I quit before our baby was with us. I wouldn't recommend it. We had a failed placement so I ended up being at home for 3 months not caring for a baby and just waiting for the next call. I don't regret doing it. I was a teacher and taught AP students. I didn't want to start with those kids and leave unexpectedly so I just didn't return to my teaching job after summer. My son was born in November. So it all worked out but there was some time after the failed match that I was just sitting at home.

I think assuming there is no issue with giving notice while on leave then I would wait until you have a baby and are on leave to tell them.

I agree with the folks above. At my job I just met with our HR person and reviewed the policies. I asked the hypothetical question "what if I am on maternity leave and something changes, and I can't return to work." At our agency, I'm not obligated to pay back anything for benefits- they view my maternity leave as continued time as an employee, and as an employee I'm entitled to my standard benefits until the time that I no longer work there. She was good about saying, "I will keep it private that you are doing research about your options."

The paid portion of my maternity leave is through short term disability, and that is an earned insurance that I have paid in to.

You'll just want to go over your company policies (about maternity leave, terminating, etc...) before making a decision. Although it's really common to give oficial notice while on maternity leave, some companies penalize employees who do not return to work after leave. For example, some companies may require you to pay back insurance premiums and other pay if you turn in your resignation while on leave or within a certain timeframe after returning from leave.

I agree - I think it's fairly common to go on maternity leave and THEN decide you won't be coming back. You need to look out for yourself over your employer, and going on maternity with no set plans in place gives you options. What if while you're on leave, you realize that you really miss working or something? Or your husband gets laid off and you HAVE to work? You want that option to be there for you even if you don't plan to use it.

I think most people go on maternity leave, then decide if they will be a SAHM and inform their employer after their benefits run out (at least in the US). That's pretty much my plan, though my schedule will be more predictable. I think you can wait until you are on maternity leave.
I know other people disagree with this, but if you are entitled to payment for your leave, seems like you should take it.

My boss knows that we are going to be adopting, but doesn't know that I am not planning on coming back to work. I know it is really tricky to decide when to tell your employer you are going to be a SAHM, but it seems like especially so with the uncertainty of adoption!

We are in the early stages of the process, and are anticipating completing our homestudy and entering the “waiting” phase of the adoption process in late winter/early spring – at that time, we could be placed at any time. Our agency has made it sound like we will be placed quickly because we are not specifying a particular race. It’s tricky because it’s such a case-by-case basis. In one situation we may be matched with someone who is 6 months pregnant and have some notice. In another situation we may get a call from the agency and the next day be picking up our baby from the hospital! (how crazy would that be?!?!?)

I don’t want to screw my employer over, but at the same time, I am fearful of telling them my plans of being a SAHM and then being let go. But what if we have one of those situations where we only have a day or two notice that we have been matched? Is it generally frowned upon to go on maternity leave, and during leave to tell them I won’t be coming back?

I know I have a few months to think about this, but it's already stressing me out. I would love any advice on this topic!
