DH has 3 adopted siblings, and three biological ones. I won't go into details here because it isn't my story to tell, but I will say that it was very difficult/complicated for all 7 kids. Ultimately, 6 of the 7 are now pretty close, but it has definitely impacted DH and how he sees the world.

The only person I know who was adopted has a horrible relationship with his family. But they had fertility issues, gave up and adopted him, then went on to have two bio kids later. I don't know how much is on the parents and how much is just that his personality doesn't mesh with the family. I know his brothers are gorgeous and have been since birth (I grew up around this family), and unfortunately he's not very attractive, so I've always wondered if that was a factor. Ultimately he's been basically disowned for being an atheist, which is really sad. Though last time I talked to him (it's been a while) he had gotten in touch with his birth mother and he fit in with that family amazingly. So I really hope he's been able to get to know them better and find the connection he's missing with his adopted family. But it's a really sad situation. :(

I don't have adopted siblings but I have always wanted to adopt. I just thought there were a lot of kids out there that need love but I have come to realize it's more complex than that.

I just saw this a few nights ago "Approved for adoption", it's free right now with amazon prime to watch. It's about a guy that got adopted in Europe (the film is in french) from Korea after the war. It's really opened my eyes up on how it feels to be adopted.

His main issue was that he never felt apart of his family (he was one of two adopted kids from Korea in his family he was first and his adopted sister came later, and they came into a family that already had 4 bio kids).

He took every little bad thing his adopted mother said to him to heart. His mom called him a bad apple one time and that message kept coming up through the film. He was always trying to look for love in her, the fact was his adopted mother loved him so much and he just couldn't see it or accept it since he was not kept by his bio mom ... is what I got from the film.

One of the last things he talks about in the film was how him and his other adopted sister would write love letters to their mom and put under her pillow hoping that it would make her love them more... she never talked about them or wrote them back... but he found out that she kept every single one of those letters.

I was surprised in an earlier thread to see how many of us have adopted siblings!

My younger sister is adopted (she's 3 years younger than me). It was never a big deal to me that she was adopted, but it was a lot harder for her to process (understandably). It took time but eventually she came to terms with everything, and our relationship has been better since then.

If you have adopted siblings, let us know how your relationship is going these days!
