@Kemma: @ValentineMommy: thanks for the responses, ladies. When they shared for a week at my inlaws over Christmas, they were fine after a couple of days. Now we're on 5 days of <8 hours sleep total a day, and I'm looking reassurance that it won't last forever!

For us it took about a week.

The first night, DS2 (who was only 18m at the time) was REALLY mad his brother was in there and he cried most of the night. The second night, he thought it was hysterical and laughed all night. The third night he began to settle down and get used to it. After a week the novelty had completely worn off and he was used to it.

DS1 (who was turning 4 at the time) had no problem with the transition, other than getting mad when his brother was crying that first night.

My kids (2 and 4) shared a room for a week while my parents were staying and although it took a while for them to go to sleep each night they did get faster as the week went on and the novelty wore off!

My two girls (4 and 2) have been asking to share a room for months. We are expecting LO3 in a few months, so we thought we'd give it a try while there was still time to adjust. (We have four bedrooms, but if this worked out we'd keep the guest room as is for now and update/reuse the nursery.) We moved them in together this weekend, and it has been a total sleep disaster since. They're bouncing around and playing in the dark until 10:30pm (bed time is 8) and nap/quiet times are definitely not that. I'm thinking we'll give them two weeks and then reassess, but I wondered what others' experience had been. When your kids began to share a room, how long did it take for the novelty to wear off and for them to settle into a new routine?
