@Happygal: right, I've had it most of my life, but the fertility meds really made it awful. Stress too. :/

@Mrs. Polish: yes. I had to go back in my records to find out when I started to get eczema, and it was before treatments. Maybe the drugs have made things worse?

Thanks to everyone for sharing! I really thought I wouldn't get any replies. Based on what I've read online, adult onset eczema isn't very common.

Mine came on at about 22. At the time my whole body was basically in revolt as I tried to get my food allergies sorted out. I ended up being allergic to gluten and most of my other symptoms have been under control since going gluten free, but the eczema hasn't improved at all. I manage it with Eucerin calming body wash (the kind that is oily), lots of lotion, and steroid cream when necessary.

@Happygal: I have adult onset eczema too. I can't use my steroid creams while pregnant or choose not to...the only one that I can use is really mild but it does help. It's called desonide and it's the mildest of ointments that you can use for eczema. Maybe ask your doc or OB about it of you need something for outbreaks. I've been lucky that I seem to not have as many eczema outbreaks while pregnant. I avoid harsh cleansers...basically I stick to cetaphil cleanser and cetaphil cream for my moisturizer. Also it helps to avoid super hot showers.

I had it in elementary school and then nothing until college. It came back in college and law school but in different areas (face instead of body). I don't know the trigger, just try to manage, if you will? Cetaphil face wash does wonders for me.

@Happygal: i can't recall without looking, but have you used fertility drugs? I have eczema and Clomid and femara both caused me to have extreme full body breakouts.

@happygal, mine was because I had my fingers in nitrile gloves a lot for a chemistry lab I was taking. It was the combo of chemicals, super dry/irritated skin, excessive hand washing, trapped in gloves, everything. It just pissed my fingers off and i had weird eczema patches under my fingernails and on the tips of my fingers that wouldn't go away.

@creativemomma15: no apologies, please! This is very helpful information. I'm using unscented/dye free everything right now, and know I should give up my hot showers, but I love them so much. I'll let you know what they find with me, and thank you for these suggestions!

@Happygal: Okay, Sorry if this gets long… My eczema showed up a few years ago and I never had any problems before. It was year round… I went to a dermatologist who basically treated the symptoms with steroid creams and what not. I took a few rounds of steroid pills to clear it up when it was extremely bad and even had a shot once or twice. It would always clear up afterwards but then creep back. I ended up getting referred to an allergist and that was the best thing I could have done. She was much more helpful with it and I rarely have problems with it anymore. I had allergy testing done and was shown to be allergic to pretty much everything but mold, so from March until the first frost, I am the worst. I have a strong reaction to dust mites so what I ended up doing was buying allergy covers for our mattress, box spring and pillows. This was AMAZING!!! I started washing our sheets weekly in hot water and drying on high to kill the dust mites and added the covers. Now, I don't need to wash out sheets as often, but basically I was sleeping all night on what was causing my reaction. Adding the mattress covers made the biggest difference. Also, we have all hardwood which takes away the dust mites in carpet. We also cannot really enjoy the windows open in our house or else I break out from it after a while. My allergist also suggested stopping taking hot showers and making sure I get an unscented lotion on my skin within 3 minutes of the water being off. I also switched to unscented everything. Sorry for the novel but I remember being in so much pain and discomfort at the worst of it and was amazed at how a few simple changes made the difference for me.

I hope you get some answers and relief soon!

I'm not alone!

@blackbird: @babycanuck: did either of your doctor's mention the possible cause?

I have a steroid cream that does work well, but it's not recommended if you're pregnant. Since we're TTC, I try to use it sparingly.

Yep - mine came out about 2 years ago. I'm on a liquid for the patches I get on my face, and a cream around my hairline. Luckily it's not nearly as bad as my mother. I find it comes out more in winter and when I'm stressed.

i have eczema that popped up in college; I'd never had it before. A steroid cream cleared it up. I get outbreaks once in awhile but the tube i got was huge, so I just re-apply.

I'm prepared to get no bites on this one, but has anyone experienced adult onset eczema?

I got it about a year ago--I've never had it before. The dermatologist thought I must have had a reaction to something, but it's still here. I'm trying to figure out the best route to go to figure out why I've developed this. I have a follow up appointment with the same dermatologist, but the nurse said I may need to go to an allergist.
