I second what @matador84: suggested. Contact local places and see if they need anyone to teach pre-law classes if you think that's something you would like to do. I would hesitate to pay money to take courses to prepare for a potential position that doesn't pay well!

@MaryM: Thank you for your insight. It does sound like most of the jobs were obtained via networking - and it sounds really hard to find one :( Which is so odd, since adjuncts are paid so poorly! At least pay your instructors well!

@matador84: no, not discouraging at all! These are the real, straightforward answers I need to hear. As you can probably tell from my posts, I'm really looking to do a 180 career change (hated law). Education appeals to me so on many levels, but the legal industry sucks when it comes to job prospects so I do NOT want to go down another difficult career path. Thank you for your honesty - it really helps.

I chimed in on your other post so I hope I'm not sounding discouraging! My masters isn't in adult ed, but I did have a part-time teaching job at a community college before I had kids. It was SO hard to get the job and I basically only got it because I knew someone who knew someone. I was looking previously all over the state because I was sure teaching college was what I wanted to do...and the jobs were just very hard to come by and mostly hires were ABD's or adjunct/emeritus Ph.D.'s...so I don't even think having a master in adult ed really would help. Even at the local community college here to qualify to teach classes you have to have at least 18 hours of graduate work in the discipline you want to teach or a Ph.D. in the field.

HOWEVER, since you previously were an attorney, are there any pre-law classes at a local community college? I know ours has some and also does a 4 year university nearby. Having your J.D. would more than qualify you to teach those classes if that is what your interest and experience is!

At the university I work at, I'm not sure that any of our adjuncts have a MA in education (unless there's adjuncts in the education department). Mostly, they're in related careers and were able to network their way into teaching here by knowing a dean or full time professor.

And having gone through a master's program that was aimed at adult learners, I'm pretty sure none of those adjuncts had any sort of training in education whatsoever.

(The quality of teaching was really hit and miss. The best teachers were those that worked as trainers or communicators)

(First of all - ty to everyone in this community fielding my million and one career questions!)

Any community college/ other adult level instructors here who can weigh in on whether a certificate on adult education would be helpful for a lawyer-turned-SAHM contemplating a career change? I know adjunct positions are really tough to get! I'm having a hard time breaking into the field without any formal experience or background in teaching (although I've tutored and been a TA).

Do you think a course in adult ed would be helpful or would they not consider anything below a MA in adult ed? And if so, is a MA in adult ed worth going for, or are job prospects pretty slim?
