@hellobeeanon: I came across a support group forum chat that will be happening for women with diagnosed or suspected ASD. I only looked quickly, but it doesn't seem like it is limited to women specific to the county in which this is being held. Maybe you can check it out and I hope it can be of some resource to you.

I just wanted to throw out there that there's a huge community of autistic people, especially on Twitter, who have connected around getting diagnosed as adults and feeling like their life makes sense with the perspective of having autism. Some hashtags to look for are #actuallyautistic. #autisticjoy. #AskingAutistics

I work in the field, and if you have health insurance I agree with starting with a psychiatrist, or even a therapist who specializes in autism spectrum disorder and start there (try your health insurance or the Psychology Today therapist finder to find someone with that specialty). Either one can review your concerns and make a treatment plan based on that, a licensed practitioner in either field is qualified to make an Autism Spectrum diagnosis. Psychological/Neuropsychological testing can potentially help with diagnostic clarity, and if the request is made by a psychiatrist/therapist it may be covered by your insurance.

Good luck!

Could you get your insurance to cover a psychiatric visit to help you cope with the issues you are having? I think a psychiatrist would be able to diagnose you. I know someone who recently received an autism diagnosis that way. Good luck and I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

Posting anonymously.

I have struggled with various things in my life that make me think I may have autism. I would be interested in getting formally diagnosed, but it is cost prohibitive right now ($1200 for the place I contacted).

Has anyone pursued an adult diagnosis of autism or had a spouse or close family member who did? Has anyone had luck getting the test covered by health insurance?
