, a little more recovery, but she was good after about a week as well. Good luck!

I had adenoids out as a child. It helped with the respiratory infections. A couple small complications, but I suppose they're worth not breathing with my mouth open. The possibility of tonsil removal also came up at one point, but the problem cleared up by itself with a lot of time outside in the sun.

DH had his tonsils removed. I'm not sure it was a good idea - he gets sick much more often than I do, and the colds will often get right past his throat and turn into something else - sinus issues, weeks of coughing, even a few ear infections. I wonder if he'd be better off if he still had his tonsils.

DS had adenoid problems since starting day care. It took almost a year to figure out that's why he got ear infections regularly. The ENT said his adenoids were on the borderline between when he recommends surgery or not, and said we can try a longer course of antibiotics (20 days) and see if there is improvement. There was, so no surgery was needed. I am starting to notice a little mouth breathing just now, but DS is almost six and we were told kids often outgrow adenoid problems around this age - going to wait and see if it clears up by itself.

Lo had tubes at 13 months. They were dislodged within 18 months. But then we started with recurrent strep. She had tonsils and adenoids removed this summer at 3.5. I believe under 3 they stay in the hospital. We did not. Recovery was text book. Day 3-5 were challenging. She stayed home a full week. 3.5 months later no sickness that requires meds. She still suffers colds and nasal issues but nothing that isn’t normal.

no time to read PP, but I think there is a time and place for the surgery, but I was really surprised to find out it is linked to a lot of negative long-term outcomes (who knows causative or correlated)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: they told us to plan on being out of daycare for a week at least! He had surgery Friday morning of a long weekend and DW was on Mat leave. I believe we sent him the Tuesday because he seemed totally normal. We went to a museum the day after so he did super well.

@amandaleaou: oh wow! LO’s surgery this time will be at the hospital and he has to stay overnight for observation.

Glad recovery seems to be a breeze @muffinsmuffins: I was thinking we would have to cancel Thanksgiving travel plans.

My 2 year old daughter had her adenoids out and tubes put in this morning. Surgery was at 7:45 and we were out the door by 9:30. The actual surgery took less than 30 minutes. She was very irritable coming off anesthesia, but since she calmed down, got home to eat and take a nap she’s been completely fine. Her throat sounds raspy and she has some bloody ear discharge, but both are normal and don’t seem to bother her. We’ll see how she’s doing in a few days, but I’m glad it’s over with and hope she starts getting less severely sick going forward!

We did tubes and adenoids for DS in August and I’m very happy we did though we had to push for 2 years with his ENT to do it. His was due originally to snoring, mouth breathing and congestion issues but also he failed 4 (!) hearing tests. Within 2 weeks his speech drastically improved and he’s had one cold which was a lot less severe. Recovery was just a few hours but him coming out of anesthesia was rough. No regrets.

I should say his snoring and mouth breathing improved as he got older and wasn’t an issue at time of surgery, and he never had it severe enough for a sleep study.

I had chronic ear infections as a child and was dealing with a significant hearing loss in one ear because of them. They had tried tubes first which helped somewhat but not completely. I had my adenoids and tonsils out at 4 or 4.5 and never had another ear infection after. My hearing improved almost completely within six months.

My parents have said the recovery was easy and they wish they had done it sooner.

Both my kids 2 and 4 have tubes. 4yo also had androids removed which made a HUGE difference. I cannot undertstate this. It was blocking 70% of her airway. Recovering was no big deal (she did not have tonsils removed). My 2yo only had tubes done and his ped says if we need to have them replaced we would remove adenoid at that time. I would go for it

Hi, I’m sorry you are going through this. We just got ear tubes placed and adenoids removed for my 3 yo. It was done in the same surgery. The ENT said they will wait to see if the tonsils also have to come out. Since then he has already been sick once (he has croup this week) but no infections and he is much less congested. He seems to be hearing better and sleeps better through the night (I’m assuming because he can breathe easier)

Best of luck in whatever you decide

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Ours was just one night test. She wore a monitor on her finger which recorded her oxygen level. The doctor also wanted us to sit in her room for about 10 minutes and just see if she stops breathing. It was pretty easy. She was also a very loud snorer and now is quiet as a mouse.

@Lindsay05: that’s great to hear he results were immediate! the ENT told me to observe his sleep for a few days to see if he has sleep apnea. Right now I could confirm snoring. Can you tell me about the 3 day sleep test your daughter had?

My dd1 has her tonsils and adenoids removed on her 5th birthday. She had bad sleep apnea and it affected her breathing during activities as well. She was on puffers due to always coughing, especially at night. When the specialist saw her sleeping results from her sleep test he had her in for surgery in 3 days. The results were instant. No more puffers, her energy level increased and was even able to eat better. We felt so bad we didn’t do it sooner. I can’t comment on ear infections but she does seem to be sick less frequently.

The saga continues with LO’s recurrent ear infections. One of his tubes fell out and he will undergo surgery to replace that one and at the same time get a fresh tube for the other one. His ENT also diagnosed him with enlarged adenoids and says his tonsils look enlarged too and we might as well get both removed. DH is not convinced the tonsils’ removal is a must. Removing the adenoids and tonsils are supposed to reduce the number of ear infections, which is great because LO detests ear drops. Since he’s had one tube in and one tube out he has to get oral antibiotics and ear drops. I’m having to bribe him with mini Chips Ahoy cookies to get the ear drops in.

Anyone else’s child get their adenoids and tonsils removed? Did it help with the symptoms? Did it help with the ear infections?

LO’s pediatrician appointment is next week and I’ll ask her what she thinks especially about the tonsils aspect.
