For $300 you could hire three babysitters to watch your kids at your house for $25/hour for four hours (you may want to spend the extra $100 for a fourth sitter to have the sitter to kid ratio down to 1:6). It depends on what the rates are like in your area.

Then you and the other adults could go somewhere else--like out to a favorite restaurant and then drinks, or whatever. In exchange for free babysitting, it's reasonable to expect guests to buy their own food and drinks. I think the parents would really appreciate not having to wrangle their kids at the same time as they socialized.

@Mrsbells: ohhh bowling interesting! I'll have to think about it.

I counted and there are only 8 kids of the 24 that don't know how to swim.

One thing is I have an incredibly childproof sliding back door leading to the pool. NO kid is getting out there without the help of an adult. You need to be at least 5 ft tall and strong enough to pull 2 handles with both hands.

After witnessing a few incidents and near drownings at pool parties, I am very apprehensive with the swim at your own risk approach. I think you need a dedicated life guard person who watches the pool, stays sober and is dressed ready to jump in.

Personally having to clean up is a big downer for me so I would choose somthing out of the house. The bounce house feels more like its a kids event though. Can you do something different thats also kid friendly like skating or bowling
.

I would absolutely go to a jump place to celebrate my own birthday...when my son goes to trampoline parks I always get up there and jump around, it's actually really fun, but I know a lot of people don't share my enthusiasm!

Hosting at your house sounds like fun! I bet once everyone arrives no one will notice if the house is not sparkling clean after your teacher bash. I always stress about should I make the house sparkle before guests arrive ( and dazzle them) or have my cleaners come after ( and help me out!).

@DesertDreams88: We hosted a similarly sized party in our 1500sf condo, with no outdoor space, for our son's first birthday. It worked out great. The kids were mostly 5 and under. I hired a music guy to entertain the kids. Then we did cake.

The invitation specified that schedule and suggested that our childfree friends might want to come in time for cake (and skip the kids entertainment). For the most part that is what happened.

The party started at 2, entertainment was at 2:30, and cake was at 3:30. By 5pm we still had a lot of people so we ordered pizza. The party finally ended around 7pm. There weren't too many kids left by the time we ordered the pizza. So the party sort of had two shifts.

@Mrs. Pajamas: oops, I meant to write 40 oz per person, haha. And yeah, I totally get that it's not a great place/time for an "adult" party, but when I think of it as more a family party, then it seems less weird.

@DesertDreams88: I agree with others that it's a personal choice and you seem fine with having people at your house. The bounce place is a pretty cool deal but the timing kind of stinks for an adult party. If it was a kids party I would lean bounce house but since it's your bday I would go the more adult route and host. Plus only 40 oz of booze total??? That would not fly in my circle of friends for 20 adults ha!

Have you been to the bounce place before? I only ask because we recently went to a 4 yr olds bday party at a similar location and while the kids loved it, it was exhausting for the grownups because some of the structures are so big, they were difficult for the kids to navigate on their own. There were a lot of sweaty Dads that day

@DesertDreams88: Basically I feel like if you're not a stickler for cleaning up (you'd only have that night/morning to really clean up from the previous party and set up for next day), I think it's doable... Maybe a tiny bit chaotic but if the weather is nice and everyone knows the pool is open for use, I'm sure it people will be divided between in/outside or at least be moving between the two places.

I voted bounce house because parties + kids + pool stress me out. I feel like I always have to watch the pool.

Can you drink at the jumpy place? If not, that might tip the scales back to your place and just swap off with DH and friends for pool watch duty.

That sounds like a lot of people for the square footage of your house - unless you think a lot of people will stay outside for the majority of the party. The bounce house place seems easier even if slightly more expensive! Plus if you are hosting a similar party in pretty close time frame, I'd rather change it up and do two different things.

I think it comes down to who you are. As you said you're chill with lots of kids/guests over and don't seem to mind the prep/mess so I feel like option A is more for you, plus you save $.

For me personally, I either would have limited the guest list and have a smaller party at home, or suck it up and pay the extra money so I don't have to clean up. I am very hospitable but every time after we have company I am up all night doing mass cleaning and that's just what comes with the territory to me if we host.

I am having a 30th bday party in August. 30 adults, 24 kids, total of 54 people. All kids 10 or under. Very kid-friendly / family friendly crowd obvi. I am debating between:

[A] Our house, open the playroom and my son's room, with activities set up. Those rooms are small, standard kid size. Adults will socialize "down the hall" in the "great" room (living room, kitchen, dining area combo) and outside. Yard is xeriscaped so not very welcoming, but the patio (with misters or fan) and the pool will be open to kids and adults. Swim at your own risk thing - most of my guests have pools so kids are very accustomed to that. Party could be 10-1 or 4-7, so 3 hours. House is 1300 sq ft, with half of that being open. My home is very kid friendly, I'm chill about that, and we regularly have 7-9 kids here weekly, and parties with 15-20 people here every couple of months. I can attach pics in a subsequent post.

[B] Untraditional idea: Rent a local bounce-house place called Jumper's Jungle. All kids can jump and play. Adults can mingle downstairs but mainly upstairs- there is a lounge where you can watch the jumping area but sit on couches & chairs, watch TV, play darts, pool, or cornhole. Party could only be 10am-noon. Fee is $350. Food has to be bought, not homemade.

Option A Pros: More time, possibly save $$ because some homemade items, definitely save money bc no fee, more "personal"
Option A Cons: 40-50 people in our house 20 of whom are kids (so probably cramped), cleaning/prepping the space before and after

Option B pros: Lots of space, very kid-friendly, don't need to clean up or set up significantly (place has pre-made standard decor, I could bring additional)
Option B cons: About $400 more (almost a week's take-home pay for me), less personal / not a "fancy" or cool venue, less time

Food would be about $200-$300, I estimate $200 for my house bc friends will bring drinks and desserts in lieu of gifts (standard protocol among my friends), Food would be about $300 if I do the bounce house place. We priced it out using the grocery store's ordering service.

Where would you have it and why?

Another side factor, not sure if this influences things: I'm also hosting a end-of-summer / bday bash with my teacher friends the night before at my house, and the food will overlap. That party list is 25 guests.
